So this 50mm lens has autofocus on the D3100 even though the camera itself doesn't have a built-in lens focus motor? I know that with the 50mm f 1.8 D the auto focus does not work.

@dannylameo depends on the lgiht, but you generally have to have a fast shutter speed and a very open aperture.

@masni92 not over but both are good :) 18-55 is a very good lens tbh. not like 17-55 2.8 obv. but very very sharp for a kit lens. 50mm 1.4 is fast and creamy bokeh.

@masni92 the 50mm 1.4G is cheap aswell and has AF. If you bought a d40 or early d60 you get the old 18-55 . VR and VRII is here now.

@TheLeticiaBertin by no means am i an expert but from what i've learned so far i believe the f stop range for the kit lens is 3.5 to 5.6 or somewhere along those lines

with that i'm sure you can achieve a depth of field effect but it won't be as drastic as another lens with a low f stop number range of let's say 1.8

again i'm not expert but i hope this helps
