  • Belle musique. I think that remembers música brasileira, em especial a música mineira. Questo mostra come la musica è ogni volta piu universale.

  • What a Great song!!!!!

  • this song needs more cowbell

  • We're playing the bob curnow arrangement of this in my highschool jazz band I love it.

  • Piano emoçion!!!

  • beaucoup d'affinités avec ce titre moi avoir toujours eu!et encore moi aujourd'hui en avoir aprés toutes ces années! Et à partir de la 4e minute et 36 secondes! Wowww!!!Come on Lyle!

  • Heh.... Transcends words.

  • Twenty two eighth notes is so hard to clap out.

  • DUE GENI.

  • My 2 beautiful daughters (Rebecca and Cassidy) were born to this song one year ago to today at 4:24am and 4:25am...thanks Pat for the incredible and wonderful song that I will remember forever....

  • @metalcorefanzine how were they born to this song?

  • @metalcorefanzine ~ Happy belated birthday to them both :) I can't imagine a better way to enter the world!!!

  • @metalcorefanzine Please don't worry if the girls seem to hate Metheny's music when they're teenagers. ;)

I heard nothing but classical music in utero and all my life until I left home at 18, and despised it.

Only when I was 21 did it begin to feature in a positive light!

  • I saw the first Pat Metheny Group concert at a club in NYC called axis in Soho. . I met Pat methent last year in Morristown and he said they were nervous and almost did play San Lorenzo. They were incredible with Egan on Bass and Gotlieb on drums I was fortunate to see the full Cirvle tour also in Poerland Oregon. Full Circle is one of mt favorite compositions. These singers are great but the original singer from Argentina was the best.

  • I am so awed, and have been by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays since I first heard Phase Dance in 1979! There compositions are BLISS!

  • Lyle is a great piano player.

  • a monster of a tune, a monster of a group ... and a monster keyboard player ... Lyle Mays. i always loved this tune, especially Lyle Mays' solo on the cd recording. it was nice to see him tickling the ivories on this video. BRAVO!!!

  • This tune, to me, is the ulitimate Pat Metheny. I can never get tired of listening it. It is so amazing. Can you imagine yourself soaring through the blue skies? This is absolutely beautiful!!

  • Just superb

  • im only 14 and ever since i was a baby i always loved this kind of music!!!!!!

  • The best song ever written, without a doubt. And performed masterfully by amazing musicians. Lyle Mays' piano is always hauntingly beautiful. I want to stand up and cheer!

  • A Classic song for the ages.Soulfull Mind Music for sure.......

  • This song drives me so high..... love this. Especially Lyle's piano solo to ending, that's amazingly fantastic. Magic!

  • Favorite song of all time. Not even a close 2nd

  • 2 people can't keep up. =]

  • Perfection .. no other word sums it up

So enjoyable to listen to and such miraculus musicianship.

  • lyle may solo

    omg

  • god, what a great ending. the whole thing is awesome. who the hell thinks to write a tune in 22/8?? go pat!

  • @damayer92 he didn't think, he just did.

  • @damayer92 I've been trying to get the meter all weekend long.

  • 11/8 all the way...

  • @keselekes count again... it's 22/8

  • @stickfiguregum

    or just alternating 5/4 6/4.

  • @papercowmoo Metheny has said in interviews that he thinks of it as one measure comprising of 12/8 in 5 and 10/8, making one large grouping of 22/8. I've played a big band chart of this, and it was written in 22/8. In the Metheny songbook, the piece is written in 22/8. On wikipedia, it's described as a unique piece in 22/8. If thinking about it in larger beats with an occasional offbeat emphasis helps you, stick with that. But it really is in 22/8.

  • @stickfiguregum

I think I found what the conflict is. Our music for this piece was written in 6/4 5/4 because it was a marching arrangement so it was given to us like that to make it clear for the drum major and make it easier to have sets written for us. so yeah for a big band chart 22/8 is probably what the original was in and it got changed to 6/4 5/4 for us so it has smaller sets for us to do direction changes and whatnot.

