  • wasnt a pen. wasnt a red card. easy

  • Fletcher playing would have changed the 2009 final for united to be honest...

  • @jaradoref

I know your comments really old but i don't think that is correct. You said even with Fletcher they would ahve lost and Barca would have won without Messi. That is totally untrue and anything could have happened in those circumstances; we will never know. I personally think it all came down to the first goal, as United were completely on top then the goal knocked them out.

  • Fletcher Got The Ball.......BUT.....I Can See Why Roberto Rosetti The Referee Gave A Penalty. If He Gives The Penalty He Then Has No Choice To Show A Red Card. Its One Of Those Decisions Where You Either Give Red Or Nothing. The Linesman In This Case Should Of Seen The Ball Move And Proberbly Did But The Referee Has Already Made His Mind Up.

  • experts say that fletcher's suspension made manchester united loose the final what do u guys think?

  • WDF? no vid?boring personally to me. . .

  • well. im a manchester fan .

but im not one sided .

i think that its not a foul .

he got the ball . refree should look at the replay first . and ask the official .

if they think its a foul they should give a yellow not a red card because its not a foul !

  • That decision cost us the final IMO..

  • Of course the decision didn't cost united the final, they were outclassed by a better team on the day, simple as that.

  • Of coarse we were outclassed fair enough. But it sure didn't help that we had no holding midfielder against one of the best midfields in the world. . .

  • Thats fair enough, but if Liverpool had of had Steven Gerrard in the second leg against Chelsea then who knows. We can all say that sort of thing, but you play with the cards your dealt and United were just outclassed in the final.

  • I don't think Fletcher and Gerard's situation is comparable really. Gerard was injured. Fletcher was suspended and he shouldn't of been. He ended up missing the game of his life (remember Hargreaves is injured so he was almost guarenteed a place) and United missed the physical presence in midfield that stopped the likes of Inter and Arsenal. IMO that's why we were outclassed. Anyways I'm over it now, there's always next season. . . =)

  • Thats a fair point, but my point was that you play with the hand that your dealt. It was 11 V 11 and United were 2nd best. No ifs ands or buts, we can all say what if about anything that doesn't go our way. Ce La Vie. But I am glad your over it, lol. By the way i'm a Liverpool fan and I think United are the best team in the world, they just turned up for 10 minutes on the night and it just wasn't meant to be.

  • Ah that's very refreshing hearing a Liverpool fan say that, lol. And I've tried to block out those 10 minutes, just hurts to think what could of happened if Park had scored that chance. . . Just like thinking what could of happened if Fletch played. Aww crap I don't even want to think about it anymore lol. Over it. . :D

  • Fletcher runs after the ball, he's got a lot of energy, we needed him in the final and i knew as soon as the ref disgracefully sent him off in the semi-final 2nd leg after he won the ball with a fantastic tackle, it could have an effect on the final and then after watching the final i agree even more that his suspension was significant. Also when i was watching that game against arsenal, i remember being delighted all the way through the game until that red card was given which ruined it for me.

  • Get over it!!!

  • For me there is no way this is a red card, or even a foul for that matter. Darren Fletcher is a great player who deserves to play in a champions league final. I think that UEFA was afraid to overturn it because they have already been accused of favoring united in some instances

  • i can't believe they didn't overturn the red card. that is outrageous.

i am not ManU fan, but really? A straight red for getting a piece of the ball? And UEFA can review it? Poorly done on UEFA's part to take away this player's opportunity to step on the pitch in the final leg.

  • his red card has stood!

  • ohwell he is appealing it today and it will be over ruled by the board and he will be able to play against barca

  • not even a yellow if ure going 2 book him aa yellow card cause the match waz virtually over hope this dont affect our chances of beating bacelons

  • it wasnt even a yellow , it was a great tackle , i cud c it watchin the game wen it hapend , the ball changed direction , its a absulute joke , coz he had a great game

  • I'm almost sure that Fletcher touched the ball ! I hope that UEFA will pull this back .

  • Dude, the reef can only see things one time, while we can see everything in slow motion and from good angels.

  • This is true, but UEFA could've overturned it.

  • Wow all you people hate united so much have to lie and say it was a red leave it out aye were talking about the tackle wich was wonderfull to even vidic al be impressed not what teams are playin hate united or not that was a good tackle and i cant wait to see him in the final.

  • he clearly knocked the ball out thus ruling out a cleargoal scoring opportunity because when fabregas flopped to the ground he didn't have the ball anymore!

