  • dude looks like he just came out of the shower lol

  • I have seen buddy play live twice and I actually talk to him and got his autograph at disney land in the 70's. It was awesome.Bob Crane from Hogans heroe's was there too. He played drums. Something I didnt' know.

  • @holdernash Bob Crane actually was drumming in an episode of hogans heroes where the rest of the crew was playing music to try and trigure an avalanche on a nearby mountain, i didnt know it was him actually doing the drumming though.

  • @1234captron Wait a minute dude. You're saying John Bonham of Zep sucked on drums and Travis Barker sucks too? Umm better put down the crack pipe. Bonham is widely recognized as probably the best drummer of all time. Travis Barker carries the spirit of progress on the kit to new levels of excitement and accomplishment. Better stop riding Rich's jock into outer space & stuff because you're delusional! You think Rich hunched over the snare doing double stroke rolls for two hours is bad ass?

  • @JoeJacari First off, fuck you. Buddy Rich not only wasn't able to read music, but he also had no training on his instrument. So in that sense, yes, I think a big band leader, and one of the most widely respected jazz drummers who had those set backs was a bit of a badass.

Secondly, Don't compare musicians. It doesn't work. To each musician his own style.

  • @JoeJacari Jon Bonham the best drummer of all time HAHAHAHAHA, what a fucking joke. I'd love to see Bonham play a samba at about 100 bpm, or a bossa nova.

Travis Barker just tries to fit as many notes as he can and flail his arms around expending about three times as much energy for playing drums as he needs to. If you call that good I'd like to have some of what you're smoking.

  • @JoeJacari New levels of excitement and accomplishment. Hahahahah dude you should hop off of Barker's cock, please.

So you think Barker bending over doing double stroke rolls on every single piece of his kit for two hours is bad ass?

Oops. Looks like you ruined your own argument.

  • OKay, I went to several TRAVIS Barker tunes, Doesnt hold a candle to Buddy, No soul, No groove, Just speed, Buddy grew up when jazz drummers were growing, Travis is all speed, No groove, With alot of lighting he comes off cool,To Me, Dave Weckl is the only person close to Buddy in todays age

  • THE BEST, saw him twicw, Smoked a joint with him once..I knew owner of local drum shop that was great friends with buddy, The 3 of stood behind a music hall in ??????????? ,, Best moment of my life..

  • You think it can't get any better and then BOOM...... Key change up a whole step. So insane.

  • SAW THE MAN TWICE. 1969 W/ SARA VAUGHN AND HIS DAUGHTER SINGING "THE BEAT GOES ON" NEXT IN 73. HE SET THE BAR!!!

  • my jazz band plays this :)

  • @dawsonn007 mine too

  • he has an awesome voice

  • Where's the third trombone player? Probably fired right on stage haha or the bus....

  • nice goin' Buddy, real nice goin!

  • LaBarbera is a beast!

  • Our Jazz Band was at a clinic at SVSU. My clinician was an older guy, Rick Culver, who had played in this band with Buddy Rich. I remembered this because one of the bands that was playing at SVSU that day was playing this song. He told me words I'll never forget. "I once played with Buddy Rich, who was known, inevitably, for being a complete, raging phsyco."

  • 7 people are idiots for actually hitting the dislike button!!! So much talent on that stage.

  • Freaking love this song. Doing it with my school swing band, probably the best and most enjoyable piece we've ever done.

  • Even in grainy mono this sounds great! Who needs 5.1 channel Dolby Digital? :)

  • I consider this one of Buddy Rich's best pieces he ever wrote! I love playing this song! Im sure he would have loved to hear someone else play his Pieces.

  • @Sundevildrummer17 He didn't write this. Joe Zawinul did. :P

  • @Sundevildrummer17 Actually, Joe Zawinul wrote it. But yes, it is an awesome tune. :)

  • the audio is a little weird in the video :( Does the left speaker work for anyone?

  • is this the origanal song right? buddy is not cover it.

  • I also highly doubt you high school jazz band does it better. Buddy Rich is the god of drumming even while dead. That Sax can rip it all day. The bone player rocks it. The trumpets can all hit notes higher than your 1st trumpet in band even knows. Buddy Rich=GODLY

  • R.I.P. buddy rich us drummers will always remember you your a legend

and we all know that you are jamming in heaven

we miss you buddy will never forget you :')

  • @m3t5f4n

    I really doubt that.

  • @m3t5f4n ..I suggest you stop eating the dog food and catch up with your psychiatrist. How old are you? 10?

