@BirdsintheLake yea is you look closely, he puts his drumstick under his armpit, then mashes the gong, then grabs the stick again.. fukin wild. Pure talent
Hitting a gong and maintaining the rhythm is pretty nice, but it's more a good-looking trick than actual show of drumming prowess, when compared to some other stuff in this short clip.
Bonzo was awesome but only played in 4/4. Carey is brilliant because of his use of poly rhythms. I could watch him for hours. If I had a choice to be President or play like that - I'd take the latter. He's incredible.
The best thing about Danny is he doesn't repackage beats in other songs. Every one song is different and unique. Fuck all the haters out there TooL is the best.
@vicarious987789 he does have some sort of spiritual meditation going on in which he links it to many aspects of his life, including drumming. I forgot where I read it, but even his drumset is arranged in a certain way with those purposes. It's amazing, in my opinion.
xXwufeiXx I hope you are responding to people hating on this video because Danney Carey is not only fast but his ability to keep time separately from the rest of the band without a metronome is incredible
I really wish there was a video of him playing just the drum part for Ticks and Leeches. All those different beats he keeps together while playing that song is mind fucking.
@nystagmuss The size of one's drumset is not really important. As long as it makes all the sounds the drummer is looking for, why would you need more?
the thing that amazes me about danny carey's drumming is that he has such an aggressive drumming style with some of the softest drum sticks ive heard, aka finese
danny is impressive because he is so fluid and the timing is pretty ridiculous. I dont know of any band with timing like tool has in some of its songs. Everyone always pays attention to maynard, which he is probably one of the best vocalists and lyricists in modern music, but instrumental wise, tool is a very impressive and solid band.
danny.. mate, undeniably brilliant.. who is like you.. best band, best guitarist, best bass player, best singer, best DRUMMER and they write amazing songs!! any band can learn so much from TOOL
Man I love that break down at the end. Danny Carey is my favorite drummer definitely. So crisp and perfect. His timing goes along with the song so well, it just seems to hold the song up, make it better.
OVERRATED!!!!! Thats all I have to say about Danny Carey. Nothing that he's doing is even hard. Look up Derek Roddy, Dave Lombardo, George Kollias or Mike Portnoy if you want to see a real drummer. Makes me wish I had a camera so I could post a video and put this guy to shame!
@ilovezildjian All I had to do is look up one video of Derek Roddy for this to emphasize what I said earlier. "A drummer hitting things as fast as possible with something that's more technically difficult makes him better"
Danny Carey is a perfect example of what (IMO anyway) makes good music isn't just the notes you play. It's the space between them. Otherwise, it's just repetitive.
Again, TL;DR Anyone can be taught to play fast and technical. It takes a real musician to make real music.
@ilovezildjian It's actually hard as fuck, what he's playing in this video. You wouldn't know anything about doing anything difficult since trolling is easy.
I F#King Love that he is wearing a Stanislav SZUKALSKI T-shirt! Szukalski is a master sculptor, utterly forgotten and ignored by the "Art" world. The fact that tool was aware of his work speaks bounds about their cultural awareness.
@heihatchios yeah , smth like that ... the thing is every time i let myself in conversation with ppl i meet about music , it often ends on commenting drummers .... and every single time they r trying to convince me that speed is everything ...... little do they know
@xXwufeiXx I can't help tot hink about Jordison when I read your comment, but if you are referring to Danny, then you must know that not only is he known for having a groove right in the pocket, but also for playing different time signatures than those of his other peers. So imagine a guy who is playing to a totally different beat than the bass and guitars, and still manages to create an awesome song...
@N14Kk i'm quite familliar with danny's play style , no need 4 explanation . comment i made has a purpose but in general many ppl think what i said ... sad but true
@xXwufeiXx LOL, you know whats funnnier? when they think that tremolo picking means theyre fucking fast guitarrist, when they're lookin at the wrong hand XD
Danny Carey is the greatest drummer alive today. He has impeccable timing, and often holds the core of a song together while other parts wander off into a different time signature, and when they come back together, he's there, bang on time, to send them off again until the cycles match up again.
Some people mistake speed for great drumming, but speed is nothing without control and placement. Watch/listen to anything by him, you will never hear a misplaced cymbal or drum hit, mark my words.
@Arachxor Danny Carey doesn't use a metronome, the company that makes metronomes call Danny Carey to tune their product :) I agree with you 200%. I am way more impressed buy this guy than all these metal drummers these days. And yes, I love metal, but Danny Carey would eat them for breakfast
As i got older music stoped being the centre of my universe, now my kids come first. Tool is a diffrent thing alltogether though... quitin tool would be like quitin oxygen
omg.... love him :) ... did you noticed the way he put down the ride for the recording of this vid, so that we could see him??? xD in the last 20 years he always had the ride above his head!!! :D
I basically picked Synester and Zacky because they have great stage presence and whenever they do their V formation with the guitars it looks epic.....If u wish feel free to hate... :P
Wait a fucking minute.....he turns around ,takes a new stick and hits a gong ...turns around again takes the old stick and continiues?......how is he doing that?
I love how people instantly go towards these drummers that do retardedly complex and spaztic solos as being "better". Danny Carey is good because his drumming holds everything together. A drummer should show off now and again, no doubt, it keeps things interesting.
A lot of these goofball drummers can't do what Danny Carey does best : provide a solid, deep beat that's interesting and cues everyone else in the band in.
TL ; DR
A great drummer keeps the band together, not show off his ego.
@jarethashaer: Danny Carey is one of the greatest because it is only HIS drumming that adds an almost extra dimension to Tool's music. That being stated, the point remains that when one stumbles on a video titled "Drum Solo", we expect a show of flamboyance and individual expression, not a terminally boring 4/4 beat with some not-so-clever rolls for over a minute. He is just playing the part from Lateralus, so trying to justify this as a drum solo and then rating it as one of the best is inane
@hefuxgr8 I'll agree on the point of this being a "drum solo", it's rather boring; however, I would argue that "solo" in this case means it's just Danny Carey rather than "I'm gonna drop some ridiculous action now, prepare to be amazed". This video being poorly named is probably causing a lot of "Danny Carey sux" ranting ;)
Along with that, he has a tendency to do things that are offbeat, or technical by being strange, or using odd percussion instruments, and it still fits the music. That's hard as hell to do.
Any drummer can double kick while having a stick seizure on their symbols and snare.
@jarethashaer Well, Danny Carey also have some of the sickest solos I have EVER seen. This vid isnt really a solo at all. Otherwise I agree with you fully.
@jarethashaer drumming for a band is one thing but people talk about drummer as drummers and danny carey is far from the best when it comes down to just drumming.
@luniticboofer666 Seriously? If you are not drumming for a band how many people are really listening to you? I spent 2 years marching DCI and I can tell you I think I have watched my practice tapes about...0 times since then. And yes...any jackass can learn to drum but the talented can turn rudiments into music that fits. That is what makes a musician rather than a friggen robot. I can play some mechanical shit like nobodies business but I cannot do what he does. Talent...he has it.
@mrfinn99 ummmm the entire drum community. can i help you out there sir? Let me say it again. People watch drummers as drummers. I, and many others, watch videos of mike mangini, mike portnoy, jerome flood, ray luzier (whos now drumming for korn, ugh.), and others. i see your point in the end and thats what many drummers do, all the great ones, but danny is far from the best. To many people are playing the favorites game on this page and its almost annoying as hearing about travis barker.
@jarethashaer well said. its harder to write a beautiful song that is fluid with the rest of the band while at the same time being creative than it is to churn out impressive drum solos
@jarethashaer The problem is that the people who think these drummers aren't as good just don't understand what he is doing. He plays a lot of really complicated beats that most metal drummers could never wrap their brains around.
@markuscc That's just it, I don't think they're hard to understand at all; they're not complex, just fast. It takes a lot more to think "Ok, theme and variation, syncopation, rhythms that blend and play off one another" than "I'm gonna play 15 linear fills on top of a fast beat and hope it sounds boss" which is what I see from overrated thrash metal. Now, granted, I don't have any interest in that style of music, so I'm biased against that style of drumming.
@informatisse no no, you shouldn't have listened to Schism, it's a real turnoff to first time listeners. What you need to listen to is Right in Two. Knowledge? What the hell? It's supposed to be something of a kind, to stand out on front of others who claim to be the "best" when all you hear is typical shit from them. That's why I love Tool, NIN, and Eminem!
This guy actually records the DRUM FILLS FIRST. Then goes back and records the REGULAR BEATS LAST. How many fucking drummers do you know that record like that?! IT'S EPIC
@Wuuupl I've got to say yeah he's good but Portnoy is so much more skillfull...i'm not a fan of dream theatre or tool so this is a completly independant view point :)
@mxrocker149 For me it's hard to say who the best drummer out of all the drummers out there, because the three your comparing all come from different genres. But on the other note a drummer needs to be well rounded and I do agree that Danny Carey is up there
Bonham, Moon, Peart, and Carey--top Four Rock drummers.

