I am listening to the message in this video and getting it into my spirit. Every now and then, pure unadulterated, sincere, basic down to earth advice is given by a sincere, down to earth wonderful human being and good man. This video is testament into the character of Bruce Springsteen. I will be taking this video to heart. Thank you for posting it. Ti Amo, Ti Amo, Ti Amo
thank you for posting this... I was there at Carnegie Hall that night...damn I'm covered in goosebumps...Yep I saw and met Harry several times.... he'd always come out after the shows to sign copies of his book with proceeds of all sales going to World Hunger Year.. great man, great music....and what a tribute to have Bruce tell that story and inspire others to keep pressing on in his honor and memory... Yes Harry we do sorely missyou :( the world's not the same without you in it.
Thanks for posting this! I have listened to a cassette copy of this benefit for the past 20 years but this is the first time I have seen the video. This may be the most beautiful tribute I have ever heard! All the more amazing when you realize that Bruce isn't reading from a script.
The "shared vision and purpose" comment is dead on! I hope musicians realize the power music has to pull us all together. Bruce's music continues to be a source of tremendous inspiration for me.
My biggest regret in life is that I got an invitation to attend this event due to being a charter member of CHAPINFO, the newsletter for Chapin fans at the time of his death. I couldn't make it, for a reason long forgotten. Now I think back and kick myself for missing the tribute concert. Damn, but I miss Harry.
Thanks so much for this and thank you Bruce for those words. Thank you Harry for trying to make this world better in the brief time you had. Nice to see Jen in the beginning of the vid. I'm sure your dad is proud of you.
"and when that promise slipped through our hands we didn't replace it with nothing but lost faith..." - only Bruce can find words like that!! - Thank you so much for posting!!!
Listen to Harry. One for you and you're still a wealthy man. One for the other guy... and you can change the world... even if it's just for one other guy.
You talk about the promise. But YOU have to keep it.
Bruce has raised LOTS of money and donated LOTS of concert proceeds. He's helped dozens of grassroots groups across the country and encouraged his fans to do the same -- just as Harry did. World Hunger Year, which was founded by Harry, has received millions of dollars over the years as a direct result of Bruce's quiet but sustained generosity and commitment. He's "done something" and continues to do so.
I agree totally. Back in 1985, when Bruce came to Toronto on a tour stop, he had visited our city's food bank and donated $25,000. No photo-op, no fanfare. The news was made public by the food bank's director, who wanted to acknowledge Bruce's sizeable donation. I've been to several of his concerts through the years, and at each venue he has made requests for donations by his fans to the local food banks. No doubt he has donated to many such charities thoughout the years, unnoticed.
I first met Harry when he played at Smithtown High School West on Long Island, 1976. I was 17 and he took the time to talk to me about commitment to a cause. I miss him dearly as does the rest of the world. This is a performance that brings tears to me, and I am not ashamed to admit that.
one of the best songs every written but you have to hear the reprise by harry because that still gives me the chills even after listening to it 50000000 times
Every band in every town playing every genre should put Harry's lyrics and Bruce's speech on a piece of paper and tack it to the wall of their rehearsal room.
This is now my favorite Bruce video on YouTube. I've listened to the audio of this hundreds of times. It's nice to finally see the video. Thanks so much for posting this.
Even Bruce Springsteen loved Harry Chapin. That is a beautiful thing. It's tragic that Harry died so young, but he will never ever be forgotten. This was a deeply moving video.
Awesome, just awesome. Great lyrics and speech. I think I've been a fan for 25 years and it still amazes me how you can feel that he really sings out his soul, still gives me goosebumps
Thank you, Boss.

I thought it might have been because of his politics, but yeah, I just went to a Lou Reed concert and there was plenty of "booing".

Is that booing at the end? What a bunch of pricks.

They're not booing,they're saying BRUUUUUUUCE!!!