  • the rules were changed last year from tackles are legal if you contact ball first to the new rule you must only contact ball and this was a red because he was denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity through illegal play. if fletcher had not brought his leg back and caught fabregas legs it would have been clean

  • never a red

    the ref is gay!!!

  • Fletcher got a card for nothing and drogba and ballack was not booked for abusing the Referee.

  • eehm, they were, idiot.

  • its must be a yellow first..because fletcher got the ball...

  • Absolutely a red card. Fletcher was pulling on Fabregas's shoulder first (which is a foul denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity), and the only way that he can touch the ball first is by taking out Fabregas afterwards, committing another foul and denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Just because you get the ball first does not mean that you are allowed to take out the player as well. If you do, you can (and most likely will) be called for a foul.

  • He clearly won the ball before tangling with the player. And he wasn't even coming from behind, he was shoulder to shoulder with Fabregas...

  • Clear foul, red card no doubt. Neutral point of view. Got the ball ? Got 0.1% of the ball and 99.9 % of Fabregas' legs. Also held his arm too so that he gets to the ball. PK and Red card. Well done ref, Fletcher was just clumsy to take such a risk.

  • other way round mate

  • dosent matter as long as u get any part of de ball

  • he got a small touch on the ball but it doesnt matter. you cant go through the player to get the ball, and to make things worse he tackled from behind. i feel bad for fletcher but it was a stupid tackle, especially when they are ahead in the game and arsenal wouldve needed a miracle to win...just a bad decision by fletcher but the correct call

  • No way is it a penalty! Fletcher cleary got the ball. He may have took fabregas with him but he won the ball as well. But o well it took one for the team. UNITED!!!

  • The only reason that he hits the ball first is beacuse he drags Fabregas shoulder before... Clearly a penalty.. Maybe the red card is hard, but its not wrong..

  • The ball was won. So therfore its not a red card and was not a penalty. Poor decision and has cost Darren fletcher the biggest game of his career and biggest day of his life.

  • Red Card

Even though Fletcher got the ball, the ball was still in front of Fabregas. Fletcher only moved the ball slightly, and if Fabregas was not brought down he would have been through on goal.

  • Maarteniey. You talk tatties mate.

Regardless how a player ends up being brought down, if the player making the tackle touches the ball FIRST, it's NO foul, unless of course it was severely cynical, and Fletchers tackle was nowhere near it. That tackle was of legend. I feel gutted for Fletch cause a Champions League final was his dream. And that scumbag referee, Roberto Rosetti has just ruined it for him.

Fabregas should be more honest like Arshavin in the Portsmouth game.

  • his leg was too high,right in fabregas's face,dangerous play,its a foul end of!

  • His leg was just as high as any other 50/50 ive seen in all my years of watching football.

  • Oh ofcourse, if Fabregas's face is in his thigh!

  • This is what happens when you get fucking Itailian refs

  • i think it was a red card, because when fletcher didn't slide Fabregas he would have scored, and that's a rule that you get a red card then.

  • 150% red card and penalty. He didn't knock the ball completely out of Fab's path and brought him down with both legs. If that's not a penalty, I don't know what is.

  • wendigo122, then you don't know what a penalty is.

FIFA rules state that a foul is considered to have taken place if the player making the tackle "makes contact with the rival player that prevents that player from retaining possession prior to making contact with the ball". Clearly Fletcher touched the ball FIRST and then made contact with Fabregas. Therefore, no foul, no red card; just a great tackle.

  • bore off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    and get a life

  • the boy is bein robbed of a chance to play biggest game of his career for a crime he didnt commit, for me he was a definate starter in finale.

Any1 on facebook join the group 'Get Darren Fletcher to Rome!!!'

  • Daren Fletcher is an honest man and a gentleman.

  • what's the point of this thread?

if every dodgy decision was debated this way, there wouldn't be enough room on the Web!

what do you Man U fans need more? League Cup, World championship, Premiership, Champions League final... and you're being fussy on a red card? Bloody hell, your squad's got enough skill and players. What do you care if Fletcher will make the final or not?

Let's hope Barcelona make you come down to earth in 3 weeks' time

    End of

  • Don't whine if your team is not playing as well. United just want justice for the boy because that's the way this club operates. We look out for each other, especially players from our youth system, not revel in the glory brought by some mercenaries and then kick them out and buy some more.

  • Man u is very lucky. The referees loves them very much..ONLY fletcher. look at Barca! Thier main weaknes is obviously the defence, and look what the referees had done to their defence again and again?

  • Old record mate. Get a new soundtrack for yourself.

  • I would tell you if you had shown the fucking replay.