  • @m3t5f4n I highly doubt that. Where do you go to school? :P

  • @m3t5f4n bullshit

  • @m3t5f4n ARE YOU STUPID< I CANT BELIEVE IT<<NO PERSON LET ALONE MUSICIAN WOULD SAY THAT<<YOU ARE A WANNA BE< GET BACK TO US AFTER YOU HAVE MATURED AND PUT 40 YEARS OR MORE UNDER YOURE BELT

  • The video looks like an oil painting

  • At this tempo, I feel really sorry for the lead bone player.

  • @TheCatholicBoat That could be REALLY badly misunderstood lool :D XD :D XD

  • this song is awsomme

  • My audio plays this as a right channel mono.

  • Darn, my audio would work for some reason with this video. Any one else?

  • I wish they had Jaco on bass in this tune.

  • I love this in my high school band. Great song to play and always love for me and my trumpets to hit double Es.

  • Me and my band play this song at gigs all the time and we get bored of it and this is a great arrangement that he made

  • @fluffyfro101 IF YOU ARE BORED< YOU AINT DOING RIGHT

  • I love how the soloist finishes his solo. He says what he has to say and ends his solo FANTASTICALLY!!!!

  • the bad audio is distracting from the musical brilliance :(

  • the saxophone looks like its burning

  • i wish my boyfriend got that sweaty

  • @TheApplepie131

If your boyfriend always performed in a polo neck woolly sweater - I expect he would get that sweaty ;-)

  • @TheApplepie131 for porn?

  • @Drumr4Jesus

Orchestral drums and ensembles & combos and stuff...I get it. I know what you mean. Rudiments, jazz flurries, continental breakfasts, hors d'ouevres, all-you-can-eat buffets, wine, cocktail parties with a green olive in the glass, mid-century contempo designed furniture, James Bond movies, Gold Finger, Barry Goldwater, Tupperware, blond haired golden California beach chicks, Gilligans Island, Flipper, etc.

I get all that B. Rich schmaltz.

    I'm talking T. Barker.

  • I like Pat LaBarbera's solo. Its really good!!

  • Comment removed

  • Travis Barker the legendary Jazz drummer.... right?

  • @TosaDill WWWWWWWTTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • @MAPLEGUNZXX It's sarcasm...

  • @TosaDill oh whopps lol

  • @hobes9

Dude, you remind me of someone who's new to the game bra. Look, you're probably a nice guy. You may want to go to college and take a few drum classes and what have you. I don't know. You may be a flute player or something.

Hey, Travis Barker rules the drum universe now. No, not even Bonham could take TB. Bonham is a bad a** and stuff. What have you and whatnot but Bonham was a triplet master not a corps snare drum master like Barker.

Quit riding Rich's jock strap dude.

  • @JoeJacari Dude barker really wasn't that great at drum corps and stuff yo I've seen his stuff and really i wasn't that impressed. He tried out for some drum corps and didn't even make it on his age-out year, I know drummers that made it in 96 (blue devils the band he tried out for) and beat him.

He's good, yes, but I would never hold him on a pedastule

  • @JoeJacari Dude barker really wasn't that great at drum corps and stuff yo I've seen his stuff and really i wasn't that impressed. He's good, yes, but I would never hold him on a pedastule.

Check Terry Bozzio, Mike Mangini, or-hell-Aaron Gillespie.

  • @JoeJacari You want rudimental drumming? Compare the Blue Devils Ditty to Travis's so called "snare playing." Travis is just a celebrity and doesn't have much talent. He's WAAAAYYY overrated. People like Buddy Rich invented a new style of drumming that, by the way, Travis and every other serious drummer since has learned from. Buddy made drumming the center of the band and not just the time keeper. Before you come on saying how good someone is you better be able to back that claim up

  • @JoeJacari BONHAM WAS NOTHING< SAW ZEP 2 TIMES< HE WAS JUST LOUD

  • @JoeJacari @JoeJacari your suck a fuckin main stream faggot, and you obviously know nothing about real drumming. what are you going to say next, barkers better then john bonham. your a retard, shut up

  • this piss-ant moron travisBrulzz and all the other dick-brains that are raving about this no talent travis guy are only trying to get everybody riled up. just ignore the prick and he will go away.

  • this song is so bad it mad my sister cry :D

  • @Mw2M4oA3 Learn what good music is, this. At least it 100% real and not auto tuned.

  • To think, he still had energy to play after west side story!

