I have worked in advertising for 12 years and I can honestly say that I have NEVER had and advertiser make this kind of comment or any suggesting what kind of stories we should write. They only care about how many people are reading. But that is besides the point, I would be just as opposed to advertisers deciding what we should write as journalists deciding. Let the market decide. If they like what they see they will buy and circ will go up.

The journalist put herself in the crosshairs with her loaded question. It's cut off here but it starts with "I understand about new revenues but I'm a journalist..." It's that little word "but" that set the condescending tone of her question. Its like saying to him you know business but I know what people need to know. It does not excuse his rudeness at the end. And if she was a stronger journalist she should have followed up with a comment and even tersely said thank you before walking away!

If an owner of newspapers comes unglued by a question like that, U.S. journalism is in even worse shape than it seems. He should stick to a business he has experience in. It doesn't have to be the Enquirer but it doesn't have to be a force feed of material that "journalists" think the public should be reading. Journalist should be figuring out how to write what the public wants to read. The purchasing public has too many choices available to take a high and mighty approach. Only the monolpolies that changed survive. Newspapers must do the same.

It is not inevitable. It is a consequence of public policy, such as that of the FCC regarding such things as ownership of a newspaper and TV station in the same city. Always beware when the rich tell you something is inevitable. It usually means it is an issue they want off the table.

Saw on the news the other day that one of his former clients is writing a book about an affair they had. It's all just to recoup some of the money she lost. I don't include all Jews. When Jews are involved in a serious crime though, more often than not it's a financial white collar fraud, embezzlement, insider trading as opposed to being a rapist for example. Jews are generally intelligent, especially of the Ashkenazi origin that is prevelent here in the US. People just need to understand where they get their reputation. I have worked in advertising for 12 years and I can honestly say that I have NEVER had and advertiser make this kind of comment or any suggesting what kind of stories we should write. They only care about how many people are reading. But that is besides the point, I would be just as opposed to advertisers deciding what we should write as journalists deciding. Let the market decide. If they like what they see they will buy and circ will go up.

Big Wigs at the Tribune Towers have been saying FU to all its employees for the past 7yrs with their lack of initiative & slash and cut policies just to continue securing the necessary profit numbers to maintatin their annual bonuses and fat exit payoffs. I didn't see a single one of them cut those numbers to reinfuse millions into our struggling cash flow. That may have gone towards reinvigorating the moral and drive of the company and push towards a new way. Now we'll push with SZ at the helm!

Bullshit. The "radical left" doesn't hate Jews. It hates people who think the Israeli government must NEVER be criticized, and it supports the legitimate right of Palestinians to be free from oppression of the Occupation. A lot of Jewish people are on the left and agree with these views.

He's trying to save a lot of jobs, and you need money to pay these reporters. I don't think any of them want to work for free or even take a pay cut. So you need advertisers to pay the salaries. As much as editorial people think their stories are the only thing that counts in the newspaper you need a balance of ads/edit !!!
He knows how to save companies and some people think they don't need to change to save the company. Guess what, thats why Tribune has tumbled down to the ground.

Believe me, while he was speaking to that "journalist", he was getting nothing but eye-rolls and unwillingness to listen. As a Tribune employee I know I speak for thousands of us when I say we're thrilled he's in charge now.

If an owner of newspapers comes unglued by a question like that, U.S. journalism is in even worse shape than it seems. He should stick to a business he has experience in. My theory is he mistook the questioner for some woman he was foreclosing on. Like many other people have come to realize, you need to go online and read the European press.

Maverick or no maverick, he needs to sell newspapers & inspire his employees to think out of the box, as he has implied. Again, he needs to think about who is his audience. He is not some rogue Real Estate baron in this market, he's in the PR business where everything he saids counts. He's going to have to accept change. Sam Zell may be rude but he is correct in saying that the product, the newspaper, has to be something the people want. It doesn't have to be the Enquirer but it doesn't have to be a force feed of material that "journalists" think the public should be reading. Journalist should be figuring out how to write what the public wants to read. The purchasing public has too many choices available to take a high and mighty approach. Only the monolpolies that changed survive. Newspapers must do the same.

It is not inevitable. It is a consequence of public policy, such as that of the FCC regarding such things as ownership of a newspaper and TV station in the same city. Always beware when the rich tell you something is inevitable. It usually means it is an issue they want off the table.

It was rude because her question was loaded. It also came across with a very real journalistic "I know better than you" attitude. The final rude insult came with the turn of the back and head shake. If she had finished with a "Thank you but I disagree" and walked away sans head movement, no FU or other expletive would have been uttered. Sam had already stepped back.

I disagree. I sat in the back very close to the center aisle. She turned around at the start of the applause which was at the end of his "puppies and Iraq" comment. Immediately as she walked away her head was swaying from side to side. Thats when Sam leaned back in to deliver his now infamous FU.

He is not the reason newspapers, including the Tribune ones, are doing poorly...but he is the only one with some balls to say we need to get out of the monopolistic mentality that governs newspapers and try new things to return to profitability and corporate stability for its new owner/employees.
