@pistolpete111 so true, my god, this team went 58-11, 60-8, 59-10, 52-17, 4 cups, 2 sweeps, swept a 2 time winner, lost 1 game at home in 76-77, just was like a giant, when they scored first, i said, 'games' over'...
It took Guy Lafleur 4 years (1972-1975), to have his first 50 goal season (53), and his first 100pts (119). His totals just simply skyrocketed that year, and what followed next was 5 more seasons of 50+goals and 5 more 100+ pt seasons. lt was that bloody helmet he had that was his downfall, because once he took it off during 1974/75, "The Flower" came to life in Montreal.
@CrazyHorseRunningBat sounds like a trailer park deadmonton oiler fan to me.......the flower had a better shot then both the great one and mario and was a better skater too. Mario, I admit was the BEST....made everything look easy, sick stickhandler. Gretzky was....gretzky, made hockey cool again in the 1980-90's. Great to have been alive to see all three.
check out the heart he put into his game when he played. can be unstoppable when he wants example check at 2:53 on this video ;) insane skill you could compare to any top player today and he was an old fart doing that :P
@BillieBobSmith How fuckin stupid can you be to come on the video of one of the best & most popular hockey player ever just to call him a fag...Get a fuckin life you stupid fuck..This guy did more in 1 day than you will ever do in your life you insignificant lowlife..People like you dont deserve the internet because you dont deserve that anyone sees or listens to you. Go do bungee without a rope you useless fool..
@CrazyHorseRunningBat You're pathetic..Guy Lafleur was not slow you idiot he was one of, if not the fastest of his time & is amongst the best ever in the sport. He was smoking a cigarette between periods & still manage to outskate & outplay anyone on the ice. The NHL was not what it is now but it was the same for everyone back then & he was owning everyone. Nobody here denies that Wayne was the best ever, but why hate on another great one? If you love hockey you would never say this shit..
@CrazyHorseRunningBat Oh and all i see from the comments that you posted in the past few weeks is just a bunch of stupid hateful comments..Why dont you find a job or something worthwhile to do with your time instead of looking like a loser & hating on everything that your little brain can`t understand?
He. is. AMAZING. I wish I was born earlier so that I could've seen him play :< I mean I LOOOOOVE Canadians right now, but there are just some legends who can't be replaced (:
@hardy502 Gonna be there Sunday? Flyers 2010, greateast comeback of all time! down 3-0 fight back to a 7th game, only to be down 3 to nothing and come back to win, I'll never forget it
What was unique too and the signature of Lafleur, the last two minuets of the game, when it was all on the line, he would always shift into another gear and just take over the game. Win or loose(usually win) he always rose to the occasion and more than any player I can think of, came alive and responded in the clutch.
Only Lafleur, along with Orr and Lemieux, could make the fans stand out of their seats or create a buzz in the crowd. The Flower was something. He was the idol of my youth. I had the pleasure of meeting the man at the end of signing session at the St-Laurent Shopping Center in Ottawa in 2000 (or 2001). As he was surrounded by 5 bodyguards, I shook his hand and thanked him for giving me such great memories during the '70s. One of the greatest moments in my life!
Good call, PistolPete... shades of Gretzky, if you permit me to say...! That video, around the 1 min mark, you see Langway and Robinson on the ice together... man, that would've been a scary duo to come up the ice against..!! Don't get me wrong, I liked Rick Green and Ryan Walter, but can you imagine if the Habs had held on to him?
I hear you PistolPete, growing up with the powerhouse dynasties of the 1970's Canadiens, we were truly spoiled and blessed. But I think the owners also actually wanted to win back then. Trying to foist the likes of Damphousse, Recchi, and Koivu on us as superstars when you are used to a diet of Lafleur, Dryden, Robinson etc... is like being fed grits when you are hoping for steak! Who could ever have imagined a 16 yr drought???
Thanks for the fantastic vid. People forget that between 1976 and 1979, he was the greatest player in the world bar none. Wow, that end to end rush at the beginning is something to behold. Like a men among boys.
Lafleur is the reason why I love the Habs and have been following the team since 1975. The man knew exactly where to put the puck in the net. The only guy that comes close is Bossy. But the Flower had flair, charisma and was a playmaker whereas Bossy wasn't.
Big mistake by Savard and Lemaire to force the Flower into early retirement. And to think they played together during that amazing 4 Cup run in the late '70s.
I hear you, to have been able to see Lafleur, Dryden and Robinson and so many others from those great 70's teams live at the Forum would have been heaven! Guy had style. He was amazing to watch on TV all those years. God it is amazing that he retired from the Canadiens at 33. They screwed around so many of their top players. Real shame. He's a class act though for not holding it against them.
