I grew up with the Clancy brothers' and Tommy Makem's music. It's great to hear them do this Ewan McColl song, but I can't help but think they're turning up their Irish-ness a bit for the American audience ;-)
Great Irish group singing a great song, written by a man brought up in Lancashire and born to Scottish parents, about the herring fishermen setting out from the port of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk to find the "silver darlings". Although there are many differences, we also have much in common and I think we should celebrate that. Shoals of Herring has become a song beloved by fishing communities and people with fishing heritage all round the world, as well as people who just like the song.
American Irish owe so much to the four of these fine singers. They opened the door to Irish music and history to some of us.The rest of us had a lot of it already from mom & dad.I know my sister,2 brothers and I did.The Clancys & Tommy Makem are the soundtrack of my young life and bring back memories of family & friends. That is undeniable and irreplaceable.Thank you fellas. You are missed.Tommy Makem had a great place on E.57th St.in Manhattan. Many good nights listening to him & Liam.
As a student I was lucky to see them live at the Music Hall in Aberdeen in the late sixties and it is a real treat to enjoy their music again - none better!
OH man... I am brought back to my childhood... my Dad loved this group, and played their music constantly... I have watched so many of these on YouTube... man I miss my Dad... he's singing these in heaven I am sure...
I love that harp. On my trip through Ireland with a mandolin and harmonica I was very welcome. Both instruments were very scarce in de bar-jam circuit. I learned a lot those 3 months.
The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem ! Thanks for the songs, the grand times, and gving us Ireland first hand. We miss you. May the GOOD GOD hold you in His HAND forever.
Overall, the '84 reunion was sadly poor, but there were exceptions and this was one of them. It's great that Liam sort of became the driving force due to the age of his brothers, and I am so glad they did this tour, poor or no, as we have now lost Liam, the last of 'em.
I don't agree with you that the 84 reunion was poor at all. There is plenty of it on Youtube, thankfully, and I have no complaints about it at all.Imperfect at times? Yes - but none the less authentic for that. God bless the 4 of them. Lets hope every time we play to these videos they sit together somewhere and smile.
I love the Clancy Brothers but this version does not even begin to compare with Luke Kelly's. Luke was head and shoulders above every other singer i ever heard.
yes! memory kicked when i saw that! never saw mccoll/miller live but used to watch him on telly back in the day--'dirty old town' and all that--the late '50s /early '60s were great days for folk music.
Thanks for posting. One of the greatest songs ever. But the arrangement is even better than the song - the power just grows and grows. Phenomenal achievement for a collection of voices and acoustic instruments. Tommy and the Clancy Brothers tend to be massively under-rated in terms of their impact on bands like the Pogues and the whole 80s/90s Irish music cultural renaissance. And the song mentions my native Geordieland (Canny Shields is North Shields) so I couldnt be happier!

Liam was known for his beautifully lyrical ballads, but this song also shows the strength and power of his beautiful voice.

writer Ewan McColl (AKA Jimmy Porter); Clancys and Tommy Makem were big influences on the young Bob Dylan in New York folk days.

I bought this on vinyl in 1966 (I think) when I was 18.
All my hours fishing with my father, father in law (now both dead) I sang this to myself waiting for a bite.
I remember from the cover notes the song was written by a Scot, and won a songwriting competition.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever...
