@gardeningireland Try Googling 'gasing'. This is a traditional Malaysian top, where one type of contest involves the longest spinning time.

It's a small metal top with a tapered coil-spring underneath and a special spring-loaded winder. It was very inexpensive, but now I've lost it and am looking for another.

It's a 'rattleback'. Its shape only allows it to spin in one direction. And the explanation is beyond me...

It's a kind of gyroscope. You hold it to your mouth and blow into a hole in the rim, causing an internal 'turbine' to spin faster and faster. It sounds as if I'm having an asthma attack. Then the inside continues to spin for a couple of minutes.
