Looks great, I just got a ps3 because I won one. So I'm a bit late on the wagon. I might buy this, it's £7 from Grainger games 2nd hand. I assume this can be played multiplayer online? Are there many people still playing it online?
Rented it last night and returned it this morning. This game is weak. Just to name a few problems. The predator can only fire 2 blasts from his shoulder canon then needs to search forever to find a recharge station. The marine cannot aim his gun! he must fire from the hip at crosshairs on the screen. The levels are plain, the action is watered down, repetitive and just boring. The Aliens vs Predator franchise has always been a great concept in the wrong hands with both the movies & videogames.
It has the best looking Singleplayer AVP experience yet but the Quake style Multiplayer just does not work for me, the multiplayer on AVP2 was immense and this 3rd one just doesn't realise that as well as its predecesser
Hey, loved your majesty review. I'm hoping that Alien v Predator will be just as magic. I love how seriously you take your reviews and am impressed and the level of thought you put into them. I hear other reviewer's and it's just typical stuff but you find cool ways of saying things about the game in a way the audience can appreciate.
@swedishhockeypro The original AVP was released in '99 on pc. Next came AVP 2 also for PC. The confusion comes from the current AVP and its title, Aliens vs Predator. People that don't know about the previous games would think its the first game in the franchise. It's basically a reimagining of the one released back in 1999, so technically its not AVP 3 like so many people call it. If it were the 3rd game in the franchise they would have just called it Aliens vs Predator 3 or something :)
This is what AVP is and should be too bad the shitty films don't relise that for it to be AVP it should have the fucking Coloniel Marines in it not take place in a alaska and some podump hick town. Ugh but AVPR did get something right least it didn't use the stupid Smooth cranium on the aliens like the first movie did. Although the movie was so god damn dark you couldnt fucking tell that they used the Ridged cranium except on the cover. Personally I think AVP only works in Video games and Comics
Very kick-ass game and the graphics are top of the line. But those face-huggers on how they did it is a bit extreme. When I have to fend those things off and it feels so damn real when I have cats running around in the room especially when they scurry about and then next thing I have a face-hugger spider on my fucking face. Seriously some "CRAZY" shit!! Beyond fucked up if you have a fear of spiders. It just freaks me out because I never saw anything so realtime as much as a thing on my face.
The only good about this game is the aliens. They look and move so damn good!
But the rest is boring. Handheld gameplay, too linear, boring story, bad gameplay. Sure you are not giving this game a too good "score" just because it got overall bad scores (going against the flow just to be special) ;)
going the alien is well good u just go to settings and put on auto wall climb and ur sorted, going the predator is just like the films aswell which is good, havent went the marines yet
Great review. But it seems you barely touched multiplayer to see how fun it can be. Multiplayer is the longevity of the game. Campaign is way too short and you also never mentioned the new combat system in this game which is entirely different from AvP and AvP2. It's a system borrowed from the Condemned games which add more strategy to the game.
Anyways, good job. You gave a more fair review then sites like IGN, Gamestop etc.
ok it's the best game so far,i'm still not very convinced with it,because it still it's first view which is disappointing,i think it's time to make it into third view, which will be alot better, leave the firsdt view for quake and doom games only.
Hmm I thought you wouldnt like this game. I didnt. Too linear, too cartoonish, the plot was so boring I didnt want to indulge in it. I felt it was "consolated" too. And as a marine I didnt feel to vulnourable, cause you can punch and knock down aliens.
last hope now is Colonal Marines, but its made by gearbox....arrgh
I liked it and agree with you. I am so glad that rebellion was a developer, who loved the franchise. I just don't get how Gamespot hated it. It's the most diverse game I've played!
Nice review! There's one thing I don't like about this game that turned me off even though I consider myself a "fan" of AvP series was the demo on pc. Like you've said, games are getting expensive and I've been more screwed with content, promises, and false impressions more so than I used to back in the NES days. In demo, it was multiplayer which is a mistake I think because I can't enjoy the demo with douches and lastly it lagged so much even with crossfire setting...
Yeah I would recommend this on PC....(like any FPS). You get in game chat (literally built in the game chat unlike consoles). and use a keyboard to to do it. Plus you have all the precision and accuracy with the mouse. And you get mods, dedicated servers, in game music (or whatever you want, it's a PC), and it seems to lag less and look better.....=/ (And I'm using HDMI cables) I really hope I can get the PC version and have it run well. Consoles are good but I really want the full enjoyment.
