  • Yes, built in 1958 when we still built things! Now it's all made in China, Mexico or India - a bunch of cheap shit!!! Only my opinion. Thanks

  • I grew up in a town on Lake Huron and to this day I can't stand on its shores during a cold and windy November day without thinking of those poor souls on the Fitz and on all the other lake boats we've lost over the years. R.I.P.

  • yes lake erie the smallest of the five great lakes is the deepest beleive it or not. Its crazy how these great lakes sre just as deadly as the pacific and atlantic ocean. And ive lived in michigan my whole life and every part about it is beautiful, I dont appreciate our neighbors Ohio and wisconsin talking shit about us because there not the greatest either esspecially ohio. Ohio is more nigger than michigan BITCH

  • @walker7261981 erie is not the deepest it is the shallowist of all the great lakes !

  • @walker7261981 Lake Erie is not the deepest of the great lakes. It is the shallowest and smallest of the great lakes . Its deepest hole is 210 ft.

  • @walker7261981 What is your problem? Can't you just enjoy the video without trying to argue over non-sense. The whole upper Midwest is under appreciated ....does that make you feel better now?

  • isnt one of the great lakes very very deep?

  • @dodgedart74 mhm

  • @dodgedart74 superior is the biggest and deepest of the great lakes

  • @bde1963 thank you. ill never orget now, lake superior is superior to the rest.

  • Back when America built stuff we were proud of, makes me wish our country would return back to an Industrial powerhouse. The edmund fitzgerald was obviously the pride of the men who built her in river rouge.

  • As sad as that moment was when the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald came, it is also good to know that those men are with God and not at the bottom of the that ice water mansion called Gitchigumi.

  • The Fitzgerald was a striking vessel.

  • At 0:16 if you look just right of the Fitzgerald, you can see the hull of the Herbert C. Jackson which was launched one year after the Fitzgerald. I have a video of the Herbert C. Jackson's launch on my channel.

  • I was born, raised and live in the Eastern U.P. (a true yooper) I remember where I was when I first heard the song, and it chills me to this day.

  • @TunesNorth If we could cut off the UP. and detroit, Michigan would be a good place to live. Only problem is Canada dont want those 2 welfare sucking shitholes.

  • @Trashfished The UP is what makes Michigan beautiful. Makes it what it is. Even Detroit has it's good points. Remember, if there had been no Detroit there would have been no Michigan and by population alone the lower peninsula is a lot more of a welfare sucker than either the other two will ever be.

  • @auntbecky Have you been to Detroit lately??

  • Would the Edmund Fitzgerald still be in use today if it hadn't gone down in that storm ? When would they have retired it ?

  • I would bet the Fitz would still be sailing today had it not sank. There are ships still sailing today that were launched before the Fitz, including the Arthur M Anderson (launched in 52). I'm not sure what other factors come into play in determining how long a ship is in service, but age wise it doesn't seem like the Fitz would be too old.

  • Age would not be a factor. It all depends how well they took care of the ship. For example The St. Marys Challenger is over 100 years old and still sailing while The Tarauntu was not taken care of and was scrapped before it was 30 years old. So judging by how Columbia Transportation took care of their ships, the Fitzgerald would most likely still be sailing.

  • Since it is used only in fresh water, I imagine it would last longer.

  • the ship would still be sailing... The Arthur M. Anderson Is still used and it is older... as a matter of fact In early 2008 While Sailing to Huron, Ohio The Arthur M. Anderson became trapped in ice where it remained for 3 days before the coast guard could release her from the grasp of Old Man Winter

  • I was born Nov 17 1959 about one year after The Fitz was launched. I graduated naval Boot camp company 288 in Niov of 1977. They flew me and some other sailors back to Boston. I will always remember seeing the huge white caps over the GreatLakes at 35,000 ft. Being a mairner and living on Cape cod Iknow they had to be 35-50or60ft high.I will always feel a connection to the Great lakes and the Edmund Fitzgerald. I salute althose who were lost and their beloved ones left behind on this earth!

  • copy paste if you think that the dumb families should actually let people dive on the ship instead of letting it rot.

  • The henry ford is one of my favs

  • It's a shame that such a young ship had to go down. Now that I think about it many ships have gone down young. Waste of life and resources.
