Not to mention, as someone said below, if it were fast-forwarded the pitch would go up. Point is, this guy spends more time practicing than all you idiots spend with your heads in your asses... which is impressive.
Even more common sense: if it were fast forwarded, it wouldn't sound like a drum. This guy isn't even the "fastest" rudimental drummer out there. Go look up JJ Pipitone. Tell him he fast forwarded his videos and you'll get an even bigger laugh than you'll get here.
Hi everyone. If you're interested in fast and (more or less, I admit it) clean rudiments, please check my "me playing..." video. Its not really awesome but a nice effort (imo). All the best.
I can produce many short multiple stroke rolls but I could never play what Buddy plays. This is the classic case of people easily impressionable by visuals and sounds - they do NOT know the actual difficulty of what they are looking at. Buddy's playing was many times more difficult that Beckham's just because he had a once in a century control over everything single-strokes (the most difficult rudiment to FULLY master, in MY opinion - as I've just explained it better).
Copy and paste the tittle above in the "search" space on youtube and tell me someone that could reproduce such a genius single stroke control like that. And no, I'm NOT referring to multiple stroke/moeller rolls like these (from DCI/DCA snare players and pretty much all the kit ones). I'm talking about absolute control over volume, length, speed, power, SYNCOPATION, and dynamics in general using SINGLE STROKES.
Awesome technique and stick tricks, very impressive. I'm practising some of Rick's exercises and they have really helped in developing stick control, thanks heaps.
You wish you could do what Rick has done, don't hate. Rick you won that championship for a reason. Several people I know look up to you. By the way, how is the family?
Not to mention his ridiculous creativity, playing for several minutes non-stop combining everything imaginable and making his solos seem cohesive and well composed as a whole. These are things even Rick Beckham could never achieve (in MY sole opinion). All my admiration to him as a marching snare player though. He is still a TOTAL BEAST at what he does better.
I find BR a lot more interesting simply because Buddy had an immense MUSICAL background under his belt. IMMENSE. Played with the greatest musicians in the world since he was young and learned from a close friendship with the very best ones. His accents between rudiments alone are a beauty. Rick relies way too much on the rebounce of the sticks while Buddy could control every "kick" of the sticks. A single stroke p.h.d. mastering volume, accents, speed and cleaness of his every stroke.
It's a very simple rule: we always tend to do what we do best. With Rick there is no exception. He is definitely sick with his back sticking speed, but does it sound really good? I mean, everytime I watch Buddy Rich solo (and I've seen almost 1 hundred of different solos from him), I'm always under the impression that I'm watching not just a master technician but a master MUSICIAN as well. Immense musicality in his rudiments.
on the match vs. traditional sticking thing, it's normal to play traditional for marching snare, just how it's done. never hurts to learn both, though, i flip-flop a lot when i'm playing the drumset, can come in handy
Your all sad little boys who dont have your own videos up so resort to slagging off someone elses. Heres a tip practice more instead of bullshitting and maybe youll lose the bitter streak. twats
well, okay. let me ask the poster. I watched the solo. I liked the solo. But, it seems obvious to me that the film has either been sped up in places, or its distorting somehow. I wish it were just a nice simple live cut, without that annoying sprenson squeeze thing there. some good stuff, but also some sketchy camera stuff. both are true.
yeah. it takes travis barker all 4 limbs to play what virgil can do with only one. but then again virgil donati is one of the best in the world and travis barker isnt even close
From 1:28 to 1:48 is so fucking BORING, its not even funny - and Mr. Beckham insists on doing it again and again... great stick tricks and amazing speed but this solo lacks interesting rhythms (like in Casey Brohard's video and so on...).
It may appear boring, but what he's playing is actually quite difficult. If you'll watch closely you'll notice that he is playing sixteenth notes with one hand and triplets with the other, then he alternates. So, in reality, even the slow portion of his solo is difficult.
You can always tell who the 16-year-olds are, because they'll take something as sophisticated as this solo and compare it to Casey Brohard or Ivan Pacheco, or whoever the latest guy was to play the one-handed roll, elbow lick or any of those other gimmicks that require any actual chops to play.
Just look at It. How is it not fake! What other drummer do u know that can do that? The only person that I could see doing that is Tim Jackson. Why would I be jealous? Its fake
Just fyi, this isnt fake at all. This is DCA, not DCI. These guys have probably been marching for 10+ years, whereas the longest time most people have marched DCI for is 7 years. I wouldnt be surprised if this guy is 10x better than tim jackson.
Well, since Rick's won DCA indies 4 times, and is subsequently on a bazillion videos nation wide, and since I have been to his house and stood a few feet from him while he played, I can say with total confidence, as can the multitudes who've watched him play live, that YOU are the weakest link.
Using a floor tom head? That's a Premier Marathon. I know because I've been to his house and played on it! Are you thinking of my old video? (I had one with me playing on a floor tom head).

This is a kind of world rudimental champion. He can play everything, even 32nd notes at 144 bpm is not a big problem.

@Chuvachillo77
32nds at 144 with good quality is not a problem for most drummers who have honed their craft - rick beckham is the man

Notice the guy whose screen name is "MotleyCrue4LYFE" has no idea what's going on in the world of rudimental drumming.
I happen to know Rick personally, have been to his house and have watched him play this personally. The man's a monster.
But he's no Tommy Lee, right? Ahahahahaha!

Why do we have to use traditional grip?
Because if you give stick drum to a monkey, it will use match grip rather than traditional grip....
