As a Brit it always comes as a bit of a shock at the sheer size of the locos and the lengths of the trains. Impressive shots in this video, pretty countryside as well. Great stuff !
@david245611 Actually, the Y class engines had an entirely different sound. They had a "slosshy" sound which you can hear in this preview. The A class has a sharper exhaust. The Y class could run in either compound or simple settings and each of those had a different sound. If you go to the preview of Pocahontas Glory Vol. 7, you can hear actual sounds of a Y6 on a mine run where it was recorded in both compound and simple operation.
Your 5 inch gauge Y6b is also awesome! Since you like N&W and Y6 class engines, check out the preview of Pocahontas Glory Volume 7, also here on You Tube. You'll find Y6 class locos in all of the Pocahontas Glory videos plus A, J, K, M, and S1 class steam power, all in actual service in the 1950's. We ship to Germany frequently. -JH
WOW Now that was a Hell of a Cool video I have allways loved the N&W and have several real pices in my outdoor railroad collection a N&W PL signal ,a N&W speeder ,a N&W Property line line concrete marker ,a N&W whistle post an a N&W No Trespassing sign all I need is a N&W J class LOL I WISH and i live in Texas no where near the old N&W LOL great railroad
Why don't they find a way to transform garbage into fuel (by using a process the least detrimental to nature) instead of dumping it in the environment.
Steam locomotives could come back in a more modern type using this cheap type of fuel.
@tradomanico - I'm willing to bet that garbage has a much lower calorific content than even lignite coal, let alone anthracite. You would simply have to carry too much of the stuff to give the loco a reasonable range before refuelling.
Damn I don't see why Steam and Diesels can't run together. They would do pretty well. All they have to do is find something else for steam engines to run on and it would work out well. That's a dream I personally want to see happen.
@kmothersil To answer your question it is just the problem of economics. Steam locomotives are extremely labor instensive and require constant attention. With desiels you can just turn them off for the night and walk away, something you can't do with steam. Plus steam uses a lot of coal (or oil) and water to keep pressure that must be refilled often. Desiels in some application can go their entire trip without refueling. I, like you, would rather see steam but I understand why we don't see steam
Well that is true they do need a lot of attention. JBofBrisbane pointed out West Coast Rail and that is one of those few places where that dream of mine happens.
@IllinoisTrains1 if you properly bank the fire, a steam locomotive can go a day or two without attention. By that i mean they can sit idle with a hot fire to keep pressure at a certain level. this saves coal and eliminates the need for a night hostler. It must be done properly though or it wont work correctly. steam does have its efficiencies over diesels too, but the overall easy diesel out modes steam efficiencies.
In the U.K, I got the order form for this DVD with the SPV newsletter this morning {23-1-2010}. Apparently this film sat in a vault waiting to be re-discovered for 45 years. I'll be popping the order form and a cheque in the post forthwith.
One of the best steam action videos I have seen in over 30 years. Crisp steady and awesome footage of the way it was!
Yard scenes, big engines 'walking out of the yard with a train. Up close on-board shots over the tenders of huge steam locomotives laboring up Blue Ridge mountain with 100 cars! DB
i liked the part of the helper cutting off on the fly,, you are not permitted to do that today.