  • buddy rich and travis barker both have one thing in common....they both loved to drum :)

tbh, buddys grandson nick rich actually has more in common with travis than buddy does.

they both look similar appearence wise, they both drum to new-style bands....:)

  • @gabbalabbawoop

on a technical level Buddy and Travis are similar in that they both use basic technique to create not just grooves chops and solos but entire works of music out of the set. when you can master rudiments and basic techniques the way they did (or any where near for that matter) you can do ANYTHING behind the drums. Its all about the homework, yes feel and ideas ect. do matter but having good technique lets u take one idea and turn it into a million

  • @keepdrummin7 very true, i didnt think of it that way :)

yes, i suppose that in a way they are similar, but they are both from different generations of drummers, so they both have skills and styles that was the mainstay of their generation i think.

but you msut admit, watching some of buddys stuff, he does have a certain edge over travis, if only in different musical styles :)

  • @gabbalabbawoop

No doubt! Buddy had a stage presesnce that wud give u goose bumps

  • @keepdrummin7

absolutely! and he had a temper to match, but at the same time he could be as nice as anything, and even make you drinks if he was in a good mood :)

  • Thank you for these uploads. I loved hearing all those drummers on Burning for Buddy, but I haven't always had much luck finding recordings of Buddy playing the songs.

  • @Reaper2k his videos are good, but some of his really good stuff is on his albums he did.

if you can find "mercy, mercy, mercy" ....the lvie one....his version of "channel one suite" is top notch!! :D :D

  • and another thing....Stevie Wonder. You wouldn't dare mention him as a drummer in the same breath as Buddy Rich, but guess who played drums on Superstition, one of the most iconic and identifiable drum grooves of all time? Does that make one better than the other? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • ...was often criticized for showcasing his massive technique over artistry. I want you to name one song, ONE SONG, that has been forever identified with Buddy Rich. You can't, can you? Yet millions of people all over the world could name you entire albums worth of songs that Barker was involved in. They are different artists. There is no intelligent reason for comparing these two, or any two really. You'd be just as retarded trying to compare Ringo Starr to buddy.

  • Buddy Rich is not intrinsically inherently BETTER at drumming than Travis Barker. Technically speaking, Buddy is the master. Stylistically, Travis has his own thing. They are not COMPARABLE like fucking athletes running down a race track. I get so tired of people trying to compare artists. It's ART YOU FUCKHOLES. There is NO subjective standard by which an artist may be compared to another. Both have toured with famous bands to millions of people. Buddy never wrote a song in his life...and

  • @Treebot1 well , some ppl reckon barker is better than buddy technically, thats why they get pages of abuse , obviously the ones with their head up barkers ass.

  • why the hell would you even mention travis barker in the breath as the legendary buddy rich you guys are idiots go learn about real music barker sucks ass compared to the legend that is buddy rich bow down to him don't disrespect him by comparing him to travis barker

    lol ridiculous

  • look, buddy has been on top of the drumming worlds radar for well over half a century, this whole travis argument will die down once the 1.5 generations of fans gives up its futile argument. travis and his band made music for angsty teenagers, buddy made standards that are still played today decades after they were written.

  • yeah i dont get it either...mindless idiots with no musical talent or knowledge would claim travis is better....but when it comes down to it, buddy gigged with the BEST for 40+ years....travis played with morons who knew what would sell...no comparison....

  • the fact thatpeople like buddy survived so long without the new world order hype machine and what we are supposed to listen to is a milestone.Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr don,t compare at all.

  • what's wrong with video?!

    There is no sound!!!!

  • In my opinion Travis is an awsome drummer I really love the way he plays, I even have his stick bag and I had his sticks a couple of years ago but this argument is stupid cause Travis himself would tell you (as the excelent drummer that he is) that he is no way near as good or as fast as buddy. I mean besides the fact that their styles are different buddy is a legend and travis is just a really good and famous drummer.

  • What a great band this was. Saw this band in October of '69. Had Richie Cole on alto like this band, but had Don Menza on tenor. Followed West Side Story with Channel One Suite. What a concert! Always loved the ending to his Mercy Mercy. Buddy pointed out to a guy in the audience that he was single sticking on his solos and not buzzing as the guy had accused him of doing. Funny!

  • @travisbarkerbitch so saying Travis is the best on every buddy rich vid will make him the best??? Fag

  • the one song written proving white people can groove, is proved the opposite by this arrangement

  • buddy and his great band.Always remembered .The big bands are great and I grew up in the so called time of heavy metal .Prefer light plywood myself as it is easier to wotk with

  • Interesting Mercy, Mercy arrangement.

