Stupid! Video games can help us learn stuff, they provide us with great entertainment and so on....
Violent games are all around us, Little Big Planet, Minecraft, Mario and lots of other games. Assassins creed is full of violence but it contains a crap load of history facts, in fact I can't even think of one game without violence.
I sadly don't have time in my life to listen to the debate in it's entirety, but I will say this:
I've seen an increase in aggressive behaviour between fans after a football or hockey game. Football (American football, not soccer) and hockey are contact sports and teach aggression. Should they come under the same scrutiny as video games?
Oh, sure! Blame the video games instead of the retarded parents who can't even watch their own kids! Some kid goes and jumps out a window and kills himself, and his mom goes and sues the directors of Superman movies. She should have just watched her own kid!!!
Sorry, but when I play video games, the trill comes from the tactics i use, not necessarily the murder...I like exercising my brain and sometimes video games give me that opportunity (games like CoD).

i can remember a few years ago where a person robbed a store to get fallout 3 and guess who they blamed it on nope not the guy who robbed the store nope they blamed it on fallout 3 and lets just say i kill someone and i happen to play a lot of halo did halo make me do it no i don't think so that's completely irrelevant there's a big difference between real life and videos games and if you cant tell the difference between them then there's something wrong with you in the first place
i'm not gonna waste another 30 minutes listening to Brad buschmans garbage & wholly in-conclusive results (Noise torture for kids...FFS). i'll say this....A violent video game could serve as a catalyst to push an already SHAKEY person over the edge, Brads arguement being: if you remove the game that person wont flip-out. Well Brad, i submit that any already Unstable person is just as likely to FLIP watching the tellie-tubbies as they are through violent media. "corrolation is not causation".
hey im a 14 year old girl who looves violent video games (goreness!!!!!) and i dont fight...physically (well yea i do hit people once in a while but thats another story)
ok that 15 year longitudinal study that he talks about at 22:11 hes got that rong the facts he says are rong women were 4 times as likely to have PUNCHED CHOKED or BEATEN and boys were 3 times as likely to have COMMIT CRIMES "science new for kids" "Violent video games may have a harmful effect on the brain"
Who is buying and letting them play these violent ADULT rated games? erm.... parents maybe? This debate always pisses me off royally. TV has major beef with the game industry (maybe to do with stealing mass viewers) so is always looking to slander games and gamers. I chainsaw people all the time in gears why the fuck would a grab a real one a hack my neighbour up even though he is a dick.
Buschman doesn´t know what he´s talking about. He makes lots of unwarranted assumptions about video games (being forced to identifiy with the violent characters??? since when?) I am in the field too. Lots of research on this topic is very badly done and Buschman seems to have a knack for reading only these research papers that agree with him. Theres lots of controversial research too... But maybe he is just on a crusade...
"You get points by killing people to advance to the next level in the game"
It doesn't sound like this guy has ever played a next-gen game in his life. Games in my opinion are FAR more rewarding than any movie or TV show out there. I've been more attached emotionally to characters in Heavy Rain than in any movie, and the theme in Bioshock is so much more complex and intelligent than most movies these days.
Stop playing pacman social science dude. Play some good story-driven ones before u bash.
video games help people get their frustrations out and they probaly pick angry people and make them play Uber hard games just to get the resaults that they want...
I think of it as therapy. I find placing a bullet into the eye socket of a nazi or zombie, then seconds later nailing him/it in the crotch and knee, followed by a quick and sound double tap relieves me of a great deal of stress.
...or a nazi zombie, thats two in one. Nothing more stress releaving than killing a nazi and a zombie with one bullet. Or even 5 nazis and 5 zombies with one.
um.. infact violent video games have made me less violent as i take out my fustration on killing those dirty bastards in god of war 3 rather than breaking stuff around :D
I hate the way old people always complain about how violent things have become lately since video games begun, and glorify their own youth, yet they forget that in their time there were two world wars in the space of fifty years and no video games lol.
Heh, old veterans who took part in war, making them official KILLERS telling their kids not to play violent VG. That's what they call "ethical" for ya.
