  • What? That is not how you chop an onion. First you get your slap chop, put it over the onion, then you just slap away. 4/5 seconds... your done.

  • wrong. You need the cross cuts because at the side the 'petals' you speak of are going vertically and so you wont get a consistent size. And what's the point of using a paring knife to cut the root out, when you're going to throw that away anyway? It's easier to peel after you've cut it in half too.

  • Not bad, but you should really feed the onion the knife when chopping. Moving the knife increases the risk of getting cut.

  • Pretty poor. In the time it took you to pare out the bloom and root ends, and peel the thing, I could have the entire onion diced to 1/16" by cutting in half but leaving the root ends, doing the cross cuts and chopping.

    Like the other poster said, why cut off the part you're going to throw out anyway. Wasted motion, wasted time.

  • I just posted a dicing onion video that is a bit more descriptive and does promote the cross cuts. Cross cutting is necessary to ensure consistency in piece size - an integral part of cooking.

  • In the other videos, only the root is chopped off. Then after doing the cutting and the slicing from the root side onwards, the head bit that is left is then thrown away, which might save some time.

  • Thanks for the info. I didn't know it takes more time to throw away one end of the onion than it does the other and work towards the opposite end which then get's thrown away as well in either case. Very infomative.

  • You don't cut the onion in half before peeling the outer layer. If you ran your knive through the onion that way, the exterior filth would contaminate the onion. Core top, peel layer, cut in half, slice, dice. That simple. Nice video... Chef trooper
