IMO, there were at least 3 dozen other actresses who could have done this part better than Winslet; unfortunately, the same small group of actresses get hired for these so-called "prestige pictures" which is basically schlock that gets pushed for Oscar. Really great movie. Touching on so many levels. Just shows how the Germans were so ready to hang their crimes on a few, and blame it on the Nazis, who of course are not the Germans that survived the war. The bad germans suddenly all became good germans after the war ended.

But doing it through the old old theme of the Holocaust is tedious. And the characters are too dark, in a dark age, with a dark end .. too dark.

There's no contrast of light in the darkness, or someone cheerful, frank, or innocent, all the characters seems tortured, is absurd.

I don't understand why he didn't stand up in court and say something when Hanna admitted guilt to cover her secret. Its based on the book from Bernhard Schlink "Der Vorleser" and I never get whats the author wanted to 'say' to us: The readers.

It sure is! This is the best movie I've seen since 2001's "In the Bedroom". You go into it thinking it's about one thing, and it turns out to be something else entirely. Kate Winslet most deservedly won the Oscar for her wonderful performance here. The young German actor David Kross was excellent. Ralph Fiennes played his morose self as usual. It is a telling film about human nature. What a spellbinding film.

I don't see it as a Holocaust Film, but it was has many different themes, from the superficial leading to more deeper themes. It would be good, for one to watch the entirety of the Special Features on the DVD Format.

This movie, definitely will be one of my Long-Time Favorites, and too bad it didn't win Best Picture.

I watched both this weekend.

The film had mixed reviews because Jews hate it. It's a Holocaust film in which Nazis aren't represented as cartoon monsters and nightmare bogeymen.

Can't let the Goyim feel any sympathy for a Nazi, or represent Jews as anything but 100% vindicated victims-- much too dangerous.

The final scene has hints of ambiguity that are simply not kosher, so no Best Picture Oscar for you.

Winslet is astonishingly good.