@sundude10 Exactly the point as far as I'm concerned. It was inevitable enough without the pre-exposure to war. You honestly think kids today pay enough attention to world issue VS entertainment that they'll be responsible enough to choose policy in humanity over war? lol The next COD should be a game about diplomacy, if you fail your diplomatic policy you go to war. You would get to fight the war, but you automatically lose the game. I wonder if the emphasis for most would be victory? Or war?
@sundude10 People who act like this violence is new are full of shit. Look at how much murder there is in Shakespeare, or the Godfather. Look at all the violence in ancient Greek plays, hell look at the Roman gladiators.
@sundude10 not only that but segragation and thereby racism, sexism, and just all around misunderstanding and unacceptance. Yeah the old days sound great dont they. fucking idiots.
I can understand though why people are concerend by it. Basicly because it's because you are in controll of the actions as opposed to movies when you're not.
Yet I'm not like Jack Thompson telling people that violent video games create murderers.
It's not about banning violent video games but we should rather focus on selling proceduers.
Games like GTA 4 should not be sold to minors for example in my mind.
The ESRB is there for a reason. But people dont pay attention to that and buy thier kids games like GTA4 and than bitch about it on TV. Minors arent allowed to buy a M game without an ID, or unless they look older than they really are. Its all the parents, it was the parents 30years ago when these things didnt exist and the crime rate was even higher, adn its the parents today, now they just have an excuse.
now it actually calms me down...even if i get red hot ill just get on live....Games r Games i see more people fighting more in football and contact sports more dan video games Leave Us gamerz alone
All those crazy soccer fans who riot in the street werent actually watching the game. They were playing GTA Chinatown Wars on thier PSPs. lol
Parents need to stop and take a look at themselves, they need to watch what they buy thier kids and not just get them a game and use it as a babysitter and then act surprised when they try to drive away with thier car.
it's not violent video games that make people violent it's the society they live in that makes them violent.Especially when parents don't know how to raise their children based on their gender.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Try dealing with a 16 year old after he plays for 5 hours and has enemy combat on the brain. Today's kids are subjects of total mind control by the Sony's and other game developers who know what these kids want. Gone are the days of exercise, flying kites, street ball, on and on- anything that doesn't deal with a TV or computer.
How can a parent compete with the 24 hours advertising and "cool factor". . Bottom line is you can't compete with big money driven advertising that is all around us.
I see video games as stress relief, If you just got your ass kicked at school people just go and cut somebody in half in gears of war. If you were really angry and didnt have anything to relive your stress that awful idea to go over to the guys house and see if he can punch you with a knife in his eye.
lets keep it simple. kids need something to do. it doesnt have to be right but boredom can make someone do some crazy mess. thats why there is video games. if your kid doesnt have a video game, he/she will do something else. and if they dont like you..........(wide eye stare)
Maybe it does, but I agree with previous posts in that real life is way different from video games, and the difference is obvious. It does make one desensitized, but not violent. I do think that there is a problem with playing video games too much, because they take away from your social life.
there is no problem with video game violence. Any mentally healthy gamer will tell you there in for the thrill, not the kill. Crimes related to video game violence always occur from a kid/person with a mental defect or are outcasts.
if it was true games can make u violent/a trained killer then surely by now there would of been tons of different revolution there are those of us who have taxes and goverment why havent they been over thrown by the violent trained gamers if something like violent video games did cause viloence im pretty sure every1 would see it very clearly and as i look out my window i see the city not burning so we have no problem
parents all over america push and urge their kids into sports like football that causes injuries that can be severe. injuries from video games.... cramped wrist? and yes sum retards cant tell beteen real and not real but why do we keep blaming the video games for crimes commited? theres always gonna be the people that fuck it up for the rest of us. out of the millions that play violent games i would like to kno how many have commited a violent crime. maybe 10?
true i mean the only violence we show is verbal to some1 else only and maybe throw the controller in a stress fit we all do it but i dont think that would some day end up with me killing some1
Are you being sarcastic, becuase violence in schools and among kids has dropped dramatically in the past few years there is just more coverage so you here about the violent acts more.
