  • Charles Laughton was the greatest character actor of the 20th century. Vivian Leigh was a great actor also and versatile. Such beauty, talent and tragedy. Rex Harrison was one of those men who looked better ad he aged. Just like Sean Connery. Wonderful movie. Title was changed for American audiences since they would not know the importance of the street in England.

  • love it

    thanks very much

    RW

  • 'Sidewalks of London' is the most ridiculous, and most obvious Americanised title for a film ever, because we all know they are called pavements here.

  • That opening scene has to be shot into Rupert Street, onto what is now the stage door of the Gielgud theatre. No?

  • Yay! Thanks for posting!!

  • Stunning. Absolutely superb movie. Charles Laughton should have been knighted.

(And watch out for harmonica God Larry Adler in a small role towards the end).

  • Look it's Scarlett

  • omg! this and Gone with the Wind are my faves from her!

  • Laughton's movies often start with a long monolgue of his showing off. That's when I turn of the fat man with the fatter ego.

  • Another all time great with 2 upcoming superstars--Vivien Leigh (my all time favorite) and Rex Harrison; The 2 was previously paired in "the storm in a tea cup!" another great movie. I just love Vivien Leigh.

    Thanks for posting.

  • towards the end of the clip, i can't help but notice the guy in blackface sitting next to Vivian Leigh. this movie was set during the present day (at the time), right? like 1930 ish?

    lol, how times have changed...

and i'd just like to say that Scarlett O'Hara, Quasimodo, and Henry Higgins are all really cute in this movie.

  • Vivien Leigh absolutly gorgeous and ty so much for posting this I saw a comercial on TCM and wanted to watch this.

  • I have been looking for this movie! Thank you!

One question though: why did you title it as Sidewalks of London when the title is St. Martins Lane?

  • There are 2 titles for the film.

  • Oftentimes British films were re-titled for their American release as in the case of this film. The original title as it was released in Britain was S. Martins Lane and changed to Sidewalks of London for it's American release.

  • if you are looking for films and can't find them, always worthwhile looking up the british and us title - for most classic movies as is this one there were two titles. sitedezynz is absolutely right. St. Martin's Lane is the british title, was changed as hardly anybody in the US would have understood the reference to that particular London street and what it represented.

  • The British film version was titled different from the US version

  • you cant get more british than those three

  • This film is a wonderful surprise for me. Can to see perhaps the greatest actors of british and world cine, specially the unforgettable Vivien Leigh is very good. Thank you so much and congratulations for posting it.

  • This is fundamental in acting/cinema as it is historic and true to life.Thank you for these two gems of film stars

  • Thank you so much!