  • I wish i could have seen Buddy Rich play live hes amazing

  • Upon the whole topic of Buddy Rich vs. Travis Barker, I don't think Buddy Rich and Travis Barker can be compared at all. Instead of saying one is better than the other, a more rational approach would be to say that they are both extraordinary players in the type of music that they play. Comparing them is like comparing Slash to Grant Green.

  • You've got to be kidding!! Travis Barker is not in the same species as Buddy Rich. Buddy Rich never learned to do what he did...he just did it. And did it until he was 69 years old. No freeking comparison!!

  • This is the most Caucasian version of this song ever. I prefer Ike Turner on keyboards at Montreaux.

  • travis barker is faster 1 hand then thsi retard

  • @scopions84 tell me, do you know something of music or drums in particular. Go search some buddy rich solos, learn the basis about the basic drum rudiments en then come back and judge again.

  • @scopions84 FUCK! YOU! you must know absolutely nothing about drumming. speed is NOTHING compared to innovation and overall composition skill.

  • @scopions84 are you fucking stupid?

  • John Madrid is standing in the lead chair position (based on Buddy's set-up), but Mike Price is playing the high note stuff at the end. I don't know who is actually playing lead throughout the song. They probably shared the book...they were both more than capable of doing so.

  • John Madrid is an animal! Damn could he play!

  • Nice mellow drumming.

  • Go Buddy, Go!

  • Buddy Rich is so regal with the audience. He's like "You want this tune? You sure?" And then he's like "Very well. If my people wish this tune to be played, then be played it shall."

  • the 70's were so innovative everyone was doing something new. And Buddy Rich was the name everyone wanted to have.

    Peace

  • Love it! I got a fever and the only prescription is more big band!!! Love the song too!

  • I have the Burning for Buddy CD and it is GREAT. This number sounds almost identical.

  • Buddy Rich is king. It's amazing how that very first hi hat lick completely conveys the feeling of the melody.

  • It's b/c it's fits the rhythm of the bassline. It fits better than the bassline actually being played...(it's not uncommon to hear that the exact same rhythm if the bassist believes in ghost)

  • where is the trombone player...........

  • Who is that on lead? it doesn't sound like Lin Biviano. Too tall to be him too.

  • Wayne Naus perhaps. . .maybe Jeff Stout. . .I believe they all 3 played together at one time. . .just a LONG shot guess....

  • I think this is from the same show as the "Buddy Rich 1970 solo"

  • Listen to that drumbeat starting at 5.47!!!

  • he seems like a pretty chill preformer

  • I've heard he was a cool guy.

  • Comment removed

  • @donottakeitseriously I've heard he actually paid Slingerland for his drums in sweaty towels.

  • He was one of the meanest Band leaders around. he was good but he was always watching.. there are many stories about how one of the horn players would do something wrong and he would fire them

  • Buddy Rick was probably the greatest big band drummer ever -- and he could NOT read music!!!!!! When the band would get a new chart, he would have the band play thru it one time, then play it a second time and he would add in the drum part that he created on the spot! What a talent! Not a particularly nice person (Johnny Carson used to cal him "Mr. Warmpth" for a good reason), but a great talent!

  • I like this temple better than his recording on the Mercy, Mercy, album! It grooves harder!

  • Is John Madrid on lead trumpet in this recording? That guy was a completely ridiculous trumpet player, and from what I gather, an amazing person in general.

  • Comment removed

  • same as lol

  • Way cool. Have a great gig!

  • Comment removed

  • Hey what happened to the other trombonist, did Buddy fire him?

  • @laurco Well, knowing Buddy, probably, but I'm not too sure.

  • Good for you !

  • What album can i find this on?

  • This is on Buddy's "Mercy, Mercy" album.

You can find it anywhere online - Amazon, Ebay, etc ~

  • Cheers man.

  • This arrangement sounds absolutely 1970's, and it's great :D

  • Hey has anyone noticed the two HUGE 100 watt half stack guitar amps just sitting unused on the stage? What is that all about I wonder? As far as this arrangement of Mercy Mercy goes I don't think much of it. Too many key changes in awkward places. It's my least favorite song of all the Buddy Rich stuff I've seen so far on utube. But these guy are tight in spite of it. RIP Buddy.

