I'm a shredder myself, but I don't just play scales and arpeggios up and down I try to structure my solo's out make is more interesting for the ear and the eye. I think clearity is a big thing too and Richie wasn't super clean hear but cleaner then a lot of other big name guitarists of that age, then say a Mick Mars of CC Deville
