They seem to have a "sweet" nature about them. Is this true of giraffes? I used to work as a volunteer in a wild animal sanctuary and there were some animals that you could never really trust. It looks like you have such a great bond with these magnificent creatures. Their eyes look right into you, don't they.
@PaintedRavensong Giraffes can be quite sweet, calm, & deliberative about the actions they take. But not necessarily. The ones you see me standing closest to or kissing were at one time bottle-raised, so they were VERY gentle & bonded to people. (That large one liked people better than the other giraffes--when in heat, she actually would back up to us, which could be disconcerting) The rest of the herd, especially the bulls, would've taken my head off if I ever tried to stand too close to them.
@Alzbeti8 Youtube muted my video for copyright issues, so I had to unfortunately switch out the song. It was quite a blow to me because I had synced many of my photos to the Maniacs' song & plus that song is very good (something I can't say about the replacement) --Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Thanks for the comment.
i work at the toronto zoo, and we have 3 giraffes there but our male is only about 17 ft. in length, im assuming that is quite short for a male, did you know the length of your males?
I really don't know anything about this particular song. Youtube took down the audio of my original video until I replaced it with one of their songs. You'll find it in their music selection.
they actually make a sound like a lamb. but there necks are so long that they cant get a sound out so the only time they can make a sound is when there smaller. look on my page under my favorite. i think its called 'myth crew giraffe sound' or something like that
They are pretty much silent. They'll grunt or groan straining themselves, but that isn't a sound they are trying to make. It's the same sort of sound you or I might make if we strained ourselves.
They are exceptionally silent. I have heard them do a gutteral grunt/groan straining themselves, but that's the closest to any sound I can ever recall hearing them make.
It was a great job. Yes, I like photographing wildlife quite a bit. I have lots more photos to upload onto youtube as soon as I get the time to assemble them into a video. Wildlife photography can be challenging, but the rewards are great when all the elements magically come together. Thanks for the nice comment. :)
It's located in central Florida, but it no longer has exotic animals like it used to. I haven't gone back there in years because it just isn't the same park that it used to be. :( The closest thing around here to this park is Walt Disney's Animal Park in Orlando or Busch Gardens in Tampa.
Giraffes are exceptionally quiet, but they do occassionally snort through their noses making a noise of sorts. And they can grunt & groan if really exerting themselves. I like the daycare shot the most myself (that's why I made it the video's icon image). :) Thanks for the nice comment.
Yes. From many years ago. I'm also in my primate video, my ratite video, & my profile shot. The rest of the stuff I have up thus far, I'm behind the camera instead of in front of it. I feel more comfortable that way.
Hmmm, I'm not sure what you're talking about. At 3:11 that's an adult bull giraffe and those bumps on its face are normal bony growths just beneath the skin much like its horns. Just after that shot it shows babies from different angles bending over to eat. It's difficult for them to reach down, so they have to stretch out their legs. They have valves in the blood vessels of their neck to help prevent passing out if they raise their head too quickly.
Beautiful pictures. Have you gone back to see the giraffes? I wonder if any of the ones you looked after are still living. Not sure of their life span.
I went back 5 or so years later and they all were still there. But later on the animal park went under new ownership for the umpteenth time, and most of them were sold around the country. They generally live around 30 to 40 years. I do know that the giraffe you see me bottle-raising has become a prolific mother over the years.
Nature has a video explaining the sounds made by giraffes, which is outside and deeper than the range of human hearing, but better for carrying over distances in the wild. When they throw back their head and open their mouth they create a sound, perhaps using a simple language like other herd animals. Listening giraffes will stop moving and turn toward the direction of the sound. If giraffes didn't communicate with each other, they would not be as well suited to survive in the wild.
I know, but they're the remains of the common ancestors' antlers. Apparently. They also attract lightning, but giraffes usually survive being struck, fortunately!
You sound like me at your age. I wanted to become an exotic animal vet also. Study hard. And good luck with it. It really is possible to make your dreams come true. :) I heard about this job, not thinking I would ever have an opportunity like this, and a week later I got the job.
Thank you for sharing your fantastic observations...great presentation; enjoyed it very much! Giraffes are so majestic, graceful and gentle, although have been told they can be quite aggressive at times (?) Look forward to viewing your other submissions!
Thanks for the comments. As for the aggression, the males liked to hold their ground. Once while I was standing too close to a female, the bull gave me a warning kick stopping the hoof just an inch from my face. I stepped back and all was cool again. Considering what they are capable of doing, I found them remarkably restrained, but we were careful not to push our luck.
Wow, that was an excellent video!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing. Giraffe's are my favorite animal. Have been since I was 2. I am 13. I collect giraffe stuff. I'd take a kiss for anything. It must be sooo nice. I bet ya it's amazing. You were so close to them. Thankyou so much, it was a very good video.
Thanks ladybug for the kind words. :) The previous commenter was a mother of a 2 yr old that says her kid is already obsessed with giraffes. They really are wonderful animals.

That was so cool! i wanted to be a vet for many years of my life, but the thought of having to put an animal down made me change my profession haha. You were looking pretty hunky there with them giraffes ahha they are so fun to haha
Yeah, I really wanted to be a vet, too, for a loooong time. But this job was much better than being a vet could ever be,... except for the pay. :( But giraffe kisses are worth more than money. :)