  • Man that's so weird, I could never imagine playing my kit with my hi hat lower than my snare

  • A bit of me died when Buddy left us back in 1987. God, I miss him.

  • pat

  • Great to see Buddy in such a great mood

  • favorite pep band song :D

  • h man das ist soooo gut!

  • my goodness buddy sweats 0.0 ... lol

  • I got to play this in jazz band.

    RIP buddy rich

  • is that pat labarbera playing tenor

  • GREAT!

    AWESOME!

  • Lol. That was great, and the begining was so funny!

  • SWEEET ASS TENOR SOLO

  • Modern drummers learn from the drummers of the past and Buddy himself noted Chick Webb, Jo Jones and Gene Krupa as his influences.

Its virtually impossible for everyone to agree 'who' is the best drummer or more modern, and we all should enjoy different drummers anyway as life would be pretty dull if we all liked the same stuff

If you read interviews from Gadd, Weckl, Vinnie, Phillips or Peart Etc

They all list Buddy as an influence so Buddy is in there somewhere in all their playing.

  • este man es muy blanco y gallego. Vaina tan deprimente y aburrida. with these is when I really feel like quitting, it makes drums look very stupid and insignificant. its depressing

  • Why is it that every time I see Buddy Rich compared to any drummer, he's compared to Travis Barker. Of all the drummers in the world, why him? They have absolutely nothing in common besides maybe height. A homeless guy kickin beats out on the street with a cowbell and trash cans would have more in common with Buddy than Travis, lol.

  • That's just teen pimple-faces fighting their little turf wars. If you got some extra time on your hands you can go on a Travis Barker vid and tell 'em Mickey Dolenz owns their guy. They're too young and stupid to get the joke and will flame and thumbs-down you. They're lucky it's only the internet. If they fought like that for real it'd be too easy to pick 'em off.

On to the real. 1970 must've been a banner year for Buddy, really at the top of his game. Too bad I was only ten at the time.

  • f someone had the nerve to mention that clown travis barker in the same sentence as buddy i would have to be restrained.

  • @stjohntheconqueror then you should probably restrain yourself, because you just did.

  • @stjohntheconqueror ... You just did...

  • @Thatguy301 THANK YOU!!!! its cause people don't know the right drummers...

  • that sax solo puts all of mine to shame

  • no Soul in this version

  • such a good drummer.

  • the organist is insane! - and i love his hi-hat work

  • I don't know. Is a big band the vehicle to play a song invoking mercy from Above? And was Buddy Rich, though technically jazz's most proficient drummer, the right man for Zawinul's kind musical universe? As he could bully his band members so terribly, I wonder.

  • this video is amazing! My sister LOVES it!

  • Buddy Rich is awesome but I like Dave Weckl with the Buddy Rich Band and their version of this a lot better. I have heard Buddy's up tempo version of this and still like Weckl........just on this song.

  • At the slight risk of getting some thumbs down, i was just thinking the same thing. Just on this song, Weckl really suited it.

  • I took the risk on the thumbs down. Definitely not trying to disrespect Buddy at all....he is one of the best. Just liked the other version better.

  • haha. the one time buddy rich plays mellow, you guys dont like it.

    both versions are great

  • I have seen videos of him playing mellow stuff and he is incredible. I wish I had 1/4 the talent he has and I have played for 30 years. I'm just saying that to me the other sounded better....not just the tempo, but the band sounded tighter and Weckl was incredible......and no before you go there...I am not saying Weckl is better than Buddy.

  • I haven't really liked any of his albums where he's the bandleader, but others that he just plays on are much better

Don't blame the talent he began with. Talent only takes you so far and practice despite how much ability you begin with will take you much farther.

not everyone's a buddy rich fanboy

  • ya well This was done when Weckyl wakl was in Knickers -So, do you think maybe Buddy's choices of music Like Mercy Mercy, Birdland etc. were not Hip TO PUT these other artists in the mainstream ,Jazz AND FUSION WAS NOT as predominant in the early stages as now.. Buddy could sweep the floor if comparison has to be made ,w/ alot of drummers who came AFTER this...Go see him Live ,. Oh well.. if you didnt Then you will never know , its PRESENCE...

  • zawinul is a genius

  • I like Krupa, but Buddy was the best .Mercy, Mercy, kicks Ass.

  • wow, he is a sweaty man.

  • Too that tempo WAY down, didn't he? Great tune, though.

  • Sounds like the band has road chops. Always a great band, but playing that full-on for Buddy night after night can wear a man down.

  • Best drummer ever.