  • @papercowmoo ah. That makes sense. I do know other people who think of it that way, so it's not unreasonable. But to me, it just makes more sense to think of it in 22/8. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, as they say.

  • @keselekes I knew I would find a comment with the time signature. 11/8? That's wild. Thanks

  • @tcbalz8605

its actually written in alternating 5/4 6/4

  • its totaly incredible they follow with claps and at the right time

we love you all pat keep on boy

  • its totaly incredible they follow with claps and at the right time

  • 123-12-123-12-12-123-123-12-12

    22 eights baby

  • @goshaix4

I think the music is written with alternating measures of 12/8 and 10/8

  • @Albatross420 Bingo!

"But, on the other hand, you know, 'First Circle' does have a little different kind of time signature. We called it 22/8.... You could think of it as a bar of 12 and a bar of 10." - Lyle Mays

  • @goshaix4 12/8 then 10/8 dissected this for my jazz band class today.

  • Love it, love Him.

  • non sono le amni di lyle a suonare sono i tasti che chiamano le sue dita

  • The greatest masterpiece of modern music written in the last 50 years.

  • It's just beautiful, the real music. First heard it in a friend's place and I was amazed~~love it.

  • more classical music .. delighted to pass this on to the future generation

  • what a talent and melody.... awesome.....

  • Fabulous Lyle-Metheny group!

  • incredible Pat-Mays group!

  • I'm going with you !

  • amazing.

  • Spine tinging... have played this endlessly. Thanks so much for posting. Metheny is superb.

  • Wow Lyle, best solo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just love this piano solo... Lyle Mays is the ultimate jazz pianist!

  • @ollieadlingtonstokes

check out McCoy Tyner! :O lol

    love Lyle Mars too!

  • Most awesome song I have ever heard. :)

  • Ditto, jcarlosco, RIP Mark Ledford, he knew how to bring it, both on the horns and espcially with his voice. What a gift to all of us.

  • Ditto, jcarlosco, RIP Mark Ledford, he knew how to bring it.

  • 22/8

  • it's amazing that the crowd (who failed at trying to join in on the claps) didn't mess them up

  • Takes the top of my head off!!

  • Is this in 5/4 or 3/4?

  • @MarshallEFarris

It is in alternating 5/8, 7/8, and 10/8. Love it.

  • @MarshallEFarris 12/8 and 10/8...insane right?

  • Ei-lo. Pat Metheny Group em grande momento... Sensacional!

  • this is great waw goosebumps !!!!

  • PMG HEALS.......

This music could help save our planet.. It speaks to man's truest nature...LOVE AND COMPASSION

  • R.I.P. mark ledford

  • This group is a national treasure.

  • I agree with JCG90. One of the most beautiful, exciting pieces of music I've ever heard. I'm a big Metheny fan and out of all his tunes, even the ones where he's BURNIN' , this is my favorite. The hair on my arms stands up from beginning to end.

  • 3+2+3+2+2 | 3+3+2+2 Wouldn't think that would make any sense, but it sure flows nice.

  • @drumsfun haha thx for sharing that.. I struggle with complex time signatures.. I played this song for my dad, my dad having introduced me to Pat many moons ago, due to my exploration of my Pop's records and cassette tapes... my Dad figured the time signature out lol.. he having a solid understanding of music from his youth.. great, great stuff: First Circle.. I named one of my fantasy football sqauds,"First Circle" last year, and it took 1st of 12 teams!! Viva Pat Metheny Group!

  • Epic is an understatement. This song is best heard live in concert. Amazing, classy and classic.

  • pure joy this

  • woah! look how skinny paul is!

  • que gran equipo era ese..........maestros

  • i was listening to this song in guitar class and i thought it was amazing

  • our winter pecussion group just got done with a season with this exact piece

  • Genius at work

  • Fantastico!

  • Sorcery!