  • i would show the fucking replay if youtube would allow content from the game but they don't so make do with pitures

  • yes..definite red card..man utd is shite

  • yeah man utd MUST be shite to get to the Champions League final

  • He shouldn't have gotten that red card.

    they still won yesterday!

    GO MAN U!

  • Well when you look at the replay, you will see that the ball changes direction because Darren Fletcher hit the ball away but his foot was wraped round febregas..where the ref was stood, he could see the ball change direction ...stupid mistake to give out a red card ...

  • Clearly a foul. 1) high foot 2) from behind and 3) last man. The referee didn't have a choice......... Where's the debate???

  • The Ref is a Spurs fan HAHAHA and in response to those in this thread bleating on about yellow cards,..... thank god that rule (missing games on receiving subsequent yellows) exists, otherwise we'd have a whole team of thugs in Red not just Scholes,

  • Man u got a penalty against Spurs that should never have been given MANCS WEREN'T COMPLAINING THEN. HA HA HA HA

  • someone should shoot those fuckers in uefa. a bunch of yodelling nazi bastards, who know nothing about football!!!

  • was a foul, however it definitely was not deserving of a red card, a booking and penalty yes, but direct red was rediculous, especially after some of the malicious tackles that were coming from arsenal going without even a yellow, it was an appauling action to take, and now Fletcher is going to miss out on an amazing experience, and if the ref couldn't see precisely what had happened at that moment, he shoul have conferred with other officials before rash decisions were made!!

  • He was right to show the red card at the moment, for what he saw. As it appeared to be an offense taking down the player in a scoring situation. However, he should by now have reviewed himself, and make an apology and admit wrong doing. No other referee could've seen that he touched the ball, and did not take Fabregas down in an attempt to stop him shooting. The referee made the best decision he could've at the time. However, at the moment, he has destroyed the dreams of Darren Fletcher.

  • to be honest something should be put in place 2 stop daft decisions like this eg any maneger any game can put in appeal.......not having an appeal dosent make sence

  • That "sending off" was a fucking disgrace. Word.

  • Darren fletcher didn't deserve to be sent off, his heel touched the ball before he hit cesc's leg, it was a good tackle no matter wat yous all think :( i love darren fletcher and its heartbreakin to see your fav player get sent off and not playin in the final :( lets hope something get sorted about it :( loe darren fletcher :D best player ever xO*

  • We'll get justice on May 16 ;)

When he gets his revenge on Fabreags

  • we sure will m8

  • And who cares , never affected the game in any way? But it could affect the final :l

  • it cud depending on hu we get

  • Any team , both good midfields. Might have to change our midfield now. Maybe Ronaldo , Park , Carrick and Giggs

  • ye true ive noticed park's been playing really well, i hope he keeps this form up all the way to the final :)

  • I think he will. We need some energy in there , shame Fletcher won't be there. Anderson , I feel , has a bit of energy

  • yep we sure will i think anderson is a gd player but he needs a goal to boost his confidence

  • Yeh , don't think it'll be this season tbh

  • ye but hpefully it will be soon

  • Yeh , lets just hope we can make it 4 european cups in Rome ;)

  • ye we're capable of doing it. lets just wait and see who our opponents are

  • Never a penalty. Only a thick Arsenal fan would say it was a red card.

  • I am a united fan but in my oppinion, he did win the ball, but the way in which he took fabregas down in doing so is a foul, definately not worth a red card as its not malicious... Its pretty poor reffereeing as like it has been mentioned adebayor only got a yellow even after warnings from the ref...

  • it wasn't a foul in anyway, he won the ball first.

and if it is a foul he has to get sent off cause he's the last man regardless of the intent of the tackle

  • Wenger stated that a red card was too harsh, yes hes last man but its not a malicious foul therefore should only have been a penalty at the most...

UEFA wont allow an appeal so even if the ref does state it was a mistake in his report, Fletcher will still miss the final...

  • The Laws of the Game state a player who commits an offence which denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, should be sent off.

Its an obvious goalscoring opportunity therefore if its a foul it has to be red. Wenger doesn't know shit.

But its a huge mistake anyway from the supposed best referee in the world :/

  • fletcher didn't deserve to be sent off, i can understand from the position of the referee he cudn't see the challenge fully but he shudn't have given a red card as he only gave a yellow for adebayor almost breaking carricks leg with a high challenge. i hope uefa can overturn the red card if the ref asks them to

  • This is the same case as the Gomes - Howard Webb incident. Never a penalty that day, only this time the call didn't aid United nor have a negative impact unlike last time

  • never a foul never a penalty never a red card end of!

