Even though these instruments are all electronic, there is a "humanity" to them. Today's digital NOISE being passed off as music has no identity at all. It's all swirling swooping frenzy without soul or musical structure. I have no emotional connection to the synth and sample music being made today because there is no attempt at creating a connection with the listener. Now it's all about throwing a thousand tracks of SOUNDS at you because they CAN. You seem right at home in that room! I envy you
Nice one! I remember listening to that fat synth bass sound as a little kid and thinking it was cooler than any guitar or drum in the world. Are those inversions of standard chords or just really unusual chords, like 11ths without the 3rd and 9? Was Nena rewriting the laws of music? ;)
Great demo! I believe the synth shown in the video was an OB-Xa, with cuts to a Prophet 5 - it's been ages since I saw the vid. I own an OB-8 and a Prophet 5, but they both need marginal repairs. I'm in limbo right now, so the repairs will wait. I want to use them again. I'm most impressed that you have a Sequential Prophet T-8. I would rate that among the highest echelons of vintage analog polysynths. The best! Memorymoog too, but I've heard of reliability issues. Love all my synths. Each is A+
The OB truly has some very warm strings & a fat sound on the low end.....Hopefully Mr. T. Oberheim will reproduce the OB as an updated version with MIDI output like Dave Smith did with the Prophet 8 that i bought myself for Christmas
I had an Oberheim OB-X 8-voice back in 1980. I went to a Dixie Dregs concert, and T Lavitz had just gotten an OB-Xa, with this "split keyboard" (BIG deal at the time). He was all proud of it and drug me up on stage during soundcheck to see it (we were buds back then), and we started playing around on it. We started getting goofy and played "Heart and Soul" on it, and the crowd went nuts !!!:P Good times !!! Great sound, and nice keys in the pic. Peace:-)
@markduff Original, with one exception: Fahrenkrog-Petersen plays the reprise of the main hook ( @ 1:24 ) with BOTH the bass and the right hand, at the SAME time. This is a little tricky to play I agree, needs lots of practise.
thanks for watching....? no thank you for sharing this awesome video and i have a question was this the same keyboard that was used by the band back in the days?
hi. thanks for your comment. i know that the band used the Oberheim OBx which is the version before this model. they might have used the obxa. they also used a prophet 5.
Very, very nice. What's make the OB sound so great? I seem to recall people saying it's all about the filter. I have never understood how the filter can create such a fantastic sound though.
hi thanks for your comment. ahhh what makes the obxa sound good? its not just the filter its the oscillators. the voice boards. it is a phatter and more organic sounding synth compared to some other synths. basically every voice board has its slight differences in tuning etc. which the ear picks up. which is why it sounds busy. with many things going on in the sound. (not clean) hope this helps. its wierd to explain.
could have been a prophet 5 as well. in the video it is, yet on the live concert its a Oberheim OBX i used the OBXa for this because my OBX doesnt work at the moment
I have 3 OBX, 2 OBX Version "2" (4 Voice with JL Cooper Kit extension 96 Patch + 8 Voice in excellent condition with revision) and the last it's a version "3" with Kenton Midi and 6 Voice...i search the last version for the Computer Interface, i have also Jupiter 8, MS-10, MS-20, Six-Trak and Roland AX-7
Love watching this while listening.
