Arthur was fated to fall as soon as Mordred was conceived. And even though he was tricked into having sex with Morgana, the universe still holds him responsible for the sin of incest and thus he falls to Mordred, the result of that incest.

There are actually quite a few versions of Mordred's story. Some say the mother is Morgaine. Some say Morgan LeFay and some say Morgause. And some say Morgan leFay is Morgause and so both are his mother

actually The wizard Merlin predicted that a child born on May Day would kill King Arthur and wipe out his kingdom. That's another problem-there are so many different versions of the legends!

Morgan le Fey seems to have both hated Arthur AND brought him to Avalon. She was Arthur's sister and/or father of Mordred, who was either Arthur's brother, nephew, or son . . .

Mordred was heir to the throne after Arthur, but that was denied by Arthur, so they had a war about it and killed each other. Or maybe not.
