By far the best use of the Sontarans and the best written, acted and the whole story was better. It is a shame that all later stories have tainted them.
@Davros47able Then who is your favorite Doctor? and what is your favorite Dr who story ever? and favorite Dr who villains?
I'am a big Dr who fan my favorite Doctor is Peter Davison and Dr who storys are The Caves of Androzani and Daleks and my favorite villains are the Daleks.
@mjwwes Not all of it. Have you seen the complexity of some of the scripts? I don't really expect a 10 year old to fully appreciate the story in Talons of Weng Chaing...
I am a bigger fan of the new series, but this was the best Sontaran episode of the old. It was a great idea that they set it in the Middle Ages and had the aliens manipulate humans in a less sophisticated time.
The Sontaran Experiment's problem was that it was too short, The Two Doctors' problem was that it fed into the inconsistancies of doctor #2, and Invasion of Time's problem was everything. Although seeing a Sontaran trip over pool furnature was priceless.
It always amazes me that film and TV aliens are proportionate in size to humans. There must be some cosmic rule of the universe that all life forms have a height between 4' and 6'5. It would be funnier to see Lynx step out of his starship, revealing himself to be 10 inches high. Irongron then uses him as a doorstopper.
I once saw a production photo that was obvioulsy taken on location between shooting - it was a photo of the Sontaran relaxing between shooting - sitting on a deck chair, legs crossed holding a pair of sunglasses and smoking a ciggie! After seeing that it has taken all the mystiqaue away! LOL!
@djorcks95 It's one of the few Dr Who stories that stands up well as a television drama in its own right. Great stuff - Talons and Androzani, Inferno and City of Death are my favourite Whos.
"Time Warrior" gets my vote as the most fun-to-watch DrWho ever. The villans Irongron, Blood Axe and the Sontaran warrior Linx have great lines and almost steal the show! Jon Pertwee looks his classiest and is having a blast as the Doctor. Last and definitely not least, Sarah Jane Smith arrives in DrWho like a hurricane. Sarah Jane tangling with Irongron, while first thinking the Middle Ages are a village pageant, is funny enough to watch over and over.
Naff scenery-well I suppose footage filmed in a wood must be-those look like real trees to me!
Bad acting-not true-David Dakers is a good actor-may over-act his role-but this is childrens Tv-I remember that other bad actor Tim Piggot Smith and a host of other RSC actors plying their trade in Dr Who during the 70s-also good plots-perhaps Weatherlawyers comments should be directed at Star Trek from the 60s.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Urgh!
Flipping idiot, I am, I just watched it again.
Fancy showing the dreadful costumery in close-up. Now I won't sleep because I can't forget the image of a time traveller wearing cheap motor cycle gloves.
And I thought the doorway was ill fitting!
Gee golly gosh!
Some good news is that the proposed new porn law might make the vinyl clothing harder to come by. Not that the BBC will ever be stuck for supplies of shoddy BSDM-ware.
Ignore the troll duerdenn. His idea of a good actor is probably Wesley Snipes.
He also seems completely unaware that the writer of this episode wrote for Play for Today, and has had his dialogue compared to that of Dennis Potter.
Good lord. Attacking Old Who for its limited special effects, sets and costumes, has always been the argument of those with limited intelligence.
Script and acting are far more important, and the Time Warrior has than in abundance. The actors here all have RSC experience, and the script was written by Robert Holmes.
Although some Dr Who episodes from the 70s suffered from cheap sets/special effects the script writing/actors could never be doubted..check Warriors of Mars,Genesis of the Daleks or The Talons of Weng Chung-superb stories&acting-David Dakers in this episode..Tim Piggot Smith-is he a bad actor!!!-in others-Weatherlawyers just jealous of Linxs good looks!!!
Yeah I agree totally. And two of those episodes you just listed were written also written by Robert Holmes. Daker and Piggot Smith are excellent actors, and so is Kevin Lindsay (who plays Commander Linx). The actor who played Boba Fett in Star Wars also appeared in this episode.
Oh, and 'Warriors of Mars' is actually 'Pyramids of Mars'.
@FieldMarshal07 : Completely agree. Oh, for the days when sci fi programmes had to rely on good writing, rather than special effects! They don't make them like they used to in the 60s and 70s.

The latter.
But shows discernment in his TV viewing tastes, if not in his You Tube choice.
At least I know enough not to travel in time or space with an ill fitting costume and ill fitting portal on my vehicle.
If I am going to be twiddling little dials secreted about my person I'd have the sense to wear something a little superior to vinyl gloves.
Also I'd like to be able to read the numbers on the dials. There's nothing so bad as having your helmet dig into you as you search for number 11.
