Sad but true, this was actually the first of many embarrassing playoff losses for Riley. There is no way in the world LA ever should have lost this series. You see Ralph peeking at the basket before releasing. Kareem could have put his large hand over Ralph's eyes without touching him, and he would not have gotten a good look at all. Lakers would have won in OT, but Houston would have won Game 6 back at The Summit.
Rockets did eventually win two titles but they could have done so much more without the drugs and injuries. The 86 team is probably the most underrated team in Rockets History.

The big reason this was the apex for this Rockets team was drugs. They had already lost their starting point guard - John Lucas - during the 85-86 season. And the next year, they lost 2 other guards Mitch Wiggins and Lou Lloyd all to failed drug tests.
They could have been good if their backcourt had been able to keep their noses clean.
Reid was a key reason the Rockets made the Finals in '81 if you recall. Like the '86 team, everyone who played the '81 Rockets focused on Moses, Moses, Moses. But Reid was legitimate outside threat. In that year, he played both guard and small forward.

As it turned out, this would be the apex for this Rockets team. They would be eliminated in the 2nd round the next year, and would never get back to the finals for 8 years with Akeem and a whole new cast. Too bad, though, the Rockets didn't take Jordan and Akeem didn't go to the Blazers. There would have been 2 instant rivals that would have been a big threat to the Lakers.
If you remember the Rockets should have picked Clyde Drexler but they chose Rodney Mccray instead. If that had happened the following year they might have not gotten the chance to pick Akeem. The what if's!

The good old days. I remember watching this game with my brother and waking up my mom because we started to jump & scream when Ralph hit that shot. This was a decent team but the loss of John Lucas 2 drug problems then the following yr Mitchel Wiggins & Lewis Loyd gone for the same reason hurt this team. Ralph started his downward spiral with injuries that led to his trade. Would have loved to have seen what this team could have done if it had remained the same.

The Fakers just didn't want any part of The Celtics. They would've lost for the 7th time out of 8 meetings in the finals. Either that, or it was a total choke by the Fakers. 4 out of 5 wins during the season and then lose 4 straight!?

The big reason this was the apex for this Rockets team was drugs. They had already lost their starting point guard - John Lucas - during the 85-86 season. And the next year, they lost 2 other guards Mitch Wiggins and Lou Lloyd all to failed drug tests.
They could have been good if their backcourt had been able to keep their noses clean.

By the way, the most underrated player on that Rockets team had to be Robert Reid. Everyone focused on the Towers, but Reid was a pretty solid guard.

Reid was a key reason the Rockets made the Finals in '81 if you recall. Like the '86 team, everyone who played the '81 Rockets focused on Moses, Moses, Moses. But Reid was legitimate outside threat. In that year, he played both guard and small forward.

There is no way the team of the 80s, with Magic, Kareem, James Worthy, etc. were going to simply HAND OVER a Western Conference title to Houston.
L.A. just didn't have the team that year. It wasn't for lack of trying though.

As it turned out, this would be the apex for this Rockets team. They would be eliminated in the 2nd round the next year, and would never get back to the finals for 8 years with Akeem and a whole new cast. Too bad, though, the Rockets didn't take Jordan and Akeem didn't go to the Blazers. There would have been 2 instant rivals that would have been a big threat to the Lakers.

If you remember the Rockets should have picked Clyde Drexler but they chose Rodney Mccray instead. If that had happened the following year they might have not gotten the chance to pick Akeem. The what if's!
