linkin park and mudvayne were alright, but there are way better modern day metal bands out there. disturbed, mastodon, chimaira, meshuggah, decapitated etc. i would say avenged sevenfold, but their new album is horrible imo.

@Fluffypopcicle i remember buying this album back when it was new, but there are way better stuff than even those you posted. like cephalic carnage, gorguts, necrophagist, etcetc, they're probably kinda hard to listen to for most people since it's so... well .... chaotic... but has some of the best and most creative music of this era

no, meshuggah is better than all those bands imo. nothing is chaotic after listening to meshuggah. they were the first band to take polyrythmic patterns and time signatures to the extremes that they did. gorguts kind of comes close, but not quite. mastodon isn't topped by any of those bands either. mastodon is more unique, like meshuggah, but not that heavy or insane. those bands are better than disturbed, chimaira, and a7x though.

@Fluffypopcicle I've listened a lot to meshuggah and I find them pretty lightweight actually. Sure they're using nice polyrhythmical patterns but to me it's not really mindblowing cause their riffs are often simplistic melodicaly. Their time signatures are pretty nice too. I do like meshuggah a lot I just miss the melodical madness that some of the other bands I mention has. Viraemia is also a good example of melodical madness, they still play in standard time signatures though.

yeah, meshuggah are mostly rythm based. i enjoy listening to them for the sake of trying to follow the patterns. mors principium est is another good example of melodic madness. i don't understand why pure is their most popular song though. songs like inhumanity, eternity's child, and the harmony remains are a lot better.

Having influence doesn't make something automatically 'good'. The beatles are OK, just horrendously overrated because they were the first to tread down that path. Tell me, do you think the original necessitates the best? In football (soccer), do you think the game's creator is as good at it as Messi, Gerrard or Ronaldo? I personally don't care for 90% of the Beattles' work, however, I respect them and waht they did for rock in general.
