Erebody who love the Roots know this is not a freestyle (last bars is Rakim) but also know that Black Thought has a sick freestyle. Its so funny for people to talk about JayZ, Kanye, 50, Weezy when they consider the best emcees. They ain't even in the league of Black Thought.
I think you're being to literal with the word 'freestyle' I titled it that because Thought was doing rhymes from different rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and as you mentioned Rakim.. As I think on it tho perhaps I should of titled it The Roots Flowin' Live or something like that. But yeah Thought is the man..
Guilty as charged. The Roots have been doing classic quotes for years. Flowing just doesn't sound right to me. I feel like this is really a DJ thing --running down history musically. Blends as in Beats and Blends. I see what yo mean though. . . Peace and Unity especially on the cultural front!
they're all thoughts ryhmes, he mimics kane and g rap's styles, in the 2nd and 3rd verses, respectively, of boom! which is the second song in this clip, he then goes on to actually freestyle over the beat from 'i aint no joke' one of rakims classics, the first song is web
the roots occasionally perform classic songs live to pay tribute to those artists and also to educate the masses on the artists who paved the way for them and others, they dont quote
hold tight, it aint over yet

Who could contend with Black Thought?
Common?
Murs?
MF Doom?
Ghostface?
Immortal Technique?

Thought's a true MC.
Rappers write their lyrics.
MC's recite their lyrics. No need for a pen or a pad.
