Ford put out a tsb which does not work, plugs still break off.Have the lisle tool, part number 65600 on hand which extracts the broken piece.Buy the one piece Champion #7989 plugs which are $25.00 a piece
another option is one piece BRISK 3VR17YS or ACCEL 346S Silver Tip For Wider Heat Range Extremely Resistant To Fouling Low Ignition Voltage Requirements Allows For Easier Starting Can Be Used With E85;LPG;Methanol;Ethanol Works For Injection High Compression And High RPM
I did mines yesterday 1st time and I had to be patient it took 15 minutes taking it apart and 2 hours changing it 1 hour putting back together driver side plugs are easy passanger plugs the 2 close ones to the firewall are a bi$&#!! 01 expedition 5.4 102,000 miles 1st owner plugs never broke on me i know it happens when ur to cheap to change them when u need to thats y they break cause it happend on my girls 05 4.6 v8 140,000 and she never ask me to change them.
It can be done, but its best to get it sooner than later. I've done mine and the best is to use a air gun to blow our the hole, then do what dgman20 did soak the plug hole with penetrating oil and purchase the spark plug tool sold by lisle meant just for the 5.4 and 4.6 motors. You can do it but be patient!
dont buy another ford because they made a mistake using two piece plugs that they had no idea would be a problem 80k miles later??? just deal with the problem by getting prepared and doing it yourself or pay the shop and move on
I have 2 2004 Ford , What a piece of shit . I will never go back to buy another Ford . Already spent 350 to change the spark plugs , 8 of 8 spark plugs break in half . Yes I did follow the procedure . Tool to remove it works great , GET IT IN EBAY BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO CHANGE YOURS . Tool is named : LIL 65600
Also in my F150 two window regulators broke , the 2004 Expedition blow the transm cause Ford forgot to place a ring retain . And alternator was replaced just at 30k miles on both trucks
why do we build shit like this.what a joke.i have never bought a vehicle other than American but if the American car industry don't get its head out of its ass Toyota Honda Nissan Volvo VW BMW Lexis here i come this is BS
@isaacaaron4jesus i hear ya the Japanese make great vehicles. i cannot bring myself to buy one.i try to buy as much American made as i can but its getting harder every day. my brother has a fleet of ford vans out of the 10 trucks 2 blew plugs out this is a design flaw and ford should repair free. but they dont.
25 ft/lb according to Ford. On a side note - I guess not many lawyers drive F150s, let alone change their own plugs, or we would have seen a class-action law suit against Ford over this poor bit of engineering.
TSB does not work! You will still break the plugs this way and make sure you have Lisle's upgraded tool kit, part number 65600 on hand to to remove the remaining part.My Matco dealer gets these on his tool truck and sell quickly to Ford dealerships.Ford's tool is outdated. The 2004 and up triton engines eat up spark plugs and coils.Plugs are $25.00 a piece, the one piece Champions.
This video is good the only thing they dont mention is the lubricant they use to soak the plug before they remove it. I have an 05 5.4 f150 i soaked the plug with carb cleaner for about 20 min and than removed it. Its not easy and it takes time just be patient and very careful not to break the plug. good luck
lol dont listen to anyone who tells you to expand the metal before you try removing these plugs! fuckn wanker you got no idea have you...first thing you do is run a carbon cleaner thru the engine and remove the carbon wich is what is holding the lower end of the the sparkplug casing in head!!! ,NOT HOT! the spark plug may brake youl need a tool to thread the lower end of the stuck casing or hire a tool maker there reasonbly cheap...and a cple of magnets to run thru the cylinder head !
There is a tsb on this.Warm the vehicle up very good.Shut the vehicle off.remove the coils and loosen up the plugs up until they do not come out.pour down engine clean decarbonizer down each spark plug hole and snug up the plugs right up.Let the decarbonizer soak over night and remove the plugs the next day
Unfortunately thats really common for the 5.4L on the fords. The best thing to do is apply a bolt penetrate and let it soak for a while and it would make them come out easily.
I changed mine today on my 04 F-150 4.6L, original plugs 110,000 miles, I really had no problems but for the back ones. I did loosen up the fuel rail but did not remove for the drivers side back plug, but overall not to bad took about 2 hours (oh and runs good after)
When is somebody going to include a video about replacing the coil packs which is the first failure on every Ford with these damn things. It is far more than just removing a 7 mm screw. Do you have to remove the fuel rail on a F150 4.6L 2001.
no to remove the coil packs all you have to do is remove the 1 screw and slip them under the fuel rail. They do not have to come off. I did this on my dads 2003 lincoln when i change the spark plugs
I have a 2000 and am in the process of changing my plugs and coil packs. You can get MOST of the coil packs out without removing the fuel rails, but the fuel regulator on the drivers side really blocks one of the coils. Some say you can just un-bolt the fuel rail so it can move side to side and allow you enough room.
You may want to carefully use a plug chaser with some oil on it(to catch any debris). If it was my truck, I'd remove the heads and do a complete check up on all the valves, plug threads, timing chains/belts, etc. and install new head gaskets. It's a ford, so if you take care of it now, it will last. Only use compressed air before removing plugs, not after, as you might accidentally blow crap into the cylinder. Hand thread plugs carefully at first, so you don't cross threads. Good Luck!!!
I just changed my plugs. I gotta tell the #6 plug was a tough to pull. I thought I was going to break it off in the engine block. To my knowledge, I bet the plugs were never changed. The evidence was in the plugs, noting that the ends were burned off practically. Probably the reason for the terrible gas mileage. Still working on the truck, hopefully this tune up will fix the start up problems.
should always blow the spark plug hole with compressed air before removing spark plug and after to make sure no grit gets into the threads of spark plugs . also if a plug breaks o in the cylinder use special tool to remove metal sleeve
I hate these plugs, workin at the dealer, they always break. Best way I have found is to get the truck warm, do and injector/cumbustion chamber flush and soak the plugs with penetrant let them sit for 10 mins then crack them and spray em again
i thought your not supposed to change sparks unless engine is completely cold? also, do you do that on 98-2003 ford triton V8's? cause they have one of the worst engine problems in recent history(blown plugs)
Only issue with the one piece plugs is that when they do break (they can) you'll be removing heads to get them out

If you really like the engine I suggest you have all the plug holes heli-coiled.
Then, there should be no further problems.
Why did Ford chose to make the spark-plug threads so ductile?
Perhaps a simple application of anti-seize to the plug threads when the engine was new would solve 99.9999999993 % of the problems.
