Yep, they can be harsh.. Get a hard-drive install or try the PC version. I was going to get the 360 version of this but ended up grabbing the PC version, I was pretty shocked at how quickly the screens went compared to Oblivion on 360 - this video is essentially me playing Oblivion. And crying.

I installed the disc on the 360 version. my longest load screen was 3 seconds. they are fairly short in my experience. they don't even bother loading the items or text.

The PC version of Skyrim has a lot of problems, but luckily load screens aren't one of them. Longest I've had is around 10 seconds and it's still not got annoying yet.