Lmao I got into a huge arguement with my History teacher about this he blamed video games for violent behavior in kids. I was like yeah every time I play GTA 4 I get the urge to steal cars and beat up hookers. I was using sarcasm. And we argued for a bit then I got sent to the office with disrupting class lol.
Good for you for standing up for yourself despite the consequences. If I were in your family I'd be really proud of your bravery. Your teacher's really blind.
I think if you didn't use sarcasm openly, though, he'd have an even harder time disputing your logic. If he can't dismiss you as a troublemaker, then he has to actually think about what you say, and it will haunt him until he starts using what little common sense he has.
If video games cause so much violence, how come most people who play video games aren't violent? Video games rarely push people to performing violent actions, and when they do push people into commiting violent crimes... that person was already fucked up and the problem only lies deeper than the video game.
So no, they are harmless. They are as harmless as porn, scary movies, and books.
Yeah, I played Duck Hunt at the age of 6 using a fake gun; I love the excessive blood and gore in Fallout 3 and such, but the few times I've actually seen anyone hurt in real life, I've literally *freaked out.* That's because the brain knows there's a HUGE difference between what is real and what is fake.
all i got to say is, do violent games cause violent people or do violent people play violent games, as in there is billions of ppl that play violent games and comparitivly only a handfull are actually violent ppl
Experiments that control for personality variables such as aggressiveness or hostility seem to consistently show evidence that supports watching violence and not seeing negative consequences associated with it generally leads to more violent acts/criminal behavior in real life. Look up some of the research yourself if you get the chance.
you know by logic of "violent Video Games Cause Violence" I should be a psyopaflic killer bent on world domination. Ive played violent games since I was the original GTA (PC version in 1997) and I 12 at the time.
This whole story is good for violent people. Do whatever you want. I can kill 12 people and say GTA made me do it. Does anyone just think that some kids are just miserable excuses for people.
Hm..I personally think its a big piece of BULLSHIT. I'm 14, I first played GTA when i was about 9 or 10, you don't see me goinf around stealing cars, or beating up old ladies with a bat.
Or I play Mortal Kombat, and I all of a sudden I want to freeze someone and break them into shards.
Kids play Super Mario Bros. and you don't see kids trying to jump on turtles.
I've been playing violent video games forEVER and I'm not a murderous psycho. I'm not aggresive at all, I've never hurt anyone at ALL
you're right we dont see you doing that...we dont see you at all in fact...this is the internet. For all we know you could be lying...just messin wicha lol
if he wanted to lie he wouldn't post anything and I to have been playing video games since I was 2 and I don't killl people or rape them or sestroy peoples property or steal it. Video games have done nothing but have a positive affect.
it's true. i mean it really really really does come down to how the parents raise their child. the child themself isn't going out buying video games, it's their mom or dad. and since they are the parents they should filter what their child plays, up to a certain age
no games do not make kids Violent the parents do if your kid is Violent then your a terrible parent. and as well i wanna bring up the columbine incident they wanted to blame marilyn manson yet there were more bombs dropped over the sea that day. its the fucking media not games or music Fuck the media and parents pay attention to your kids instead of being self centered
its a scapegoat people dont want to admit there kids are crazy and out of control its like marilyn manson being blamed for school shootings when the guys who did it had never herd of him
People are naturally violent why are they trying to blame this for it. Besides where can I get guns? Its not like all of a sudden I get all the guns from rachet and clank and go on a rampage.
If violent video games cause violence, there should be shootings in public places every half hour. And not just in America, but all over the world. Cuz everyone plays it.
It's no surprise that a parent or the child will blame the games instead of the family that exposed their child to violence when the child wasn't old enough or tought how to understand violence and the fantasy and reality of it. Violent aren't to blame, violent people and those who raised them are.
pokemons a good game? Ok leave your mom and dad when your 10. Throw balls of animals. Walk into peoples houses before knocking. Animal abuse fight until your cat faints.
they talked about violent tv shows. we have just as much a chance of becoming violent by watching tv thn by playing videogames. adults are blaming us because we cant do anything. yet they let us watch violent movies. doesnt make any sense...
Stupid! Video games can help us learn stuff, they provide us with great entertainment and so on....

