@natosthan but with all the screaming Moon does I would have given her the same look. even if your fighting for revange (which I'm against) when it comes to the fight the screaming just shows you're too emotional and can't give your 100%. it make Moon looks like a drama queen. Flaying Snow, on the other hand, looks like a pro.
@nennie16noonah As opposed to what? Subtitles saying "You will die for killing master."? Seriously they are not saying enough for the dub to be bad. the only reason to like subtitles is if the acting is so bad its better not to look at an actors face when they deliver lines. I never watch anything with subtitles. its simply not any way to see a film. The only people who, like them are pretentious snots.
@lollipopfop woah. angry much? just merely expressing my opinion. its just that in wuxia films there is some horrific american actor overacting in their dub, or not putting any effort at all (in MY experiences). you dont have to watched subtitled stuff if you dont want to! not forcing you... and im not a pretentious snot thank you very much! i just prefer hearing the film in its own language instead of an awful english dub.
This movie is one of the best of Zhang Yi-Mou, the narrative structure is brilliant, some fighting scenes are repeated, but in a different colour (because it was told by a different person from a different perspective). This movie isn't meant to be realistic at all because as you're watching, they're only (mis)(re)presentation of the narrators. Bear in mind that this entire movie is actually from a single conversation between the King and Jet Li.
Even the English translation of names ruined the beauty of this movie (Flying Snow & Moon), which is unfortunate, linguistic/cultural differences limit the translation of aesthetics.
Movie criticism is not for the stupid, the ignorant, or the lame. Do not try it without first consulting trained professionals.
Beyond that, Hero is one of my all time favorite movies. I saw it before moving to South Korea. I've been in Asia for over six years and can say that Hero does not yet have an equal in its class. This film is not for Western audiences, for they do not understand the culture in which this is set. Students of Asian history, literature and culture have a basic foundation
well this part is suppose to be "not realistic" because Jet Li is bullshitting the Emperor...so it is a bunch of bullshit...everything is a bunch of bullshit Jet Li is making up...if you are talking about the whole thing in general...sure it is a movie and needs to bullshit its audience so it looks entertaining...
nope it is just called literature...for example if you go read a poem it will sound insane but it is actually alluding to something..here jet li is presenting the emperor with this bullshit in a very poetic way and of course the emperor found out about it...plus this movie is not directed by ang lee so...yea...
@astro533 but ... who cares if it's not very realistic? It's very beautiful, and in Naruto, it looks even more fake when they jump around in the trees and being in the air for like minutes and not landing ..
@astro533 Its very realistic. This is exactly how it looks when two scarlet robed women have an epic fight to the death in a leaf strewn field. Where have you been? Why doesn't your cap key work? And what the heck is "sumthing"?
@lollipopfop i dont get how its realistic. they're like floating and fighting at the same time. her swords were fast but everything else is like slow mo. LOL. i understand the scene but it just seemed abit cartoonish.
yup she just went all camp cut a hoe on her while flying around. also is it just me which it probably is but dosent moon look plain retarded when she first attacks.
Are there any true martial artists left? Ones who don't use this wire aided flying bullshit?? Seems to me they don't even believe in their own discipline any more as it is when seen performed realistically.
@DiGiTaLdAzEDM There are still plenty of martial artist out there. This film is categorized under the genre called "Wuxia". Think of it more as a fantasy based rather than reality. If you want to see more realistic fighting scenes, do not watch the majority of films set in Ancient China as most of them will have this type of fighting. Wuxia is a big part of Chinese pop culture.
@trancequility Aye, its an ancient Chinese counterpart for modern American superheroes and sci-fi. Wuxia is about myths and shit. I dont see why would people say this is "unrealistic" and yet Batman, Ironman, Spiderman, X-men and so forth are fine. Its no different other than Wuxia as a genre is like 2000 years old and is (was) more about the moral aspect rather than senseless action.
@Buuub08 At least it follows common rules and is logical within those boundaries. Unlike some 'superhero' movies where the common sense of an ant might occasionally be all there is to their so called reality.
And nobody ever said that it was historical, accurate material.
First time when I saw a fight excerpt from this movie I was like 'wtf theyre fuckin flyin lolololo', but hey, I watched the entire movie then and I must admit it's rly pretty good. A truly great climate and beautiful music.
I'm love this movie, this scene, but would much prefer the original Mandarin, with English subtitles. Asian movies always play better in original languages. I''m a 62 y/o Caucasian Texas cowboy, who does not speak Asian languages, but deeply respect them.
Zhang Yimou is the greatest film director of all time, in my opinion. "Hero" is one of the greatest artist movies ever.
this was a beautiful scene they captured..how the way the use snows movements to combine with the wind and leaves even to mentioning both how there hair flows in the wind.....its jsut to beautiful along with the song
@furro69 Yup, Dubbing is pretty stupid and confusing. I bet ya, 100 years from now someone pick up this film in English and goes hey the Chinese speak English. :D God would lhao.
This scene was great as for the prior negative comments, you guys are just dumb!!! "moving postcard" common now and "Leave it to the men" you are also dumb you obviously haven't seen this
It's not boring because they're women. There are plenty of fantastic movie fights featuring women. It's boring because the director was too obsessed with creating a moving postcard to choreograph a proper fight for them. All the fights in this film suck, bar the first one.
Well if all you want are fights, you could easily watch any B-movie out there. Its obvious Yimou Zhang didnt have 'anohter fight' in mind when doing this. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but focusing solely on the fights in this movie will let you down, as that is not the directors goal.
How can you not focus on the fights when there are so many of them? It's a martial arts movie, wudan mythology. Take the fights away and there barely IS a story.
Of course the fights are part of the movie, and an important part, but they are not the movies focus but the framework.. But, as you say yourself, the fights are highly choreographed, stylistic and unbelievable from a 'realism' point of view. They are part of the postcard as you put it, the postcard (being the film in total) is more important than the exact nature of fight choreography. Hence they might 'suck' (such an elegant term) if fights is all you want, but not otherwise.
Hero's story was completely threadbare. The plot was just alternate iterations of the same characters fighting one another. Since the characters changed personalities with each re-telling of events, I felt absolutely no connection with any of them and cared little about what they were fighting for. All that sustained my interest were the visuals. It was like watching a pompous ballet that substituted wires and swords for pointe shoes.
Now I'm not particularly fond of ballet, but if the sets and costumes are bold and the choreography is spectacular, then I won't complain...too much. See what I'm getting at here? If the fights in Hero had been less poncey wire work and more dangerous and exciting then I would've judged it better for what it was; a martial arts ballet.
coming from a martial artist turned ballet dancer, i think that there is a story within the movement it's self. not all stories are told through spoken dialog. movement is the most elemental form of comunication. personally that is what i appreciate about this stylized form of movement.
Yes certainly there SHOULD be meaning in the movement. But point it out to me in this scene. Aside from Maggie's glacial poise, and Ziyi's angsty aggression what is the purpose of watching the 2 women float about in a distracting flurry of leaves? The languid pacing of the fight does not convey the emotional weight behind it. There's no real feeling, or worry, that at any moment one of the characters might die.
one might argue that that is the point, seeing as this whole scene is a fabricated lie that jet lee's character told to trick the king, which the king, after this, commented on how melodramatic this story was and how it was unlikely to be true.
That might be an argument for this scene in particular, but the fights in the blue version of the story were just as flamboyant, most notably the fight on the lake, which looked so ridiculous I almost laughed. The white story again was too full with over dramatic pauses and sombre slow motion sequences.
The whole movie was melodrama of the highest form, cinematography for it's own sake. There was nothing tangible about it.
