  • nice one dude. ^_^

  • Great tutorial! Learned a lot.

  • I think these kind a videos are more important to people like me (beginners with SLRs) than even reviewing the lenses.

    good vid!

  • nice...thanks for this tutorial, I just I bought a nikon d7000 and this settings go in one of my U1 or U2. I will enjoy if you made one for landscape, Thanks!!!!

  • About 4 months ago I bought a D300s and just started shooting. No CLUE what I'm doing...but coming up with some decent shots. I love to shoot jazz musicians.Any tips for shooting in dark, smoky jazz clubs where I have to use existing light or my SB900 and try not to be to annoying to the rest of the audience? BTW...love Freddie Freeloader :-)

  • • Use a fast prime or zoom lens (ƒ/2.8 or faster) and stop it down by a stop for better sharpness.

    • Never use a flash in dark conditions that are lit by colored lights (like at concerts or nightclubs) because the flash will only ruin the beautiful ambient colors.

    • You might will need to crank the ISO up high to get shutter speeds that are faster than the lens' focal length. For example, 50mm ƒ/1.4, use shutter speeds faster than 1/50s such as 1/60s or faster.

    • Have fun!

  • @Lilkiwiguy87

    Thank you soooo much!!

  • Can someone please tell me how to set the RAW files to Uncompressed on a D90...

  • Sorry, you cannot because D90 does not have RAW compression control; it is fixed at Lossless Compression.

  • This slows down the FPS on the D3s ! Why is that ?

  • It slows down the frame rate speed because of AF-C Priority Selection is set for Focus (only) where the camera needs time to get the subject in focus between shots. If frame rate speed is important, you can use Release (only) or Focus + Release. However, expect some out of focus shots because in Release, the camera will trigger, no matter what if the subject is in focus or not. In Release + Focus, the camera checks focus 50% of the time and trigger 50% of the time.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thank you very much

  • How many focus points do you recommend for photographing soccer? 9? 21?

  • Use Single Point AF because there are too many subjects (players) within the main subject (whoever has the ball). If you are shooting from the sidelines with a super telephoto lens (300mm or longer), use 9 Points Dynamic Area AF.

  • very useful! Thanks a lot

  • can u teach me how to use d300s? u got any tutorial video about tht..

im canon user before, and nikon settng is differnt.. im a beginner

    would u helping me?..

  • No, we do not teach people how to use different cameras. This channel have videos that are universal and could be used on any cameras. So, please read and finish your user's manual from page 1. Good luck.

  • Tks for taking the time to upoad your videos, having the transition from FE to D700 has been a steep learning curve, your instructions and explanation of each step has made the change very easy to follow,

    Much appreciated

    Regards,

    Gary

  • Great video very helpful. Most of the settings you set i had done already but there were a few i did change. Cant wait to test it out to see if there is a difference.

  • very useful! Thank You!

  • Yeah cheers bud :) lots & lots to learn here, great series of vids...thanks... :)

  • Yeah interesting stuff :) Just bought a D90 but some of the principles are similar. Do you have any vids specifically for the D90 as I'm an absolute beginner :(

  • Okay, I suggest you to watch a video series, "Nikon Autofocus Tutorial" (three videos) to learn more about your D90's autofocus capabilities. Then come back here to copy similar settings. Just ignore any menu options that is not available on your D90.

  • I'm not sure what it is, but I followed this to the T and tried shooting 2 of my dogs running around in the park and the tracking wasn't that great.

I really gotta learn how to do action shots, practice makes perfect I guess...it's frustrating as hell though. Using a D300 btw. :\

  • Well, what could you do? Oh, that's right, practice.

Try with these settings: 1) use AF-S lenses 2) set for AF-Continuous Servo AF 3) set Focus Tracking with Lock-On for Off 4) set AF-C Priority Selection for Focus Only, 5) set for 9-Points AF Area, 6) set for Dynamic Area AF.

Those are the ultimate settings for action.

  • I have a perplexity. It seems me that using Auto-aera AF the Tracking-3d setting is useless. The Tracking-3d works only with Dynamic area AF. Or am I wrong?

  • Yes, we left that information in the video description, reporting this error a while ago. Use Dynamic Area AF.

  • excellent tutorial for hi-end cameras! but for my D60 its useless! i don't have even half of functions that you have!

  • You need to watch the video again, it states clearly right there "D3, D300, and D700 only".

  • excellent and ya bloody kiwi amazinc

  • You seriously rock. Excellent well put together videos.

I've been trying to figure out the D300's focus command for so long, and you've demystified it within 10minutes. thnq!

  • thanks thanks!!! awesome video!!! really helpful stuff! don't have the patience to read all that on the manual.

  • Tsk Tsk, you're supposed to be reading the manual before you buy a new camera.

  • hence you're here doing this for the lazy ones like me...hehe

  • what a great video thx a lot for u

  • why focus priority if AF-C mode? it slows it down sooooo much. why not focus+release?

  • If you set for Focus, the camera will get everything in focus. Focus + Release, the camera gives it 50% chance to focus to allow release. Release, the camera will not always focus before you release.

    This is D3 / D700 / D300, they don't have a problem with that when using AF-S lens.
