Metallica slowed down because they accepted more freedom from each band member. A terrible mistake with Lars wanting to be modern, Jason getting pushed away, Kirk not really committing to anything except the solos and James writing more personal lyrics. St. Anger wasn't a sell out record it was a what the fuck is going on record. Nothing was consistent and the quality was crap. However, Death Magnetic is a step in the right direction. Hopefully they can be back on top with their new record.

I wouldn't consider Metallica themselves selling out. It was more of Bob Rock's doing and Megadeth DID sell out. Dave even admits to it. After Countdown To Extinction, Dave wanted to be #1 and took every chance. He slowed down the songs and down tuned them for Youthanasia then he went with a country producer and released Cryptic Writings and Risk. Cryptic was a success while Risk bombed. In reviews and in sales. TWNAH was their attempt to come back but Dave relasped and fucked his arm up.
