your blowing the sparks to hard its goonnnna fly in yo face buuduyy. also use the sharp side of the metal to ignite and put pressure on the head of the metal
Fred - thanks again, always appreciate your honest videos. Nice to see someone fail on something and then practice until you get it right. Thanks again.
Great video, Fred! We are just now in the process of assembling our 3-day bags for our respective cars because we live in California, which is earthquake prone. Anyway, I found this video quite useful. Thanks for sharing it!
I was able to light some t-paper with a fire stick. It's not enough to make sparks, you need to produce a miniature ember that lands on the paper to ignite it, otherwise you are just creating a lightshow. XD
@fredhart Yes I saw that, it's the reason why I went back to try myself at the fire stick method again. It works, but people should indeed try this before they need it. Another method worth checking out would probably be the bow drill. It's a bit more involved and requires some bush craft skills.
o man, I can't stand those peeps! lol, When I was kid, and they would be in an Easter basket, I would just toss them in the trash. But every year they would show up again. Well, not for the last 45 years, before that... haha, yeah, starting fires indoors, outdoors, it's fun everywhere!
Another great video Fred! ... Isn't the President sworn to defend the Constitution? I thought I read or heard that somewhere...???? Well, this President hates the Second Amendment and is on record as being against the right of citizens to carry firearms. Right after I watched your Alert video I called the NRA and renewed my not even close to expired NRA annual membership and told them to not to send me the magazine but put all the money towards legislative action. I also gave them a donation.
fred, just make sure if you use toilet paper out in the wilderness,it's not used paper..wouldn't want to kill all the wildlife off :) just kidding, great vid, learned something new..
you need a zippo and a pint of gas....proven fire starters....really though cotton balls soaked in vaseline stored in a medicin bottle work wonders....been there done it!
i had to laugh. your Tony Stewart shirt just said "Stew" the whole time, and then with the peeps i got hungry. I had to go to the store for beef stew and peeps
Yeah fred, for the "jet lighter" it does not use battery, which is a good thing - does not run out. google "piezoelectric" if ur interested (can fail mechanically though). the jet action is useful, but also burns fuel fast.
had one cheap ass ferrocium rod too, worked bad, and less than a milimeter deep. the core didnt give sparks at all. Waste of $, trashed it. Also once bought chinese magnesium block 4 testing, was a copy of the US army issue and only little cheaper. the rod on it sparked ok, but the block itself was cast out of alluminium, which does not work of course. The original US army one works well, and theswedish "light my fire" rods work perfect also.
very intresting video as always Fred. was the bear grylls fire steel made from ferocerium ?and a cool little tip; wrap a rubber band on those lighters ( rubber will catch fire even when wet ).A good day
@fredhart it really doesnt need to be all fine you can just tear off a piece and it only takes a little bit of steel wool with medium amount of tinder but great vid keep em comin

You had the firesteel striker facing the wrong way, follow the instructions on the striker - or better still use a knife.

I think you may have been using the wrong side of the steel on the fire steel. One side of it has a little burr on it to better throw sparks.