  • Now that's some good live music. I know there are a lot of good artist but this is just amazing. The grammy awards show could use more of this and less of what they normally show. This is serious music. Seriously good.

  • incredible!

  • How many people think Mike Patton would fit in well as a vocalist, so long as he were to behave himself? ;) Bad idea? haha

  • Masterpiece!

  • Saw them at Meadowbrokk Music Festival when the CD came out. One the best things I've ever seen in my life. Metheny and Mays are a brilliant combination

  • Makes you want to live life. Amazing group.

  • @bruceg1412 Agreed.

  • the piano player creeps me out

  • he rocks

  • @Antw0n23 He's just really focused. He's also very good at math, from what I hear. Makes sense.

  • cool music

  • Perhaps one of the best LIVE performances of REAL musicians that I have ever witnessed. Amazing musicianship throughout each section.

(this is one of TWO postings of this video that I have seen, btw)

The more Metheny we have around the internet, the better off the world would be. :)

    Thanks!

  • @MarineBugler agree!

  • Absolutely wonderful piano solo

  • David and Mark took the ending vocals to a whole higher level. Listen closely took Mark Leford vocals. He took it there. Masterpiece!!

  • No me canso de escuchar a Pat, pueden pasar años, ojala exista toda la vida.

    pasen mas canciones de el.

  • will never get tired of this!!

  • Wow never heard such a Big Band playing so well toghether

Im really new to Pat Matheny ( I just know 3 Songs ) but i allready like it a lot

  • Takes me back 25 years - love this!!!!! Thanks so much for posting this - pure musical brilliance.

  • absolutely genius!

  • i had chills throughout the entire song. That's how beautiful it is. i love it.

  • Lyle ; you make this earth so beautiful !!!

Thank you , greetings George from Holland

  • パットかっこいーーー(><)

    最高!

  • That part in Lyle's solo at 6:14 makes my heart jump every time. Beautiful.

  • The most epic piece of music ever written, hands down. For some reason i never cry when listening to music, but if i would, i would drown in my own tears because of the beauty of this piece.

Love you, Pat. I'm going with you!

  • @JCG90 True...

  • @JCG90 Absolutely epic. Great comment. I whole-heartedly agree.

  • @JCG90 the bar isn't set high, but that's the best youtube comment ever. I honestly can't think of anyone else who can write such exciting music and still bring out tears. This song brings literal meaning to words like breathtaking and stunning.

  • @JCG90 When I saw this live a few years ago, I bawled like a baby at the end... Never happened before, or since...

  • wtf lyle may solo

    damn beautiful

  • wtf lyle may solo

    damn beautiful

  • True genius, and the whole band played impeccably!

  • this song is so beautiful!

  • love it so much

  • É assim...de guardar na alma!

  • Do you have the timbale solo Armando does at this concert? What song is it on?

This is Metheny's best line up...

    Thank you...

  • Sensacional !!! Quase chorei assistindo ! è pra quem curte.

  • besides the switch between 12/8 and 10/8, it also uses 12/8 and 8/8 for a sort of half time and double time feel. i really like those parts.....along with the whole thing!!

  • If you change just one note you lower the quality. it's perfect

  • its actually a 12/8 and 10/8 and it alternates through the whole song except for a few instances. as for the counting its going to be

    |123 12 123 12 12|123 123 12 12| then it repeats

  • How I missed Pedro Aznar voice....great song!!

  • Is Pedro dead ?

  • WOW!

  • Lyle may's solo is AWESOME

with that kind of odd meter thru solo form..

HOW CAN U DEVELOP THOSE F*cking good solo

  • ...miss Paul Wertico

  • Is Paul ill ? or worst ?

  • The group is made for live effort! Thank God I got to play with Pat in Boston.....just a trio....guitar, bass, and me!

  • the show I saw in Clearwater, Fl bk in 1997 I think, well the craowd gave PMG THREE standing Os! Two DURING the song!

