i don't know how to send tabs, Fredrik, so her's some info on playing it - it's in D with the 6th string tuned down to low D, the only other chords are G and A - notice that the G chord needs 5th fret on string 6 to allow for the re-tuned string.. in the first part the thumb plays 'clawhammer' - that means it alternates between bass strings, and in the second part the tune is played on the bass strings and the fingers add 'little' chords where possible on the high strings. let me know - cont'd
thanks for that, grendelrichard1, and i must agree it's a great tune and one which often pops into my head - cheers from the uk to brilliant bahrain - martin.
There is just something about this song. And the way you ply it. Simon Jeffes would have loved your rendition, I think. Still gives me goosebumps. Just love it.
i know what you mean and i agree - i played it on tape going down south with a great model to draw by the sea, and this adds to the music's effect even more - cheers from the uk - martin.
Well done, and a thoughtful, competent interpretation. I like your style of playing and your version of the PCO classic gives is a little ease, a casualness, yet is faithful to the song. Nice. Cheers!
thanks for this comment, fahnke, and it's good to know that people like yourself give the music serious attention - cheers from the good old uk to the good old u s of a - martin.
thanks for that, bigalli, and i'm sure you could soon work out this solo for yourself - it's got a down-tuned string 6 - to D - (as i'm sure you knew!) - keep posting your solos - cheers martin.
thanks for that - and i know that if i write to someone i always want a reply, so i always reply myself to everyone who writes to me when i have the time - cheers from the uk to terrific trinidad and tobago - martin.
I have listened to your rendition of this song at least 50 times. I think what you have done is wonderful and amazing, I am a huge fan if the PCO and now I am a fan of you, At 1:15 it gives me chills! Wonderful. Just wonderful.
thanks for your very appreciative comment and it's great to have an american fan! - i had a listen to 1.15 to see which bit it was, and i think that's one of my favourite bits too - attempting to emulate the cello in the original - cheers from the uk to the U S of A - martin.
Greetings from Brazil, just saw the movie Mary and Max and got thrilled by the soundtrack. I found out it was from Penguin Cafe Orchestra and I just thought I should browse your work online. Very sensitive and original.
that's great, and i'm right now working on another penguin cafe to put onto youtube - it needs 2 guitars so i've got to wait till my brother can get round to play the other guitar - cheers from the uk - martin.
thanks very much for your comment - i can more or less understand it - and as i can't reply in spanish, i'll just say all best wishes from me in the uk to you in splendid spain - martin.

alistair - glad that you liked my version of simon jeffes wonderful composition - and i must say, lots of things i now really like happened also by chance - cheers martin
chris - thanks for your very positive comments and i'd like to think that simon would have appreciated it - his music always had a wide area of acceptance - cheers, martin
allariz 1234 - i'm really glad you like my version of the penguin cafe solo. Also let me say how sympathetic i am over the air crash at your airport - people in england are upset and supportive. - martin.
really glad you like my arrangement of the penguin cafe solo. If you look below our comments i've put a reply to hanklovesnumbers which gives the details of how to play it. here's wishing you many impressive hours with the campers! cheers - martin
hanklovesnumbers - i knew the tune from a tape and worked out the melody on strings 1 2 and 3, then got that rhythmic bass by dropping string 6 to D and playing strings 6 and 4 with my thumb, adding more string 4s with index finger, - then put the melody an octave lower and shifted the rhythm onto small chords on strings 1 2 and 3. but, of course, you must wear your hat whilst doing it! - martin.
i admit, i had to look up 'touque' in wikipedia, and happily it doesn't sound too bad and not at all derogatory - have a happy christmas, einstraus - martin
This is a beautiful melody played well. The more I listen to Simon Jeffes music and peoples' interpretations of his work the more I think he was a rare and brilliant composer. At any rate, I love this video. It's a work of art.
jburke55 - thanks very much for your positive comment and i agree, simon had a unique compositional genius which, happily, so many people recognised - martin
this is such a beautiful rendition of that song andypandywright! 10x kudos. i would've given so much to go to london to see them perform on the 11th and 12th. i can only hope they will consider a tour. 5 stars definitely for this..
bendingsyllables - thanks very much for your comment - it's much appreciated. also thanks for posting all the great penguin cafe music, we're all grateful for that. yes, a tour would be great!
I went on Tuesday. It was wonderful and they played this piece. I hadn't got that the ascending arpeggio parts are meant to be the "yodel" but it was obvious after being pointed out to me!
The ending of the concert was really quite emotional. Nearly welled up a couple of times.
potkettle - that sounds great and what a wonderful occasion - i can esasily believe how emotional it would be. thanks for letting me in on the arpeggio significance (i also never realised that, and yet, as you say, it becomes sort of obvious, doesn't it!). i'm hoping to put on another penguin cafe soon. thanks for telling me how it went - martin
thanks, topper 88, for your comment and I'm really glad you like my version - I've got another penguin nearly sorted, the one that starts with a classical melody then goes into "la bamba" - though it might sound better with a second player in the "la bamba" section - we'll see - martin
It's a wonderful thought that Simon might have liked my version of "Prelude & Yodel" - thanks, zeitenzauber (sweet times?), for your kind reply - Martin.
thanks for your comment ian - i actually came across them a bit later on here so never got to see them play live - which would've been great. Cheers from the uk.
I'd love some tabs for this, if not I guess I'll just copy from the video...

PCO have been musical heros to me since I was 16 in '82
that's an A+ rendition, I must say. Simon Jeffes would give it the thumbs up, I'm sure of it.
Thanks for the technical explanation behind the playing too :-) and thanks for taking the time to post this up.
