When my grandchildren ask "grandpa, what's this?" I'll need to explain to them that there once was a time when rock music didn't mean quirky cute songs devoted to the singer's pet fish and played with a ukelele... no grandchild. There was a time when it meant you didn't leave the stage without tearing it to shreds first. But that was long long ago, and we'll probably never see the likes of it again.
Check out my garage/rock band from sweden, The Soulmovers with a lot of insperation from the Mc5. You can find us on Facebook and youtube if you go to my page! Thanx! spread the word!
No fucking around-------The 5 were the shit--------the (mostly) brainless youth of today have no clue as to what REAL music is all about. Packaged, profit margin bullshit is not where it's at!
@JDroid i'm 15 man and thought you might like to know I fuckin' believe in what you said man. i can't take all this corporate bs anymore. haha, that's why i'm in a grunge band.
The crowd is so far behind the concept of this music, stunned is probably the apt description. No band stuns anymore, maybe we have played all the chords there are since its mostly sissy pop, mass corp sell to the masses garbage. Not to say there isnt some decent stuff out there, its just that the airwaves are SO jammed with shit you caint find your way home
Re: the crowd...this was also at a time when people were there to appreciate the music, to internalize it, and to be in their own headspace, not like today, where people are more concerned with acting up, acting out, and acting like an asshole in public. Despite their amazing energy, MC5 were also a very "cerebral" band...I'm sure a lot of those folks were on strange little trips to inner space. "Black to Comm" must have simply blown minds, lol.
All right, I'll agree with that. They were pioneers for sure, people didn't quite know how to interpret that kind of energy. It takes a little while to knock the squareness loose!

Less emo and more rock!
Not only are they MC5 awesome but who ever was on the cameras and the editing was equaly incredible. This video is 1970 and black and white. Ican't see it enough!
rob tyner...joe cocker... they should have switched bands for a night and really done a shocker...you don't dance to this you gaze in amazement and dance to the car afterwards
@grizz22604 i'm very happy watching this video.i'm 56and had a stroke recently and am in poor shape but making a comeback! this was my heyday in high school 68-72.makes me happy to relive my youth here on youtube and the comments from young people makes me feel so great i cry tears of joy though.
@AntipodeanAl I was joking of course. Yes there was plenty of dancing going on before the 60s and in the early 60s too. But white folks did seem to loose there mojo for a bit in the late 60s. I've seen so many classic gigs like this from that era where people are just sitting there not moving. And no I'm not black.
@AntipodeanAl It was the 60s, white folk hadn't learned how to dance yet. They where used to sitting cross legged watching some dude with an acoustic guitar. They probably didn't know what to make of this.
"...Looked hard into the dancing crowd, felt like screaming out loud, I saw you standing in there, I saw your long, saw your long hair.." mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yeeeeeeeeahhhhhhhh!! :D <3
why isn't this band in the r&r hall of fame? whoever posted everyone else followed got it spot on. great posting of a slamming song. wayne kramer and fred sonic smith - best two guitar assault ever!
the move at 3:33 is the MOTHER of guitarist's dips in Rock History, you could not do this COOLER than what you witness here! The Motor City 5, everyone else, followed.
the sound of Fred Sonics Ricky with the humbuckers belting it out after the break down and Wayne's Dan Armstrong... best 2 chord song. what a rush still after all these years.
“It’s a great document of the band, it’s a great document of life, and it’s a great document of things ... far and beyond the band.” - Jackson Smith, Detroit-based musician son of Fred & Patti Smith
"Music so extraordinary that it transformed the lives of all who experienced it demands the release of a documentary that does the MC5 justice." - Don McLeese, author of Kick Out The Jams (Continuum 33 1/3 series)
@georgeneuman Hehe...I love to see this. It never gets old. ♥ Very fuckin awesome indeed. ........makes me wish I was 15 again.......just to hear them for the first time again. Gawd that was stunning. Somethin I can tell the Grand-kids.....if Im ever blessed with any.
i was at this show, it was free and featured savage grace, alice cooper, the 5 and commander cody and the lost planet airmen. the comments on this are funny so let me tell you, we were sick of having bob seeger play at our high school dances - someone said that "if you look at the old movies, no one new how to take this" well i just want to say, if you see them sittin' it was because they was trippin' this was just regular neighborhood stuff
Anyway, Kramer & Sonic were arguably one of the best guitar-partners in rock history. Their styles complemented each other in such a ... sweet...not-so-sophisticated..powerful...trippy.. way ...man

@MagicDolphinGO That's right it's only two chords and it still rocks harder than anything you and your dumb little buddies "rock out" to! I guarantee whatever shit bands you listen to were influenced by the MC5, look it up! You can't be a rock n roll fan and not respect the Stooges and the MC5, that's common knowledge. I swear this country is going to shit lol, just turn on the radio!
I remember I saw these guys play in a stubbly hay field out in the country near Ypsilanti. I think it was 1969. It was a benefit concert to get legal defense funds for John Sinclair. The band was great, as usual, but the location was miserable. Wayne Kramer was more manic than usual that day, and I saw him make a move that was almost identical to the move that Michael Jackson, years later, named the Moon Walk. Very original, short eyes.
Anyway, it was a great time to be a delinquent in Detroit.
ha, yeah. these morons need to realize that their bullshit ideas of "punk" all stem from political hippies. and still is. hippies own you!. eat the weeds from the sidewalk fucks.
Kind of see what they were not the huge success they could of been, like to the next level. They were too way radical for the masses, unlike Grand Funk RR who appealed to a lot more people.
Never the less MC5 rocked out like nobody's business.
@freezerkid1 - yep! then spraying the crowd at 3:45- this vid should be mandatory viewing for upstart musicians, see now, this is how its done, this is rock n roll, this is THE MC5.
i had a tune stuck in my head for like a year and thought it was so simplistic and genius at the same time. But low and behold it's looking at you by the mc5 dam these guys are awesome.
@mgmads ya don't have to be a dancing fool to enjoy the music, besides if you were on acid or anything else you were immersed into the music .you didn't have to put on a public display to enjoy the moment.
How the eff is the crowd just STANDING there?!?! I can't even watch this clip without bursting out of my seat and jumping around!

First - the 5 were unlike anything most had ever seen before. The first time I saw them I pretty much stood there in a trance.
Secondly - I'm guessing more than a few in the crowd were stoned.

This is not a band...this is a force of nature. God Damn this is so good.

Kind of see what they were not the huge success they could of been, like to the next level. They were too way radical for the masses, unlike Grand Funk RR who appealed to a lot more people.
Never the less MC5 rocked out like nobody's business.

The move that Wayne Kramer makes at 3:33 is unsurpassed by anybody.

@freezerkid1 Sorry, but you're wrong it's surpassed by Wayne Kramer doing "Ramblin' Rose" a few minutes before at the same show.

@mgmads ya don't have to be a dancing fool to enjoy the music, besides if you were on acid or anything else you were immersed into the music .you didn't have to put on a public display to enjoy the moment.