The goal scored by the Flower in Calgary in 1981 was something else. The crowd went absolutely nuts after his end-to-end rush that ended in a classy goal.
My grandmother used to talk about going to see Maurice Richard play at the forum. So glad that I got to see both Guy Lafleur and Wayne Gretzky play in the NHL. Life is sweet!
Zeneternity, that's my only regret in life: not seeing Lafleur, Dryden, the Big Bird and the rest of the powerful Habs of the late 1970s live in person performing their craft at the Forum!
I loved it when Guy rocked the Rug on his head. I also loved that he often smoked in the locker room. They don't make them like that anymore. The NHL is dead now.
ottvalley, as a Habs fan, I agree but Orr was still the man in 1974 and 1975. Check his stats! But the Flower was something else. I met the man in 2001 or 2002 here in Ottawa. I was starstruck!
The day they eliminated the rule that allowed the Habs to select the top Francophone player each year, they were finished for the most part. One can only imagine the Habs with Luc Robitaille, Mario Lemieux and Marty Brodeur, they'd still be winning cups!!!!!
Classic Lafleur, he'd score a bunch of goals, outskate everyone - no helmet, receding hairline and all and then light up a smoke on his way to the dressing room making everyone else look like the old timer
habs4life, you've got that right, bud! I've been watching our Habs since 1975 and all I can say is that the Habs of the late 1970s were simply fucking good. They won with class, grit, raw talent and determination. You simply knew they were going to win...regardless!
I wasn't alive during that time period. (Wish I was!) The Habs during the 70's were probably one of the most dominant teams in pro sport at the time.
The 70's Habs were probably the best teams to ever lace up in the history of the NHL.
evh5150316, you've got that right, buddy! I saw the Flower and the rest of the Habs during their glory days and I've seen the Islanders and the Oilers do their thing and absolutely no one came close to the dominance of the Habs!
habs4life41, I was fortunate enough to see the greatness of the Flower and our beloved Habs in the '70s (yes, I'm old fart! :-))!
Lafleur was something else to watch! I met Mr. Lafleur about 6 years ago here in Ottawa at the St-Laurent shopping center. I had just entered the mall and there he was surrounded by 5 body guards. I approached him and I thanked for the great memories of the 1970s and the joy he gave me in my youth! Safe to say, he made my day!
1:45 he misses the pass because it was coming from behind but still he explodes and fakes to the outside then goes back inside. Not many players can do that even today.
Lafleur was the best player on those Habs. But Robinson wasnt far behind. In fact, when things got tough, it was Big Bird that got things done (78 finals goal vs. Bruins).
now he has been convicted and may face jail time. terrible, terrible news.
i remember watching lafleur on cbc, before i even understood what icing was. before that young whippersnapper gretsky kid came along, this guy was the one everyone said, "oh big deal, it's just a hockey game. wait a minute, it's montreal and lafleur can top trottier with two points tonight, maybe i'll watch."
I was fortunate enough to have met the man here in Ottawa back in 2002 or 2003 after he completed a signing session at the St-Laurent Shopping Center. I saw him and went straight to him as he was surrounded by 5 body guards! I shook hands with the man and said "thanks for all you have done during my teenage years". I'm not exactly the type who gets 'excited' about stuff but when I saw Lafleur, I was star-strucked. The man has a a presence, an image!
I've been following the Habs since the 1974-75 playoffs and my fondest memories of the Habs were because of Lafleur. He knew exactly where to put the ******* biscuit in the basket! More often than not, his shots were 6 inches above the ice as he tucked it in just inside the post.
Before Gretzky came along in 1980, Flower was the best hockey player in the world. He suffered a serious injury in 1980 on a hit by Pay Boutette. He was never the same since. What was really amazing is that Guy smoked and drank during his best years.
"Very true! I remember that hit by idiot Boutette in a game played in Hartford. Lafleur was never the same since! Very unfortunate!"
Ah yes, Pat Boutette (Hmmm, a former Toronto Maple Leaf, btw), pulled an Ulf Samuelsson on the Flower in that game in Hartford, did he not? Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull (both Whalers at the time) retired after that game and series.
It was also, in effect, the last game played by the REAL Guy Lafleur.
@1ericamat i betcha that guy who hit guy played with a helmet, helmets have ruined the game, over time with the mandate in the 1980 season. Pros don't need helmets, and if they went back to wooden sticks they could take them off, as could colleges.