Good call on the wall hack. It doesn't mean they can see through walls but it's the best and easiest way to represent it. Most people just dont think twice about many things. On the note of the instincts maybe they could of had an aura that didn't exactly center on the subject, to give away immediate area but not direct position
Must say this game is excellent I often seem to play it at christmas with my sister she is absolutely brilliant at it. I managed to download the game utterly free for my sony ps3 from 115 games |DOT| com they have thousands I couldnt beleive that they are all free by the way 0:33 to 3:53 was magnificent
I can't help but notice you review this as a single player game. Odd since the game advertises so damn heavily on multiplayer with "Multiplayer will never be the same" as their tag line. You hardly touch on the game's many flaws and you lavish the game and Rebellion with praise, comparing the game to AvP 1 and 2 I don't see how you do that man, aside from more pred story, melee, focused jump, and better graphics this game seems more like a step backwards than a step forward. Are you on the take?
I don't know about the Xbox 360 and PS3 version, but the PC version was an insult because it was release woefully unfinished with several gameplay issues unaddressed, for instance when you turn auto-transition off in the options menu it doesn't work properly, you still auto-transition sometimes. The multi-player match system is horribly broken and while I have to say once you find a good match it's a blast to play, but simply finding a good match is hard. Compared to AvP 1 1999 this is a pass.
The only thing I don't like about the online play is....the other idiots online. When I grab someone, I can't move at all, and there is always some other asshole around the corner and takes advantage of it lol. Lol, I don't do that, when I see someone else doing a grab, I either run past them, or wait for the other to finish.
Wow, this is only the second review I've seen of AvP but the other one is the poler opposite. It had nothing good to say about the game, accept that the cut-scene kills were pretty good.
This is a fantastic review, and I'm glad to find someone else who actually enjoys the Alien, Predator AND AVP films (and who realizes that the man at the end of Alien 3 was definitely NOT a freakin' android, to boot)! So many fans seem dedicated to hating everything that came out after the '80s... sigh. Anyway, I can't wait to play this game. I also have never played the PS1 titles, so I'm thinking of picking up Alien Resurrection and Alien Trilogy soon. Hopefully they'll be worth it.
@RappingNinja i like the AVP films too i really do not see what the problem is with them, and i also like the alien films and the predaotr films and it good to what somethink different
Awesome review! Your best yet. No joke. Although I havent played a modern video game in a bunch of years, Im a big fan of the Alien and Predator movies. So from what I see here, this game has everything I could have ever wanted, certainly more than alien trilogy on playstation. Incidentally, Henrickson is referred to as Bishop 2 in the Alien 3 novelization but of course that doesnt matter and the real person idea makes more sense to the ongoing story.
@TheFinalHighlander I had Alien Resurrection on Ps1... it looked and played like a PC game from around that time (I.E. it looks and play better than most PS2 games)
@TheFinalHighlander Alien trilogy is a great game! to be honest it is a very scary game, especially the huggers lol. that game is the only reason i kept my ps2 ;) xD at the shotgun lol
The "Highlander Reviews" title was made using Adobe After Effects and a number of additional plugins such as Trapcode Particular for the particle effects and Zaxwerks 3d Invigorator for the text.
Great review, covered all major ground. I'm a huge Alien/Predator fan and can't wait to play this. I sadly never played the original AVP for the PC (just a couple of demos), but this looks to be the best and most complete AVP game of them all.
Nice use of the Alien 3 Genesis/Mega Drive music at the end, too XD
Unbelievably good review man. This game looks fucking sweet! I wish I had a PC that could run it. I need to upgrade my gear so I can get my hands on this. Wow.
@TheLastAmericanHero Yup, it's true, though the missions get pretty short ones you get to know all the campaigns. As for me, i played Predator campaign a lot, so i can simply complete it, in just over an hour.
5 starts. Awesome to see you doing reviews again. Loved this review...found it to be thorough as usual and it was good to hear the take of a fan of the AVP series.
Now if they could just make a decent Terminator game, and then mesh the two together.....ahhh.....just the thought.
I also think it might have to do with the fact that this is the first of the modern series to be released on the consoles. That's something that companies often do, rather than given console gamers a sequel to which they had no prequel, they just say "fuck it" and reboot. But it's particularly odd here since as I'm sure you know, Rebellion were also responcible for the 1999 game.