  • This is one of those bands that will not be done justice to if someone judges them by their recordings. To anyone that hasn't seen them live and is blown away by their recorded songs, yes: they really are that good.

  • Why is it that no matter how many times that I listen to this or the recorded version for that matter, it never grows old?? AMAZING STUFF!!!

  • I will never learn how to clap in that time :(

  • its not easy, but its easier than clapping it against everything else ;)

  • Èach clap falls in between a pattern on a 11/8 tempo (listen to the guitar notes at the very beginning).

    The pattern is: I I I I I I I I I (1 2 3 1 2)

The claps are all in between the guitar notes.

Fill the spaces with one clap in the short pauses and two claps in the long ones. The result will be:

    CC C CC C C CC CC C C

Try it: it's easier than it sounds :-)

  • Thanks for letting me know! I'll program the loop and try to play the guitar over it...

  • Thank you Rbksmn... I have been trying to figure that out forever and after reading your comment I had it in like 2 seconds... you are awesome!

  • Glad to be helpful :-)

  • I love this tune and I've heard several versions on UTube alone - I just wish the clip would extend another 10 or 15 seconds cos I'm sure the audience just goes off - my own applause in front of the PC just isn't enough.

  • this is a journey as much as it is a song. i can't listen to it without smiling. after all these years it is still fresh. timeless music.

  • OMG - the set! That took awhile to put together. This is the best version I've heard of this song. Nihon-jins went crazy at the end over this - no doubt!

  • I've seen Pat live 3 times with Lyle in late 80's, Pat is a brilliant guitar musician and Lyle is a brilliant pianist, this version is really good as well. Astonishing performance! Those two guys singing are also amazing!

  • still cant get over how good this is, and i wouldnt be surprised if ive listened to this 100 times.

  • booyahhh!!! nothin' else like it. long live pat metheny!!!

  • Lyle may be an ugly son of a bitch!!, but he will surely blow your mind with his beautifull music!!! ( hey, dont be so serious about this, I Respect them a lot )

  • Qu'est ce que c'est bon, Putin!

  • Also a great add for Northwestern Univ and North Texas!

  • 9 minuti di orgasmo!!!! grande Pat!!!!

  • THanks Brian mcauliffe of cape Cod for gettin me into the Pat Metheny Group. Ive been a fan 20 years. awesome.

  • talk about beiing totally focused for 8 minutes straight.

    amazing

  • i saw this tour in chile...amazing!

  • pedro aznar voice is icomparable

  • i don't know how pat does it. if i had mark and david beltin' that stuff out behind me, i don't think i'd be able to play. is it just me or does pat seem more "inspired" when those two are his vocalists?

  • The concert group that I am in in my school is doing a revamped version of this song [I play guitar].

  • Break a leg! Let us know how it goes.

  • this is wonderful footage... what's it from a dvd?

  • Se extraña la voz de Aznar aun cuando Blamires no lo haga mal; Wertico es un extraordinario baterista, sucesor de otro grande como Danny Gottlieb, por lo demas para cuando un video de San Lorenzo o Travels?

  • I saw this tour at the Royal Festival Hall, 1995, in London, UK. It was great. Thanks for posting.

  • The vocal arrangements make this track truly superb!

  • It's Paul Wertico, not Vertico.

  • q hermoso tema

    se extraña a pedro.

  • I can't sing worth a damm, but for some reason I know all the words and can stay in tune with these guys.

  • Me too - I think it's because this music is inside all of us - Metheny knows how to bring it out so we can experience it.

    SEEK BEAUTY

  • That's so true. I don't think there's anybody that can say that they don't like this.

  • While Pat Metheny's music is always alive when I play it, seeing him performing makes it come top life in another very special way! What an awesome, accessible composer and performer!

  • paul is the most intense drummer i've ever seen. he's not human!

  • yes. love wertico's stuff...just cant dig the pmg stuff the same anymore w/o him percussing his brains out driving it forward. why pm sacked him ill never understand

  • Holy crap loo
