    I first heard "Cotton-Eyed Joe" in Bob Wills' legendary rendition. Wills' melody differs substantially from the original (though you can still hear hints of it). After reading the Wikipedia entries and listening to various recordings, I still wonder just when the tune changed shape. Did Wills and Co. "modernize" it for their recording?

  • I've heard a number of substantially different versions of this tune, but I have no idea which would be closest to the original version. Bob Wills had a hot modern band, but his own fiddle playing was very old-timey, so I suppose his band played the melody pretty much like Bob Wills heard it as a boy.
