Same gene to make eyes--but a very different kind of eye. Would this not mean that the gene wasn't the code for constructing the eye, but rather some kind of ON-OFF switch for having an eye at all.
The same set of genes feeds all animals, he says. Can you put this same ON-OFF switch in something with an eyespot and get the same results?
Dawkins helped lead the way here in 'The Selfish Gene' by letting up look at the genes rather than the animals and plants themselves! It's freakin beautiful!
Very cool video but yeah I was left with many questions also. So is he saying the common ancestor possessed all the genes in the beginning, if so what happens with random mutation adding information to DNA. When did the gene come into play that directs the formation of the eyes? Damn you HOX gene, sorry I am a laymen so someone please explain.
This is very interesting, but it makes abiogenesis look much more difficult. The hard work of getting information from scratch has to be done at some point:either during evolution or during aboigenesis. If the base of the Tree of Life has all these amazing toolkits, where did they get them ? Evolution is siphoning off the problem to Origin of Life.
In this video, they were talking about the origin of animal life, not life in general. So, they would have got the 'toolkit' from the earlier protozoa they evolved from. The origin of life is likely to be RNA.
yeah I never really understood what the point was behind the talking snake and magic apple story. I say that the very fact that you are alive and aware of this life is in fact GOD itself. not a man sittin up in the clouds with a white beard.
What? Are you saying that you believe in transcendentism? Or are you saying that we should believe in Yahweh because you don't understand what the video is saying?
no, but lets put it this way even tough is funny, if you believe in god, and he doesnt really exist, no big deal, but if you dont believe in god, and it happens to be one, you are pretty much screwed, because u r going to hell.......
I can say that for any of the unproven beliefs. You don`t believe in Thor so he`ll kill you with a bolt of lightning. You don`t believe in Allah so you`ll miss out on 72 virgins and go to Jahannam. "Just in case" is not an argument for the existence of God.
(Sorry I spammed your comment by accident, it was a slip of the mouse.)
@steevmac God claims to have always existed -- without beginning -- therefore the question of his "creation" is flawed. The creation (universe and everything in it) requires a creator of infinite wisdom and power...God!
@markpianoman Do you believe the claims of everybody who tells you they've always existed? A claim is simply not enough to render the question "flawed". The question "does all complexity require a creator?" directly addresses the issue of whether the claim is true in the first place.
If God is a complex being, is it even possible for him to always have existed? Is a complex, intelligent God automatically the default state of a universe? Can the universe also "claim" to have just always existed?

Completely different eye on a completely different animal from the same gene?! Quite an amazing discovery.

Think about this. Does all complexity require a creator?
God must be complex to have created the universe, so who created God?
Now think about the question again. Does all complexity require a creator?

and that is one of the most brilliant ways of putting that all unanswerable question did u think of it urself?