Great video! I started watching hockey in '79-'80; first game I saw had the Habs on and I was just captivatated with this one player that seemed to skate circles around everyone else. Then and there I became a Lafleur fan! I never got to see him play live until some years back I saw him play in an Oldtimer's game in Vancouver. After all those years, it was such a thrill to see him skate in person!
All through highschool,Guy Lafluer was my hero,he made growing up just a little bit easier.I remember when I was 15 years old, lying in bed with my transister radio at 1 in the morning listening to the Habs play out in L.A..
LaFleur has to be the most explosive skater I've ever seen! When Federov first came on the scene I thought, "he reminds me of LaFleur coming up the wings like that." Great montage of a great player.
I cannot tell you how much this man meant to me growing up as a teenager in the 70's.He was my idol and gave me many great memories.I have lived and died with the Habs my whole life and Guy Lafleur was always my fav. player.I would love to meet him some day, just to tell him what he meant to a young niave teen.
Guy LaFleur is my great uncle my last name is LaFleur and i never met him lol but my dad has and he owns this helicopter tour right now and my brother wrote to him and said were his like distant cousin or something and he responded! lol
At like 0:08...09...10...11 , the crazy goal he scores , what a amazing play.Does someone know where I can find this goal without the letter written all over the screen?
Apparently there is something going on in this video related to sports. Rumor has it, it involves my favorite right wing ever. I cannot verify but will pass on further information as it becomes available.
I remember skipping school to shake his hand and get a couple of autographs. I was like 10 he was at a Staples store for the old timers tour. He bugged me about not being in school to see him. He is a really nice guy.
Et on voudrait que un homme comme ca temoigne contre sont fils. la loie a sauter la coche. ils dont a cote de la track. corruption de jurisprudence a montreal. faut pas venir fou. longue vie Ti guy lafleur. le monde est rendu... un pere
I wish I was old enough to have seen Guy play. Man, he was amazing. I just wish that the Habs would get a French Canadian superstar back on their team like a Vincent Lecavalier or Daniel Briere.
Such a spectactular player -- and as an old Bruins fan, the one Hab that always scared the hell out of me everytime he was shooting down the wing. I see many of the goals pictured here are against Boston -- thanks for the (painful) memories!
That game he came back to the Forum with the Rangers is the only time in my life I ever cheered for ANYONE scoring against the Canadiens. Guy, the modern day Rocket. Le Demon Blond.
what a player..he lived his life like he played..at the max all the way!! amazing guy when you meet him too, just the way he talks to you..one of the best for sure.
Scotty Bowman said he was the most under-rated player although he was rated as one of the best. He said Guy could literally score at will. Don Cherry said Bobby Orr and Lafleur are the two best players to ever play, cause Orr played for him even tho Les Canadiens were Boston killers.
no problem, it was bob gainey being raised. the stats on Lafleur are great, but it was the way he did it, he was an artist. no one before or since combined speed with puck control like he did.
Guy Lafleur was probably the best skater ever. And those Montreal teams in the 70s were just amazing to watch. I only saw Guy once in person (against the Minnesota North Stars) and he was putting on a show during warmups with perfect passes to his team mates. We just sat with our jaws open watching him flying around the net. Just amazing. Too bad we can't get some better film of him in his prime.
if i were defenceman i would be fetisov or larry robinson and as forward right Guy lafleur < points 252+134-386+112-498 points + 100 - 598 points and in nhl 113+323-436+111-527 POINTS < AND 1 NHL GOAL MTL-NYR 4-2
Brings up childhood memories, who can ever forget Lafleur, on a drop pass from Lemaire, beating Gilbert of the Boston Bruins,( and Lambert scoring the winner in overtime) My head hit the ceiling as i jumped for joy!
Growing up in the 70s the spectacle of Guy Lafleur zig zagging down the ice to score was simply awesome. He was such a great natural skater and talent. One of the All-Time Greats!
The greatest player ever...beats Gretzky hands down...he had NATURAL talent, something that wasn't taught or learned...he just KNEW how the game was to be played...a goalie's greatest fear was GUY sweeping down the right wing...
Guy had such a sense of hockey. Look at the video called Sportsman Guy didnt care about strategies at all he just used his 6th sense to pass/shoot without even looking. And BTW my first name is Guy and I was named in his honor (born in 1977!!) =).
Yes, he was the best, but not an f16!!! He was a Canadien as well as a CANADIAN!If anything, he was like an Avro Arrow soaring along the St. Lawerence!
This guy is the most electrifying presence I have ever seen in sport. Reminds me of Maximus in Gladiator. Like a F16 flying through the Grand Canyon at top speed with perfect precision.