@jarethashaer The problem is that the people who think these drummers aren't as good just don't understand what he is doing. He plays a lot of really complicated beats that most metal drummers could never wrap their brains around.
markuscc 11 months ago
@markuscc That's just it, I don't think they're hard to understand at all; they're not complex, just fast. It takes a lot more to think "Ok, theme and variation, syncopation, rhythms that blend and play off one another" than "I'm gonna play 15 linear fills on top of a fast beat and hope it sounds boss" which is what I see from overrated thrash metal. Now, granted, I don't have any interest in that style of music, so I'm biased against that style of drumming.

@jarethashaer does writeing drum beats using the math behind sacred symbols and complex symmetrical shapes count for anything?

Mike Portnoy is better.

@xPxPatchesxTx Would you compare Adam Jones to John Petrucci? Comparisons are useless unless they're trying to do the same thing

@Wuuupl I've got to say yeah he's good but Portnoy is so much more skillfull...i'm not a fan of dream theatre or tool so this is a completly independant view point :)

Danny Carey is arguably the best drummer to have ever existed. And is, arguably, better than Pert and Rich.
Easily better than Barker and Jordison.
mxrocker149 1 year ago
@mxrocker149 For me it's hard to say who the best drummer out of all the drummers out there, because the three your comparing all come from different genres. But on the other note a drummer needs to be well rounded and I do agree that Danny Carey is up there
