People like this piss me off. I'm not allowed pets in my building because of these people. I take good care apartment, it is always clean and neat. I ALWAYS clean up after pets. Because of these people I cannot have a pet.

Insurance companys charge extra in home owners premiums if a dog will live at a property.....so in most states landlords have the right to forbid pets of any kind. As a landlord myself.....if you want to have animals, then you need to go buy a house of your own. Not ALL pet owners are like that. Maybe next time you rent to someone with pets, maybe you can ask to do periodic inspections to be sure the animals and your property are being properly cared for. Sky-high deposits and no-pets policies aren't the solution. just makes you look like a greedy douche.

My landlord let me have my cat without paying his usual pet fee- now I find it's likely because he wanted to be able to blame any problems on my cat and try to keep my deposit. Some awful tenants broke the front door and the LL never fixed it. When stray cats came in the building and sprayed all over the hallway, guess whose cat got the blame? Some LLs are shit, some tenants are shit, it happens on both sides.
In America, the owner has the right to inspect the unit with 24 hours notice.

That is a very good point. While the tenant was negligent and clearly wrong, you should have kept a closer eye on the place. Instead of jacking up deposits or instituting no-pets policies, maybe try random inspections a couple of times a year until you're confident the tenant is taking care of the place. And if they aren't, you can get rid of them before any significant damage is done. There's more to being a landlord than sitting back collecting rent money.
Its hard to find a place that allows pets cause of people like this. We are responsible pet owners but I do understand the fear that landlords have. Usually the only places that let you rent with pets already have yucky carpets from the other renters.
In Ontario, Canada, it's illegal to refuse to rent to someone with pets. Pets are part and parcel of family. There are basically no bad pets; just bad owners. It's the irresponsible owners that ruin it for everyone else. This type of renter is liable to give the Landlord problems in other areas, so checking and double checking before renting is the order of the day.

I now pay just over a thousand in rent alone PLUS my own utilities and 500 for one of my dogs and an addition 250 for my second. Please, don't bundle all pet owners into this category - I take good care of my animals and I clean up after them. If you have qualms about letting pets into your property, request to see vet bills, vaccinations, etc. Most likely if they don't clean up after them, they don't care for their health either. If you have an up to date vet check, you most likely have a responsible owner.
