NO they are not subsidized. When you apply for the loan for the car you ask for $40,000 you monthly payments are calculate based on those $40K.

If you want you can apply for a Rebate (a incentive that the government is using so people will buy cars that produce low or no pollution) IF you really DO NOT want the rebate then DO NOT apply for it. The Volt will not qualify for a rebate from the State of CA but the LEAF will.

@hawkermustang It's not a bailout, it's a tax credit to encourage people to invest in plug-in technology. Once demand and battery production picks up, these credits won't be necessary. I'm happy my country is willing to encourage adoption of technology that will reduce our eventual dependence on foreign oil. I know taxes and politics can be a polarizing subject, but I think that history will show that encouraging future car technologies via tax credits was the right choice.

I do agree that nuclear has to be a major part of a clean energy strategy (France and several other EU countries already get this, plus nuclear is much cheaper per megawatt than other clean alternatives).

China is paying our debt because of an unsustainable trade deficit. We're going to have to start making things that people want to buy/export, and GM/Ford are leading the charge. It shows the quality of American engineering and manufacturing is on par with Germany or Japan.

$7,500 should go towards the car. I am against that amount of money being given to people because i feel a good amount that money would be wasted on something unimportant.

For example, the MSRP is $41,950. The Vehicle was sold at $41,000. The consumer doesn't know. At the table, they are surprised to find that our Government will take off $7,500, making the vehicle only $33,500.
