its smells like diesel fuel because thats really what jet-A is, a refined diesel fuel. I used to run our diesel fuel trucks at the airport I worked at with jet-A fuel. its the same as Diesel.

Engines are TF-33's same as used on the 141 NOT the ones the 135 came with. In essense this is a 707-320 highly modified. The 135 is actually a 717. The Saudi's have E-3's with CFM56's

the reason why this jet has an awful exuast fume, and is very loud then the other jets, like the KC-135 airbourne refueler that's there as well, it's because the engines of the E-3 are very very very old, from when the plane was first made, they never refitted it with new engines like they did with the KC-135's

@jojosambre Yeah. To put in perspective, the JT3D turbofan was developed in the late-fifties. :-) Most of the USAF fleet is like this. C-5As and Bs have been powered by the General Electric TF39, which was first run in 1964.

actually its because its a DIFF engine and a DIFF stage of jet engines. it has noting to do with the age of the engine. And don't use kc135's in plural like that, it would mean you are saying all were refitted....and they weren't

I was Flight Engineer on the E-3 for 10 years...........the engines are completely different than the original KC-135....the KC 135 has a turbojet.....this E-3 has turbofans
