Left, Right And Centre dates from December of '75, which completely blows my mind- it sounds so much like late Jam, early Style Council. Funny that they've kept their pre-punk roots so deeply buried! I don't see what they have to be ashamed of; I find it totally fascinating, there should be an official release of these early archives.
Think there was an early demo of Got By In Time, not sure when it was cut though.
I've read somewhere that Left, Right and Centre and I Got By In Time were recorded on 28th May 1976 along with Soul Dance, but i think you're right, i believe these were played live many times before they were recorded, as were many Jam songs.
What about top tunes like "A man of great promise". I don't like all council tunes but I think that may be an 80's production thing in part. I've seen him play some non favourite TSC tunes just acoustic and more often than not they stack up - which is usually a good measure of a well writen song.
I wanna cover this when i'm finally able to get my rnb/rock n roll band together, being a hardcore Weller enthusiast. Reckon Duffy should cover this as well tho, be an absolute smash if she did! :) Keep The Faith ;)
Excellent footage and compilation !

In the beginning there was nothing. God said, 'Let there be music!' And then there was Weller.

It's amazing to hear this. When The Jam (and TSC) went into more soul/r&b influenced stuff, it wasn't that great a leap at all.

Recorded May 28th, 1976 at Bob Potter's studio, on one of Joe Meek's old 4-track machines (and Fairchild compressor, more importantly!)
Who is playing piano? The short-lived pianist Bob Gray?
What is that strange Japanese Rickenbacker copy Weller's playing at 2:28? So many questions, so little answers! This is a very cool tune.....

Aha! I was just looking at a book of bizarre '60s guitars and there was Weller's Rick copy: It's a Firstman "Baron", made in Japan circa '67-'69.

Was this the same session that spawned Left, Right and Centre and I Got By In Time?

I think Weller actually took a massive shit before this session....so little answers is right/

Nah, I think the massive shit came immediately after leaving The Jam!

I agree. The Style Council were shit.

Oh shut up - Are you the guy who stands at the front of his shows even now and shouts in the city after every fucking song - move on (up)

Actually his solo work is tops. I just hated his work with the Style Clowncil.
