Listen to John Legend and Pink cover this song. That's how you cover a song like this. Tasteful and true to the original idea of Peter Gabriel's version.
lol this version actually makes me not want to give up...the original makes me wanna curl up in a corner and sulk and cry :-P.....move with time people
@NikWongMusic I'm in full agreement with you. If your gonna do it exactly the way it was originally, why do it. I love the original but I also like this version as well.
@justmusicist If the song was written w/ a specific feel and message in mind, why would you want to change that feel and that message just to suit your own particular cause? How about using a different song or WRITING one...there's no excuse for completely changing a song that's already been associated w/ the specific meaning it was intended to convey.
Huh? Nobody is suggesting that they should do it exactly as it was done, only that it sounds shit this way... I gave the reasons that I thought it sounded shit.
'Classically trained' means absolutely nothing. I'm classically trained for god's sake, and I think this version is shit. I'm also a bit drunk, but whatever.
The feelings of the singing are incompatible with the sensitive meaning of the lyrics. Nothing compares to Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's version. This sounds like an enriched karaoke version.
this is the best version of this song i have ever heard. Bono and Alicia Keys voices go so great together. it is so beautiful and like i said before the best version i have heard
Oh gosh - what have they done?? This has not held my heart at all - the original holds your attention for the whole song - and makes you sing your soul out!!
this song has no emotion. How can you take such a purely emotional and healing song and make it so meaningless? Bono and Alicia Keyes, you suck at life
Wow, both of these artists are in way over their heads on this one. Gabriel and Bush's clean, clear, passionate vocals made this song resonate, busy vocal runs and Whitney Houston-esque affectations dilute the raw energy of the original material. Paula Cole hit this out of the park in her duet with PG, otherwise I've never heard it work as a remake. Certainly not here...
Why sing a song without any feeling ?? The original was sung with emotion and Peter and Kate could really feel the pain of the song and bring out the hope in which the song talked about. I do like hearing songs covered by other artists but really please leave songs like this alone if they can't sing from the heart.
Aside from whatever good things he's doing in the world, Bono sounds like he's walking casually through a mall window shopping for most of this song. Alicia brings a little more feeling to it--especially on the second half. The images are alright, but the song sounds like a stylized knockoff of the original. In general, they are both very good artists--just not on this song.
This was for a very good cause... I understand what they were trying to do. But this sounds like absolute garbage. Bono has a beautiful voice... It sounds like he doesn't have his full heart in this. Alicia Keys also has a lovely voice... But she's doing WAY too much with a simple song. Peter and Kate made this song to heart grabbing and intense because it was so simple, clean, quiet, and serene. Why didn't they write their own song for the cause? It would have meant a lot more
The original version asked those considering suicide to hang on. This version extols an entire continent to hold on, not because it is thinking about killing itself, but because it just needs more help, more attention...Musically I don't think this version is as powerful as the original, but it is trying to accomplish something very diferent.
Most of you are totally missing the point..it's not about who sang it better. Its about raising awareness for an issue affecting millions of lives. Where children are left to be the breadwinners in their families because their parents have died of HIV. If you watch this video and feel nothing...watch it again, and this time with an open mind. DONT GIVE UP!!
Wow, I never knew it could sound this bad. There is 0 emotion in both singers. Epic Fail, not to mention Bono totally kills with with terrible timing.
They totally got this song all wrong. Bono's vocals pale in comparison to Peter Gabriels.Alicia Keys has does a much better job ,but as previous reviewers have written, the timing is all wrong.
whatever the time signature.......this version lost all its sadness. Ironic since that is what these two artists are trying to invoke I would imagine.
I get what they were going for with this version, and the African drums, but the original is so full of emotion an feeling, that it's just missing here. Such a shame because both Bono and Alicia Keys are very talented musicians. Sometimes one just have to let good enough alone!
This is the most terrible cover version I have ever heard in my life. It's SO incredibly bad, it's beyond comprehension. It's the apocalypse in song form. They have massacred all respect for the original song and it's passion and beauty. Bono and Alicia are respectable artists in their own field, but this is just the most horrible thing I have ever heard. Peter and Kate singing this is as close to perfection as musically possible.