If you want to ban violence, why don't go all the way? Ban Boxing, UFC, WWF, Military guys on the news, Torture of Jesus, predators on Animal Planet ... you name it. Violence is violence, right? The world is a retarded place and retarded people is given too much shit about their opinion. Fuck it, and fuck democracy.

i'm not gonna waste another 30 minutes listening to Brad buschmans garbage & wholly in-conclusive results (Noise torture for kids...FFS). i'll say this....A violent video game could serve as a catalyst to push an already SHAKEY person over the edge, Brads arguement being: if you remove the game that person wont flip-out. Well Brad, i submit that any already Unstable person is just as likely to FLIP watching the tellie-tubbies as they are through violent media. "corrolation is not causation".

Or even 5 nazis and 5 zombies with one.

alexselby97 1 year ago
@sundude10 Exactly the point as far as I'm concerned. It was inevitable enough without the pre-exposure to war. You honestly think kids today pay enough attention to world issue VS entertainment that they'll be responsible enough to choose policy in humanity over war? lol The next COD should be a game about diplomacy, if you fail your diplomatic policy you go to war. You would get to fight the war, but you automatically lose the game. I wonder if the emphasis for most would be victory? Or war?
JustinLB82 1 year ago
@sundude10 People who act like this violence is new are full of shit. Look at how much murder there is in Shakespeare, or the Godfather. Look at all the violence in ancient Greek plays, hell look at the Roman gladiators.

video games are no more violent than movies, TV shows, the news (sometimes), web shows, comic books, novels, & yes, even your precious holy books.
if you want to get rid of the games, you can get rid of the rest too!
in the end, it doesn't really matter anyway though because it's NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
you can whine & cry about it all you want, but you're not doing any good.
good luck with that! =-p

i forgot to mention most sports as well.
there's plenty more too, but that'll do.
like i said before, it doesn't matter anyway because video games are here to stay!
Zentz29 1 year ago
I can understand though why people are concerend by it. Basicly because it's because you are in controll of the actions as opposed to movies when you're not.
Yet I'm not like Jack Thompson telling people that violent video games create murderers.
It's not about banning violent video games but we should rather focus on selling proceduers.
Games like GTA 4 should not be sold to minors for example in my mind.
Can't wait for Splinter Cell Conviction.
SeanCarols00 1 year ago
@SeanCarols00
The ESRB is there for a reason. But people dont pay attention to that and buy thier kids games like GTA4 and than bitch about it on TV. Minors arent allowed to buy a M game without an ID, or unless they look older than they really are. Its all the parents, it was the parents 30years ago when these things didnt exist and the crime rate was even higher, adn its the parents today, now they just have an excuse.

it's not violent video games that make people violent it's the society they live in that makes them violent.Especially when parents don't know how to raise their children based on their gender.

How can a parent compete with the 24 hours advertising and "cool factor". . Bottom line is you can't compete with big money driven advertising that is all around us.

i've done it many times. i've been a gamer for a long time & my nephews are both very much into video games.
i have no problem getting them to go outside and find something to do. i take them to parks, the beach, take them with me when i walk the dogs etc.
i also have no problem getting them to stop playing to eat dinner, go to bed etc.
apperently the difference is that they listen to me.

I see video games as stress relief, If you just got your ass kicked at school people just go and cut somebody in half in gears of war. If you were really angry and didnt have anything to relive your stress that awful idea to go over to the guys house and see if he can punch you with a knife in his eye.
skytop082 2 years ago 2
lets keep it simple. kids need something to do. it doesnt have to be right but boredom can make someone do some crazy mess. thats why there is video games. if your kid doesnt have a video game, he/she will do something else. and if they dont like you..........(wide eye stare)

Maybe it does, but I agree with previous posts in that real life is way different from video games, and the difference is obvious. It does make one desensitized, but not violent. I do think that there is a problem with playing video games too much, because they take away from your social life.

WynneL 2 years ago
If video games cause so much violence, how come most people who play video games aren't violent? Video games rarely push people to performing violent actions, and when they do push people into commiting violent crimes... that person was already fucked up and the problem only lies deeper than the video game.
So no, they are harmless. They are as harmless as porn, scary movies, and books.

I always ask that. If video games suddenly turn you into a killer then why havn't I killed anyone despite playing titles like GTA at an early age?

Yeah, I played Duck Hunt at the age of 6 using a fake gun; I love the excessive blood and gore in Fallout 3 and such, but the few times I've actually seen anyone hurt in real life, I've literally *freaked out.* That's because the brain knows there's a HUGE difference between what is real and what is fake.

Experiments that control for personality variables such as aggressiveness or hostility seem to consistently show evidence that supports watching violence and not seeing negative consequences associated with it generally leads to more violent acts/criminal behavior in real life. Look up some of the research yourself if you get the chance.

There are three reasons that a video game could cause violence.
The attacker had psychological problems and/or bad parents.

It's no surprise that a parent or the child will blame the games instead of the family that exposed their child to violence when the child wasn't old enough or tought how to understand violence and the fantasy and reality of it. Violent aren't to blame, violent people and those who raised them are.
