  • I just noticed that this is the first time Vera mentions her late husband without saying "He was an engine driver, you know."!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz It's the second time. In "Lucky Strike", she mentions him and Ethel says "He was an engine driver you know" for her, but it turns out she was going to say something else.

  • @verkaforever Well, the first time she mentions him without that being said afterwards!

  • Ethel is bloody bonkers. The most kind thing to do, would be to take her outside and shoot her. Wilfred next and then we may be close to the real world.

  • @MrCagivaman Ethel behaves bonkers in this episode, but she is not a bad person. And Wilfred was- as Ethel kept saying in the series- a lot brighter than he came across. And he seemed a really decent person.

  • I notice in this episode Vera forgot to say "He was an engine driver, you know." when she mentioned her husband!

  • "It turned me into a mean, lean fighting machine!"

    "So what went wrong then?"

  • I just noticed this is the first time we hear any of the characters speaking before the theme tune has finished!

  • Ethel is a pain in this episode. Her boyfriend seems a bit of a wimp- don't know how he ever got in the army!

  • @verkaforever I think he's an airman actually.

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Don't know how he ever got in the RAF then.

  • @verkaforever It'd be the US Air Force, not the RAF!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Sorry, I got muddled up. Anyway, I don't know how he got into the US Air Force. This isn't my favourite episode overall- this and "Lucky Strike" are probably my least favourites. I don't think I've ever asked you your favourite episode- sorry if I have. Mine is "Job Opportunity".

  • @verkaforever No, you haven't - I'm not sure if I have a 'favourite' episode as such, but I think 'A Bowl In The Hand' is probably the one I remember best from when the series was originally aired.

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz I can see why. That is one of my favourite episode. I love the part where Ethel's trying to serve the soup!

  • @verkaforever It's so funny when Mr Parkin tells May about the dream he's had of them travelling together on the Orient Express and how it's all coming true, then she simply says "We're going on the bowls club outing to Nether Padley!"! Quite a contrast!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Yeah. I love that part as well. Also love the part where Harry imitates Mr. Parkin's reaction to the idea of going by charabanc.

  • @verkaforever Mind you, I'd have to agree with Parkin - a railwaymen's outing really should be by train!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Definitely.

  • @verkaforever I'd say that's probably one of the three funniest moments in the whole series - the other two being when she gets the announcement mixed up and the confusion when they stop the train for the turkey!

  • @verkaforever At least he does appear to be more her sort of age than Percy!

  • @verkaforever We recently had a question in a pub quiz that said 'At the outbreak of WWI, the US Air Force consisted of how many men?' and we could have it to the nearest 100. Thinking it might be a trick question, we put 0 - the answer was 50, so we got the point!

  • "Don't be daft - Ethel doesn't drink!"

What about the brandy that May gave her in 'Father's Day'?

  • "Don't cut it so short this time - I'm not in the army now, you know!"

  • Wilfred only had his hair cut in the previous episode!

  • "What are you planning to do while I'm standing there in your kitchen half naked?"

"Well, I'm sure I'll think of something!"

  • Harry really shouldn't be a signalman with his attitude!

  • "I'll just go and check if the track is still there"

    CLASSIC!

  • @BenAdams1983 People have in fact been known to steal track from railway lines - albeit disused ones!

  • I wouldn't like to have been in the cafe when Ethel and her fancy man were behaving like a pair of kids- UGH!

  • Great series!

Is anyone else just crazy about Paul Aspen. He's right dreamy!

  • @johnsongbird I am

  • @johnsongbird Little wonder with Ethel being such a scatterbrain!