Exactly. Although there was "Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction" for console gamers. But that was a different genre, and I'm guessing fans don't speak well of that. That Rebellion did the 1999 game is more evidence (to me) that this should be a sequel.
Judging from the footage of this game, there also seems to be a lot more emphasis on scripted events (grasping the human's head while a facehugger jumps on his face), and this reflects that console oriented post-"God of War" trend towards QTE's.
I also originally stated in this review that even though I loved both Rebellion's Aliens versus Predator and Monolith's (a company I love) sequel, I did prefer the former so was glad that Rebellion were returning for this installment.
Also, for anyone interested Rebellion's 1999 Aliens versus Predator is available on Steam and has been reworked to be compatable with modern systems and had a few extras thrown in. It's called "Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000" and it's an absolute steal.
Same here--I also liked the original over the sequel! Although we seem to be a minority. Would you care to share (briefly) what you liked about the Rebellion's "AvP" game as compared to the sequel?
For me, the original "AvP" game just felt more open-ended. Each level in the sequel felt very, VERY scripted by comparison. I also like how they treated the Predator more in the original; you could use Plasmacaster while cloaked, just like in the movies. The spear in the sequel was disappointing
I think that Monolith's game was balanced more for multiplayer than anything else and because of that, the species (especially the Predator), just didn't feel like he should. He was far too slow for one thing.
Also I don't know why but AvP 2 always seemed rather "cartoony" to me, like I was playing a comic book game (which I guess in a sense is appropriate) but I preferred the look of the original. More dark and more gritty.
On the other hand, I did love the Alien lifecycle and the fact you could play as the "runner" alien from the third film. He was always the coolest alien type to me.
I agree. The graphics in "AvP", while not as technically detailed as "AvP2", felt slicker and more slimy...far more appropriate in the context of "AvP" universe.
I would have appreciated it if you had made some more direct comparisons to the previous "AvP" titles (like explaining how "In the previous AvP games, you could do this, but in here you can do THIS...). But that aspect might have required extra footage though, and I can tell you're busy enough! I guess you expected your audience to be very familiar w/the old titles. Maybe I'm just disappointed that you didn't do proper reviews for the original games. No stress; this is a very solid review.
Yeah sadly I DID talk about the older games because I knew their fans would have specific questions but thanks to the YouTube ten minute limit some things had to go and since those moments were the least relevant to the issue at hand, they were first in line.
Still if anyone has any questions about anything they can always ask since I've played all the games to death.
I mean, it's a SPEAR! You're supposed to IMPALE people with it! But in "AvP2", you could do anything with it BUT impale people. You couldn't even throw it, which I found immensely disappointing.
Also I didn't like the fact that the Predator had an automatic energy recharge device handy in "AvP2". That felt kind of...cheap. Especially since you could restore your health at any quiet point in the game.
I also missed Marine's twin pistols...although they did have a version of that in expansion.
Thats the stuff man! 5 Stars!! Had really been looking forward to your new video and once again you more than delivered! Very entertaining and well edited and paced.
Liked the expanded credits and introduction titles too. Very polished and professional work, like it! I've seen the Alien films and Predators films, but not the AvP series at all. Will have to catch up with it. Was it hard to comb through all the footage you captured over the three campaigns to find what you wanted?
Absolutely and I give you a ton of credit for taking on complex games that have a lot of meat to them so to speak. Does it feel different to craft a review for a new game than it does for a game that you have a lot of nostalgia for? IE Strider or Golden Axe?
Good that you are continuing to challenge yourself and I think as a result you are really going to grow as a reviewer and writer. Very much appreciate all your efforts and the great catalog of reviews you've composed thus far!
Thanks. Well yeah when I'm reviewing games that mean something to me personally and were an important part of my childhood, I tend to want to reflect upon that. Besides it makes up for the fact that the games just aren't as relevant anymore.
When it comes to new releases like Aliens versus Predator, I just get stright to the point and detail the game as much as possible because I know that anyone considering buying it will want to have as much information as possible.
Looks great, I just got a ps3 because I won one. So I'm a bit late on the wagon. I might buy this, it's £7 from Grainger games 2nd hand. I assume this can be played multiplayer online? Are there many people still playing it online?

