Let's see, where to begin? A) Bobby has a thyroid condition, so weight control is not within his power. (B) He was playing one of Maynard's charts virtually note for note. So, my response to trumpsahead is "you try it".
I hate to be cruel, but what he played was a very simple arrangement of a simple tune. The only difficulty was the high register, but should not be problematic for a pro. Certainly not an inspirational performance; maybe for a student to exhibit power in the high register, yeah.
But for a jazz institute, would be nice to hear some jazz.
Bobby is an stellar performer. Up there with Doc Severinsen. Sadly his artistry by definition has to be suffering from his shocking obesity. If only someone had cared enough about Charlie Parker to steer him away from drug abuse. Like on the show "Intervention", someone needs to rescue Bobby so we are able to cherish his music for many years to come. Who will step forward?
with all this fantastic jazz performed, how can you be going on and on about his physical appearance and not say one word about what a great musician this man is!? i really don't get you people.
Well said,but Bobby is at great risk with the weight.We wish him well and hope he lives a long,long time to teach his students at USC and contribute to LA Jazz Institute programs.
What happened to him? I remember seeing him in the 80's with Toshiko Akyoshi and his stomach was as flat as a board. People keep saying he has a disease, but what disease magically defies physics and adds huge amounts of weight without one gorging on mega-feasts?

@GOPeagle i gree.
It's Reality TV Fitness CrashDiet Time for ol' tubby.
He prolly doesn't have a comfortable day, poor Shamu.
Every DAY is a Brown Trouser Day for him, most likely.
Prolly cain't do a good yob of wiping himself nowadays.
He has a WOW high register, but he should care enough about himself to manage his health.
That being said, beautiful music from Bobby Shew.
