There's a limit to how far you can milk the joke. Half the audience know the punch line already, including the fellow in the front row who will roar HO HO HO and clap to show he knows. I once played this in a Beijing park on a Sunday morning, where NOBODY had ever heard the piece, and we were able to count 12 full bars before downing tools. Can't do that in the Wigmore Hall.

@CEdubsLO I see both sides, though I personally would like to have seen the instruments go down. But hey, at they fooled that one guy in the bottom left! Look at 3:49. :-) nice performance overall.
Haydn's many other musical jokes include numerous false endings (e.g., in the quartets Op. 33 No. 2 and Op. 50 No. 3) says WIKIPEDIA... so i didnt get that false
Whilst some people are going about it the wrong way, it was right to point out that the instrumentalist's should've put down their bows in each silence. It's part of the comedy of the piece, the mockery.
However, if the performance was slightly lacking in drama, it more than made up for it in musicality!
Wow! Well "moldyoreo" I don't see any work of yours posted on youtube. I checked you out. Nothing originallol. What? You can dish out but you can't expose yourself? I doubt you even know viola technique. Did ya look it all up on wikipedia? Pussy
Hehehehe, I would like that if in the end of movement, in every silence, all musicians put the bows down... So all audience clap! ... then continue with it! :P
For a while Mozart listened patiently: when he could bear it no longer and the fault-finder once more conceitedly declared: 'I would not have done that', Mozart retorted: 'Neither would I but do you know why? Because NEITHER of us could have thought of anything so APPROPRIATE & EXCELLENT!"
At a private party a new work of Joseph Haydn was being performed. Besides Mozart there were a number of other musicians present, among them a certain man who was never known to praise anyone but himself. He was standing next to Mozart and found fault with one thing after another.
@moldyoreo Sorry to offend you. I'm a Baroque musician as well. It's a mixture of Russian method, bad habits, and playing too much Baroque viola. No one is perfect (except for you, of course).
Only Haydn! It's a shame that now a days outside of learned musicians and enthusiasts, his name has somewhat fallen into obscurity. He is most definitely my favorite composer.
it should be at a faster or else the "joke" effect is not that effective anymore. it gets a little boring especially when the beginning theme keeps getting repeated
its the grand pauses at the end where they start the phrase again and then it just stops... lol, im a violinist and having played this i think its hilarious.
Thanks montaz. This was a performance for our chamber music lab class, so most everyone knows the piece. We might have had to wait a pretty long time..... Hope you enjoyed it.
Amazing piece, I'm not a music student, but I just started getting into classical music, and got the recommendation to listen to this on the subject of music evoking emotion.Amaaaaazing
We just went over this in music history class earlier today. Most of us were busting up at the end. This was just awesome. since i plan on majoring in music history, I know I'll dominate if this comes on on next quiz or the midterm, which it probably will. For those that don't find the humor in this are sorely missing out, are not getting enough classical music in their life, or don't listen to classical at all and are just boed by it, which is just sad. Awesome stuff!
We just did this piece in a music history class as well...the professor had mentioned in the lecture that Haydn "created problems" in music that had never come up before in that he used the accepted rules in composition to mess with them. This was an excellent example! Amazing music!
no better music than that of classical it is inspirational how these musicians composed for every instrument in a symphony and quartets and the singers nowadays get praised for singing other peoples tunes?? Leona Lewis?? A pile of old fart if you ask me!
I'm sure you did. We just went over it in my music history class, and it'll more than likely show up in a listening quiz or on our midterm. Hopefully your class was laughing at the end like mine. And if you're a music major like me, then it makes it a million times more fun.
I Love this piece! I studied it in music history and just fell in love. It truly is a 'Joke' to those who get the humor in it! Good job folks. Keep up the music making!
I love this piece. Thanks for the upload.
