Randolph Thompson's piece was performed the evening of January 19, 1960 in Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. That was the evening before President Kennedy was inaugurated. He and his family and entourage attended. The National Symphony Orchestra performed, together with the Georgetown University Glee Club. A snowstorm struck the ciity that evening, tying up traffic and reducing attendance at a memorable historic and artistic event.
Thanks for posting this video -- Randall Thompson's piece is one of the best of its kind.
I wonder whatever happened the the original 1943 recording from UVa that was broadcast to the American Forces then fighting in Europe and the Pacific. Even though the composer made versions for mixed chorus after the first performance, I think his first setting for male chorus only better fits the tessitura of his writing and aids in expressing the martial aspects of Jefferson's text.