@TheFinalHighlander I had Alien Resurrection on Ps1... it looked and played like a PC game from around that time (I.E. it looks and play better than most PS2 games)

@TheFinalHighlander Alien trilogy is a great game! to be honest it is a very scary game, especially the huggers lol. that game is the only reason i kept my ps2 ;) xD at the shotgun lol

Nice review! The short single player campaign is keeping me from buying it though.

Proffesionally editted.
What software did you use for the beginning of the video *Highlander Reviews* (just after the Wedotech intro)?
HoofitWarcraft 2 years ago
I'm not sure it was Tim Porter from digitalodyssey who offered to make that for me. Sure beats the old Sony Vegas text intro.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
@HoofitWarcraft
The "Highlander Reviews" title was made using Adobe After Effects and a number of additional plugins such as Trapcode Particular for the particle effects and Zaxwerks 3d Invigorator for the text.
Hope that helps ;)

Awesome. Thank you.

I hated the ending of the Alien campaign when you think you are about to play as the alien/predator hybrid then wham! end of game.
P.S great review as ever, 5/5.

The alien campaign is lacking.

I was gonna buy this for sure but the reviews of 5 out of 10 and 4 out of 10 put me off,
I dont usually listen to reviews but such a low score i thought doesnt deserve £30 but based on this review I give it a go
great review best reviewer on youtube David ;)

Great review, covered all major ground. I'm a huge Alien/Predator fan and can't wait to play this. I sadly never played the original AVP for the PC (just a couple of demos), but this looks to be the best and most complete AVP game of them all.
Nice use of the Alien 3 Genesis/Mega Drive music at the end, too XD

Unbelievably good review man. This game looks fucking sweet! I wish I had a PC that could run it. I need to upgrade my gear so I can get my hands on this. Wow.
youtubasoarus 2 years ago
you don't need much to play this even on high settings.

Looks really cool. Might pick this one up sometime.

Have you upgraded from your 9800gtx?
Murkerr 2 years ago
Nope still got the same card and it runs the game perfect on highest settings.

Great review.
I heard that it takes around 7-8 hours to beat all the campaigns, is there any truth to that?
Thanks. Keep up the quality reviews.
TheLastAmericanHero 2 years ago
Yeah unfortunately that's true. I did it in nine myself. I'm hoping that we get some nice downloadable content to expand upon that playing time.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
@TheLastAmericanHero Yup, it's true, though the missions get pretty short ones you get to know all the campaigns. As for me, i played Predator campaign a lot, so i can simply complete it, in just over an hour.

Sounds like a good game :)
I May do a review of Divinity II. It's probably the best dungeon game I've ever played but the user needs a dual core CPU at minimum.
I use a 2.4Ghz quad core with Divinity II.
Rock on !

