  • I'd love some tabs for this, if not I guess I'll just copy from the video...

  • i don't know how to send tabs, Fredrik, so her's some info on playing it - it's in D with the 6th string tuned down to low D, the only other chords are G and A - notice that the G chord needs 5th fret on string 6 to allow for the re-tuned string.. in the first part the thumb plays 'clawhammer' - that means it alternates between bass strings, and in the second part the tune is played on the bass strings and the fingers add 'little' chords where possible on the high strings. let me know - cont'd

  • Fredrik - continuing - let me know if you need any more info - and good luck with it - cheers from the uk - martin.

  • @andypandywright This will definitely help! Thanks alot!

  • There is just something about this song. And the way you ply it. Simon Jeffes would have loved your rendition, I think. Still gives me goosebumps. Just love it.

  • i know what you mean and i agree - i played it on tape going down south with a great model to draw by the sea, and this adds to the music's effect even more - cheers from the uk - martin.

  • Well done, and a thoughtful, competent interpretation. I like your style of playing and your version of the PCO classic gives is a little ease, a casualness, yet is faithful to the song. Nice. Cheers!

  • Martin...

PCO have been musical heros to me since I was 16 in '82

that's an A+ rendition, I must say. Simon Jeffes would give it the thumbs up, I'm sure of it.

Thanks for the technical explanation behind the playing too :-) and thanks for taking the time to post this up.

    Chris in London

    :-)

  • chris - thanks for your very positive comments and i'd like to think that simon would have appreciated it - his music always had a wide area of acceptance - cheers, martin

  • Excellent, I listen every day at work.

    Greetings from Madrid

  • allariz 1234 - i'm really glad you like my version of the penguin cafe solo. Also let me say how sympathetic i am over the air crash at your airport - people in england are upset and supportive. - martin.

  • Thanks

  • Great rendition!!!

One of my favourits of PCO.

    5*****

  • martin's away right now but he'll be glad you liked his solo - and gave him 5 stars!

  • yes that was very nicely done i would love to play that around the camp fire it would immpress all well done that man

  • really glad you like my arrangement of the penguin cafe solo. If you look below our comments i've put a reply to hanklovesnumbers which gives the details of how to play it. here's wishing you many impressive hours with the campers! cheers - martin

  • Nice one.

  • thanks clive - and greetings from the uk - martin.

  • theres somehting about beautiful music played simply, can you tell me how you learnt this please? i have an identical hat if it will help me.

    just awesome! thanks

  • hanklovesnumbers - i knew the tune from a tape and worked out the melody on strings 1 2 and 3, then got that rhythmic bass by dropping string 6 to D and playing strings 6 and 4 with my thumb, adding more string 4s with index finger, - then put the melody an octave lower and shifted the rhythm onto small chords on strings 1 2 and 3. but, of course, you must wear your hat whilst doing it! - martin.

  • Fantastic! Very very well done =D

  • Great arrangement! And a nice hat too!

  • einstraus - thanks for your nice comment about my solo- personally i'm not too sure about the hat! - martin

  • You are right. I guess it is more of a Touque!

  • i admit, i had to look up 'touque' in wikipedia, and happily it doesn't sound too bad and not at all derogatory - have a happy christmas, einstraus - martin

  • This is a beautiful melody played well. The more I listen to Simon Jeffes music and peoples' interpretations of his work the more I think he was a rare and brilliant composer. At any rate, I love this video. It's a work of art.

  • jburke55 - thanks very much for your positive comment and i agree, simon had a unique compositional genius which, happily, so many people recognised - martin

  • this is such a beautiful rendition of that song andypandywright! 10x kudos. i would've given so much to go to london to see them perform on the 11th and 12th. i can only hope they will consider a tour. 5 stars definitely for this..

  • bendingsyllables - thanks very much for your comment - it's much appreciated. also thanks for posting all the great penguin cafe music, we're all grateful for that. yes, a tour would be great!

  • It's always nice to come across other penguin cafe fans. Great stuff. Are you going to see them in London next week?

  • potkettle - it really is good to come across like-minded folk. unfortunately i'm out of england on the concert dates - are you going? - martin

  • I went on Tuesday. It was wonderful and they played this piece. I hadn't got that the ascending arpeggio parts are meant to be the "yodel" but it was obvious after being pointed out to me!

The ending of the concert was really quite emotional. Nearly welled up a couple of times.

  • potkettle - that sounds great and what a wonderful occasion - i can esasily believe how emotional it would be. thanks for letting me in on the arpeggio significance (i also never realised that, and yet, as you say, it becomes sort of obvious, doesn't it!). i'm hoping to put on another penguin cafe soon. thanks for telling me how it went - martin

  • Love this version,it sounds so right.Have you any more Penguin covers?

  • thanks, topper 88, for your comment and I'm really glad you like my version - I've got another penguin nearly sorted, the one that starts with a classical melody then goes into "la bamba" - though it might sound better with a second player in the "la bamba" section - we'll see - martin

  • Ahhh...this one sounds like "Prelude & Yodel". I'm sure Simon would have loved your guitar solo !! Thank you very much for your posting !!

  • It's a wonderful thought that Simon might have liked my version of "Prelude & Yodel" - thanks, zeitenzauber (sweet times?), for your kind reply - Martin.

  • You're a very good guitarist. Not usually the kind of music that i'd listen to, but i really enjoyed this. Thanks.

  • thanks for your comment - glad you liked the solo - martin

  • Simply amazing. Penguin cafe was the only thing I feel I missed out on by growing up in the USA.

  • thanks for your comment ian - i actually came across them a bit later on here so never got to see them play live - which would've been great. Cheers from the uk.

  • Nice!

  • very glad you like my solo mnx58 - martin

  • The name of that song is "Prelude & Yodel."

    Nice arrangement!

  • thanks, mitchell, for the title of this great composition, which

i'll now add to the video title. Glad you liked my arrangement - i had to find a way of playing it somehow! martin
