The film could be called 'The Ring' (Or Ringu in Japanese) for many reasons:

1. If you put yourself in the postition of the girl down the well, she is looking up, and can see a 'ring' of light.

2. After watching the tape the phone 'rings'.

3. The mirror on the wall (and on the video tape where the girl appears) is a 'ring' shape.

4. The endless circle of death from the tape could be interpreted as a 'ring'

5. The mouth of the volcano is a 'ring'.

'Rings' apear everywhere in this film.

i dont think the ring is the Japanese name of the movie.

But if it means anything i would guess its the ringing phone rather than anything circular.

coz the Japanese name is really "the ring at midnight"

@jankie2000 The well is shaped like a ring as mentioned. Also, the volcano's mouth is a ring, and the mirror the woman in the cursed video is looking into is a ring. Plus, the deaths never end--they continue when one person passes the video to another, an endless circle. The "ring" motif/theme is everywhere, basically.