  • seriously, what a wast eof time this video was on your part and mine. you suck

  • if you don't like it you can fuck off!

  • Its fair that he should miss the final, as the UEFA rules are very clear indeed. If the ref had given the card to the wrong player... yes they can appear, but in this instance there are no official ground for appeal...so sorry, he must miss the final. end of.

  • arsenallewis04 i think you must be retarded or just in a very bad mood about your lackluster team getting put out in style by manchester united. after the touch by fletcher the ball has travelled out with fabregases path there is no way he could have score unless his leg is 3 meters long. i would say its one of the best tackles ive seen this season and im gutted that the hard working, talented and determined young midfielder will miss the final!!!!

  • no penalty

  • Did any off you idiots watch the incident fletcher right foot gets a clear touch on the ball and diverts it away from fabregas, it was an excellent tackle. Secondly there was no pull back. Prior to this fletches rand hand is resting with minimal pressure on fabs shoulder the momentum of his movement pushes his arm back but there is no pulling or gripping motion by fletcher, if anything fabs left arm movement is more aggresive so cpai321 your talking total shit.

  • i'm gutted for him but was a red. lunged at the last man. ref would have been up by uefa if he didnt give hime a red.

gutted. but defo a red card unfortunately!

  • I disagree, personally i thnk it was a goal-saving tackle and should not have been a red card. He clearly got the ball, though cpai32 might be right tht he pulled him back, if so then def red card. But not for the 'lunge'.

  • Pulled him back first, then lunged. The pull back is a red card offense in itself. Pen, red card.

  • no way was it a penalty neither a red card the lad clearly got the ball and if he's not allowed 2 play in the final its a disgrace

  • Comment removed

  • i didnt say the descision is a digrace but if he gives in his report that it was a red card offence thus keepin fletcher out he final then that is the disgrace

  • further to your great explanation, how do you explain bartons red over the weekend . . .

    you nutjob

  • the difference between this tackle and at that of joey's was that joey barton had a name for being reckless, barton ALSO GOT A PIECE OF THE BALL but also got the ENTIRE of alonso, ditto here, so its a yellow and a penalty, what turns the yellow into a red is "last defender - clear oppurtunity at goal" i like fletcher but he has himself to blame - the tackle wasnt needed manu were 3-0 up and i DO feel sorrie for him . ..

  • It was a penalty. Watch where the ball moves after fletcher gets the touch. Fabregas is still in a scoring position. Its when fletcher wraps his legs around fabregas that the penalty is given for.

Fabregas is in a scoring position and fletcher brought him down.

    Penalty and yellow.

  • I couldn't say that better. No doubt about the penalty, but you can discuss the red card. It doesn't mean anything that Fletcher touches the ball first - Fabregas still has a huge chance to score. People in here are very subjective.

  • No penalty.

    He got the ball.

Might have got Fran but I say No!

  • I think it was a red card.

  • poor fletch. He's always left out of the starting line up now cause ferguson likes the ronaldo-giggs-carrick-scholes line-up in the midfield. Fletch gets some form and ferguson says ill play u in the final. and the ref gives him a red. The only thing I can sorta say in the refs defence is that fletch was the last defender and the ref was looking from the back and wouldnt have seen fletch got the ball first and would have just seen fabrigas go flying.

  • not even a bloody pen wtf is dis ref doing he had a crap whole game i hope he retires from reffing cos that was ridiculous last night

  • I'd give my opinion if you had have uploaded the actual video of the incident.

  • i wanted to but youtube on't allow content from the actual game. sorry

  • yeah they're bastards like that. haven't seen the foul, but from what i have read, penalty arguably deserved but red card most definitely undeserved, yellow card at most.

  • ye it's a shame he's gunna miss the final, unless uefa overturn the red card if the referee's asks them to

  • Wasn't even a foul!

  • UEFA should do the right thing and overrule it. If not, then it just proves once again that UEFA are spineless and have nothing but their own power and self-interest at its heart rather than then justice in football.

  • Red cards can't be appealed at this point in the Champions League. The laws of the game are clear: the referee's decision is final.

  • Absolutely horrible red card - never even a foul, never mind a booking.

Absolutely gutted - never will you find a player that gives more for their team that Darren.

I've yet to speak to anyone who thinks it's a foul, including Arsenal fans.

  • It should not be a red card!!!