5 starts. Awesome to see you doing reviews again. Loved this review...found it to be thorough as usual and it was good to hear the take of a fan of the AVP series.
Now if they could just make a decent Terminator game, and then mesh the two together.....ahhh.....just the thought.
h3dl3ss 2 years ago
Oh tell me about it. We NEED another Robocop versus The Terminator game in the same format as the Aliens versus Predator series.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
Great Review, as always.
I can really detect the 'wedotechness' in this one and 0:20 wow, that what I call an opening.
HSPCVIDEO 2 years ago
I also think it might have to do with the fact that this is the first of the modern series to be released on the consoles. That's something that companies often do, rather than given console gamers a sequel to which they had no prequel, they just say "fuck it" and reboot. But it's particularly odd here since as I'm sure you know, Rebellion were also responcible for the 1999 game.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
I was responding to a comment left by "azricekracker" which is now gone.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
Sorry David, I didn't expect you to reply to it so quickly, and I felt it was worded awkwardly, so I deleted it and reposted it.
Damn, I wish Youtube would just let you edit comments instead of being forced to repost them. It screws up the flow of the conversations.
aznricekracker 2 years ago
Exactly. Although there was "Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction" for console gamers. But that was a different genre, and I'm guessing fans don't speak well of that. That Rebellion did the 1999 game is more evidence (to me) that this should be a sequel.
Judging from the footage of this game, there also seems to be a lot more emphasis on scripted events (grasping the human's head while a facehugger jumps on his face), and this reflects that console oriented post-"God of War" trend towards QTE's.
aznricekracker 2 years ago
I also originally stated in this review that even though I loved both Rebellion's Aliens versus Predator and Monolith's (a company I love) sequel, I did prefer the former so was glad that Rebellion were returning for this installment.
Also, for anyone interested Rebellion's 1999 Aliens versus Predator is available on Steam and has been reworked to be compatable with modern systems and had a few extras thrown in. It's called "Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000" and it's an absolute steal.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
Same here--I also liked the original over the sequel! Although we seem to be a minority. Would you care to share (briefly) what you liked about the Rebellion's "AvP" game as compared to the sequel?
For me, the original "AvP" game just felt more open-ended. Each level in the sequel felt very, VERY scripted by comparison. I also like how they treated the Predator more in the original; you could use Plasmacaster while cloaked, just like in the movies. The spear in the sequel was disappointing
aznricekracker 2 years ago
I think that Monolith's game was balanced more for multiplayer than anything else and because of that, the species (especially the Predator), just didn't feel like he should. He was far too slow for one thing.
Also I don't know why but AvP 2 always seemed rather "cartoony" to me, like I was playing a comic book game (which I guess in a sense is appropriate) but I preferred the look of the original. More dark and more gritty.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
On the other hand, I did love the Alien lifecycle and the fact you could play as the "runner" alien from the third film. He was always the coolest alien type to me.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
I agree. The graphics in "AvP", while not as technically detailed as "AvP2", felt slicker and more slimy...far more appropriate in the context of "AvP" universe.
aznricekracker 2 years ago
I would have appreciated it if you had made some more direct comparisons to the previous "AvP" titles (like explaining how "In the previous AvP games, you could do this, but in here you can do THIS...). But that aspect might have required extra footage though, and I can tell you're busy enough! I guess you expected your audience to be very familiar w/the old titles. Maybe I'm just disappointed that you didn't do proper reviews for the original games. No stress; this is a very solid review.
aznricekracker 2 years ago
Yeah sadly I DID talk about the older games because I knew their fans would have specific questions but thanks to the YouTube ten minute limit some things had to go and since those moments were the least relevant to the issue at hand, they were first in line.
Still if anyone has any questions about anything they can always ask since I've played all the games to death.

Cool review. Nice use of the geneis song for the credits! I think I'll give this game a shot.

I love avp2 back in the day! This game looks tops.
Surfking9000 2 years ago
I mean, it's a SPEAR! You're supposed to IMPALE people with it! But in "AvP2", you could do anything with it BUT impale people. You couldn't even throw it, which I found immensely disappointing.
Also I didn't like the fact that the Predator had an automatic energy recharge device handy in "AvP2". That felt kind of...cheap. Especially since you could restore your health at any quiet point in the game.
I also missed Marine's twin pistols...although they did have a version of that in expansion.
aznricekracker 2 years ago
Thats the stuff man! 5 Stars!! Had really been looking forward to your new video and once again you more than delivered! Very entertaining and well edited and paced.
Liked the expanded credits and introduction titles too. Very polished and professional work, like it! I've seen the Alien films and Predators films, but not the AvP series at all. Will have to catch up with it. Was it hard to comb through all the footage you captured over the three campaigns to find what you wanted?
robadue57 2 years ago
Yeah that's always a problem, it takes hours on end. Definately the worst bit of the reviewing process but ultimately worth it I think.
TheFinalHighlander 2 years ago
Absolutely and I give you a ton of credit for taking on complex games that have a lot of meat to them so to speak. Does it feel different to craft a review for a new game than it does for a game that you have a lot of nostalgia for? IE Strider or Golden Axe?
Good that you are continuing to challenge yourself and I think as a result you are really going to grow as a reviewer and writer. Very much appreciate all your efforts and the great catalog of reviews you've composed thus far!
robadue57 2 years ago