Habsfan0206 2 years ago
1:45 he misses the pass because it was coming from behind but still he explodes and fakes to the outside then goes back inside. Not many players can do that even today.
mogwai142 2 years ago
1:18! What a slap shot! Damn! Only the flower!! Nice move by Guy at 1:36 on the Pittsburgh D.

true blue leafs fan here...guy was the best bar none!!!

Lafleur was the best player on those Habs. But Robinson wasnt far behind. In fact, when things got tough, it was Big Bird that got things done (78 finals goal vs. Bruins).

Guy Lafleur was sensational - thrilling talent.
I'm sorry that he is struggling with a tragic family drama - that does not diminish what he accomplished on the ice.

now he has been convicted and may face jail time. terrible, terrible news.
i remember watching lafleur on cbc, before i even understood what icing was. before that young whippersnapper gretsky kid came along, this guy was the one everyone said, "oh big deal, it's just a hockey game. wait a minute, it's montreal and lafleur can top trottier with two points tonight, maybe i'll watch."

Habsfan0206 2 years ago 2
I've been following the Habs since the 1974-75 playoffs and my fondest memories of the Habs were because of Lafleur. He knew exactly where to put the ******* biscuit in the basket! More often than not, his shots were 6 inches above the ice as he tucked it in just inside the post.
Habsfan0206 2 years ago 2
Before Gretzky came along in 1980, Flower was the best hockey player in the world. He suffered a serious injury in 1980 on a hit by Pay Boutette. He was never the same since. What was really amazing is that Guy smoked and drank during his best years.
1ericamat 3 years ago 17
Very true! I remember that hit by idiot Boutette in a game played in Hartford. Lafleur was never the same since! Very unfortunate!

FischerFan 2 years ago 2
@1ericamat i betcha that guy who hit guy played with a helmet, helmets have ruined the game, over time with the mandate in the 1980 season. Pros don't need helmets, and if they went back to wooden sticks they could take them off, as could colleges.
kylex360 1 year ago
@1ericamat yeah, why don't hockey players smoke between periods any more?

Great video! I started watching hockey in '79-'80; first game I saw had the Habs on and I was just captivatated with this one player that seemed to skate circles around everyone else. Then and there I became a Lafleur fan! I never got to see him play live until some years back I saw him play in an Oldtimer's game in Vancouver. After all those years, it was such a thrill to see him skate in person!

LaFleur has to be the most explosive skater I've ever seen! When Federov first came on the scene I thought, "he reminds me of LaFleur coming up the wings like that." Great montage of a great player.

Scotty Bowman said he was the most under-rated player although he was rated as one of the best. He said Guy could literally score at will. Don Cherry said Bobby Orr and Lafleur are the two best players to ever play, cause Orr played for him even tho Les Canadiens were Boston killers.