  • just ridiculous

  • never a red card!!

poor Fletcher, the ref took away his dream because he made the best challenge in the game

  • all replays clearly show it got the damn ball. definately a harsh decision. Fletcher deserves to play in that final. he's earned it

  • A foul can still be called even if the offending player gets a piece of the ball. Referees are taught to look at the player that is potentially being fouled, not whether the defending player got the ball. From his vantage point, I can understand why he red carded Fletcher for denying a clear opportunity at goal. Fletcher's play was dangerous and reckless... did he really need to be so aggressive when Man Utd were already up 3-0?

  • rubbish u cant give a pen for a good tackle cos song did aderbayor tackle was poor nerly broke man u players leg he got a yellow so fletcher i hope the ref does say he made a mistake and overule the card

  • Here are the rules in regards to a defender touching the ball first and still calling it a foul:............ "However, it can still be a direct kick foul if the ball is touched first but the tackler was "careless, reckless, or used excessive force" and was judged to have kicked, tripped, charged or jumped at the ball handler."...........................Yeah it was a foul, yeah it was reckless and yeah it was a goal scoring opportunity. By the way I am a Man Utd supporter and also a referee.

  • the challenge was not reckless

  • Comment removed

  • thats not true. if you play the ball and win the ball, it's not a foul.

  • Surprising how many people on this thread do not really know the rules. Here it is again:

"However, it can still be a direct kick foul if the ball is touched first but the tackler was "careless, reckless, or used excessive force" and was judged to have kicked, tripped, charged or jumped at the ball handler. "

Was he tripped by Fletcher? Yes or No?

    End of discussion.

  • cant say as not seen it ffs you could have uploaede the vid so we could comment on it now that would be the normal way of asking a question lol ..... sorry am in holland and if you have ever heard the dutch comentatie on foty enough to put you to sleep so did not watch the game last night and went to work before it was on the sports news

  • way I am a Man Utd supporter and also a referee. ,

what crap i have just seen a vid on here where i think darren has made the same tackel but no free kick no penelty and no red card ... and you like you am a referee ok not in football as that hand bag stuff taekwando and we got to make split decissions that can turn a tye so i know there referee could have been under presure but if he made a mistake well it a poor mistake

  • yes ok, refs make mistakes, but surely there should be an appeal committee for something like this. the lad will miss the biggest match of his career. fuckin uefa nazis!

  • nope, they say it would open a "pandora box", like then everyone would appeal >_>. fuck the uefa

  • well then, teams should boycott the competition.

  • i would have uploaded the actual vid but youtube do not allow any content from the actual game.

  • Not a red card. Not a penalty. Maybe he held Fabregas a little before he made his clean tackle, but nothing refs usually gives free kick or penalty for. And he clearly got the ball first, so that he brought down Fabregas afterwards doesnt count as it was not a dangerous foul.

  • uefa should also ban this yellow card crap. rooney was afraid to tackle tonight in case he got booked and missed the final.

a player could get booked in matchday 1 back in september, and have to tread the line until now afraid of missing the next match. fucking stupid!!

next match each player should start with a clean slate. paul scholes and roy keane missed the biggest match of his life cos of these stupid uefa pricks and their stupid rules!!!

  • the lad cant play in the final now cos of a fuckin stupid referee, and he cant even appeal it!!!

united, the fa, and every club in europe should support darren and get this ridiculous decision overturned!!!

  • join the fb group 'Justice for Darren Fletcher!'

    sign the petition!

  • not a red card, but even if he didn't get the ball, why send him off because united were clearly going to win at 4-1 up. it would of made no difference if he just gave a yellow card instead. referee should really just use some common sense on that occasion.

  • i agree. surely a yellow and a penalty is sufficient (if deserved!). a red card AND a penalty is too harsh for such incidents.

  • What are you talking about? Does that mean that as long as you touch the ball you can cut the opponent down afterwards?? I don't think so.

  • He went for the ball, took it first.. it was a good tackle.. no matter what you think.

  • yes you can you moron

  • u idiot, he got the ball first, he can do what the fuk he wants afterwards aslong as he cleanly gets the ball first ! WHICH HE DID !

  • A late reply, I just saw the message again. I'm just objective, which is pretty easy for me to be, because I don't support any of the clubs.

But if you make the football rules after which club you support, I should perhaps find some other people to discuss with, who have the ability to be objective.

  • my god man, that was a late reply...... doesnt matter anyway ! just saying my opinion :D !

  • Yeah, you're right. In some way, I just saw this discussin once again. :)

  • His heel touched the ball before he hit Cesc's leg, good tackle, not a penalty.

  • that was definately not a penalty nor was it a red card. stupid decision from the referee
