It's something about Georgia I guess because most of our families came from the south to the north. South Carolina and Georgia are the main roots of our identity. I've loved this song since a little girl growing up in the Philadelphia streets thanks for the memories.
The coolest, classiest singer of the 50's. Yes, I've heard them all, including Elvis. I'm a huge Elvis fan, espeically on ballads & gospel. But, even I must admit he can't do justice to Brook Benton's songs.
Who ever wrote this song has feelings and put all the tight words together, I guess that's what they call soul, because that's where it comes from.. And Brook makes that come to life.
This song makes me glad to be alive. To feel. To hear. To be. God bless ya Brook...wherever you are I hope the sun is shinin' 'cause it's still rainin' all over this old world.

Heey Punkkid 4569, You just hang in there Son, Tough times don't last... Tough people do. You're probably being hardened for some bigger challenges down the road so suck em up, tough it out and don't let others decide who or what you are, cause they'll get it wrong every time. Many who act secure are more troubled than you they're just better fakers. Be real and set you own pace- not a role you see someone else imitating

@Bamaboompa capitalism isn't evil if it's also tempered by looking out for those who need a chance, a hand, some fairness and human decency. Unfortunately there are many greedy bastards for whom nothing will ever be "enough." They want your share, mine and also your kid's kid'...and by the way, they want a tax break they don't need or deserve and they want everyone else to pay for it. Idiotic and crazy....borrowing from the adults of the future to give rich people even more now!

This version sounds different from the other Brook Benton recording. The version I'm familiar with sounds a bit louder and the strings are more prominent. And I would chimes and a harmonica in the other version. It's like, this version has a softer instrumental track than the other version.

rainy night in reykjavik, candles on heat turned up the girls laughing and joking in the other room cat laying beside me and this tune playing softly to my tired ears... feels perfect :)
This is a fine recording, but it is not the studio version? Know how I know? In the studio version, it sounds like he starts with "HOOVERING by my suitcase" Hahahaha. Maybe he was doing some vacuuming???

Often a truly great song searches in vain for just the right artist. Not this one. Brook Benton is one of the great voices of all time, singing one of the great songs of all time.
still one of my favorite 100 songs ever. still remember the first time hearing this song when i was a kid xmas day 1969 riding in the car with my mother and the rest of the family.
@foodserver53 They are incapable of looking anywhere but down foodserver53 rap is the lowest form of music (if you must call it that) to ever come from African American culture. Songs of bitches and hoes and the wheels on their cars and killing cops? Sorry Rap is merely crap without the "C"
Brooks Benton is a great resource for, among other things, people who think Al Green is the beginning. He is not. Brooks Benton, is one of the artistic giants upon whose shoulders the great Al Green has stood upon.
For you rap fans, who cant appreciate the cultural environment of the 50's " Make me feel good Kiddio" is every bit as honest and bold as anything written today. I encourage you to isten to this BEFORE you decide to "look down" on those who preceeded todays artists.
Thanks for that. I DID think Al Green was the greatest but i am open to new suggestions and yours is good. First heard Al in 1973 but had not heard of Brook Benton then. But I am converted although who can sing Love and Happiness like Al Green?
@foodserver53 I am a rap fan, and I have a HUGE appreciation for the music/culture of the 50s ...There was no need to single & target a genre just to make your point, dear ...and understand that rap derives from 1960s Jamaican music (toasting) and West African storytelling (Griots) ...Perhaps you need to have a better appreciation for other genres/cultures - or at least some respect for cultural diversity
In '69, my best friend and I were hitching to Florida, from the Midwest. We arrived across the border in Kentucky, and the sky opened up. It rained buckets. We waited it out in a Standard Station. On the radio this song was playing. It was an Epiphany. It wasn't Georgia, but it was close.
Man, I wish you all could have heard him back in the '50s and '60s when he was young and poppin'! Man! What energy! What a voice he had! These later recordings don't capture what a great vocalist of the era he was!!
Love the song, but not this version. This version is way too "tinny" Brooke's voice in this version is NOT like it was on the original Cotilian label version. Also the violins and Brooke's voice at the 2:10 mark are NOT the same as on the original label.
There is a version of this song on youtube, I believe posted by mlibe(sp) which I believe sounds more like the original.
I rember hearing this in our family car while having to leave my grandparent's home in the country (fishing, hunting, eating fresh foods, boating, and so quite except for the wihpperwills(night birds) and laughter with other visting relativeswhere we had fun that most of the kids of today will never know. Sad how things have turned out in the public schools and their neighborhoods. The decline has been tremendous and primarily affecting those controlled ny money.
I'm one of the few ones who are commenting this who hasn't any upcoming memories while listening to this... as I think knowing this masterpiece from the "Taking' over the Asylum" funeral scene doesn't count.... I'm just too young. But it's a beautiful piece of music. Thanks for posting it.

Salve a Geórgia !!! Salve Brook Benton !!!
