If you want to play it this fast, well, just do. My daughters piano teacher complained about her tempos (molto rubato). I told her to try to calm her down by holding her by her shoulder and put her hand on daughters neck artery... the teacher knew it all in an instant. For the player it felt like no rubato at all - the emotions were translating into momentuous heart beat swings.
playing this piece at this tempo is certainly an excellent exercise, but not worth recording if you ask me. I will be playing this on easter. I will try to upload my version by then.
Nice job....ignore the infidels splitting hairs over tempi. I have grown to respect and appreciate those who trail-blaze in their thought process contrary to tradition. Such is life....always room for another interpretation. After all, interpretation is reflective of nothing more than opinion.
Interpretation has to take into acccount the nature of the music and understanding it. Treat music within the respect that is due to it, just like people. (You can't do just anything your opinion feels like with a person and expect a good relationship).
It is a debate between the speed of the chorale and its natural flow and the speed of the setting, what it has to say. Let's remember that cantus firmus chants were traditionalyt laid out in augmentation because there was a lot of improvisation to be heard as well.
I am liking your recording more and more. I am looking for the correct tempo, as I am studying the piece for the first time. All the slow tempos are definitely wrong. I just listened to my teacher's recording for the first time. I think that he has the right tempo, which is slightly slower than yours. (I like your playing much better than his). At least you have the capacity to see the life if the piece. I recently concluded that the inner workings of the piece should guide the choice of tempo.
I can see his point, and it is good to explore. Tradition should be known, but it might not be the best vantage since a lot of people have fed into it, and many of them may have merely copied others.
yes, but in contradistiction to most of the other organ pieces of Bach, you don't find many complex musical elements in this one, so I thought it wouldn't be wrong to play a little bit faster. So of course you may be right, but in my opinion, this piece shouldn't be played much slower.
I think you are mistaken for many reasons. Among them tradition, but also listen to the Bach cantata based on this (BWV 4) and you may form a new concept of this piece. Speed does not equal joy.
En effet trop rapide,c'est un choral expressif et non une course.

Second thought: following the soprano hymn melody, this would be slightly fast to sing.

I just found another video of this piece of Bach in which it is played much faster than I did.
I can't get the point why you added it to your favourites even if you're complaining about the way respektively the speed I chose to play.

There are elements you can only feel if you play them slowly (last part). Quickly, there is no emotion.

I think there are complex musical elements there than you're giving credit for.