@librarianscales Oh come on, the arrangements may actually be exaggerated if confronted to the simplicity of the original (I think it was meant to be addressed to different issues) but you're being way too excessive in your judgements. Let alone the fact that - as much as Kate Bush may be a poliedric artist - her voice can't be even remotely compared to Alicia's.
@TheHunkIsSprunk - Spot On comment. Neither artist is committed or believeable. Almost like they are singing while reading the lyrics for the first time.
People who cover this song seem to have trouble with the timing. This version is in 6/8. The original is in 3/4, not 6/8, but it's certainly not a waltz, and the accents on the bass make it sound as though it's in a really odd time-signature. I think that's why people do bad covers of this song.
Or, maybe some listener's ears have trouble adjusting to the new time-signature... who knows... The bass is pretty dead in this version too :(
3/4 = 6/8... Odd-signature both. It depends on the arrangements concernig where you mark hard the times 1 and 3. It really sounds like a different song, but not due to the signature.
Not trying to start an argument here, but 3/4 and 6/8 are not the same thing, although I completely understand why people think that...
The original can be counted in either signature, but to me, the verse sounds like 3/4 while the chorus sounds more like 6/8... The _accents_ are what makes all the difference. In this version there is no ambiguity in the time signature; it's a very strong 6/8 and that makes a _huge_ difference to the way the song sounds.. to me anyway! :)
You are right, the difference is the accent. Musically it can be counted as well as a 6/8. I mean that I can play counting 3/4 or 6/8 equally. Odd signatures give a lot of chances on drums, specially funny 7/8, 11/8 and 13/8. I agree that such version enfasize the 6/8 too much due to the accents and sounds absolutely different. The original is much more soft and even is difficult to discover the signatures. That's the secret.
Also, your name says that you're a drummer, so I'd be really interested to know why you believe 3/4 and 6/8 are the same thing. (I'm not a drummer, and I always like to improve as a musician, so I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the matter!)
Well, you can count the bass in 6/8, but the accents on the other instruments and vox all indicate 3/4 to me. But really, the point is that this version makes it an obvious 6/8 compound feel, without the ambiguity of the original, and that has a huge impact on the feel... it kills it, in my opinion.
kate bush. u are a true legend. no one can touch your unique way. nothing wrong with this version, but Kate bush, keys will never be. I would put bono up there (in a male sense) for having that unique magical voice, one that makes you feel.
I don't care if you don't care for my comment. Actually, I'll tell you a secret: it's a free world and you have the right to have your say, to like or dislike something and say it out loud. You also don't have the duty to keep everyone happy.
As for me I very much dislike this piece of crap and I don't care if this hurts your feelings. It's just your taste.
Fuck off!!! I don't care for your comment... And if you don't like what I had to say then thats just too fucking bad!!! It's MY opinion and no matter what you or anyone else has to say is going to make me change my opinion!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ummmm. No. Not even close to getting the meaning of this song. Shame on Bono and Alicia for even trying to tackle this song. They need to stick to the "poppy" crud they are used to turning out.
o wow! i really cant believe the insult those 2 are getting from trying to help!!! interesting what are you doing? have you asked yourself that lately?
you didn't see the meanen of the song....yes peter gabriel version is unique, but come on...we are talking about the meaning of the song, of fight through life, don't give your dreams...and help who doesn't have nothing.....god bless who wrote this song.......XD guys don't fight for who is the best....its not the meaning or the goal of this song.....
I Don't care what anyone on here has to say but Alicia Keys part is SOOOOO much better than the original..... Yes, Bono is horrible... but isnt he always??!!! lol.... anyway Alicia Keys has way more soul in her voice than Kate Bush and on top of that she actually cares about what she is singing and the causes so you cant knock them for trying!!!!!
Wow. This... is just... terrible. Both artists should have shredded the tapes after they heard this. Two pretty talented people, but they're both in over their heads here. Don't try to improve on perfection.
Bono you brainless shite, get your greasy egomaniacal mitts off good music, it doesn't suit you. And Alicia, just fuck off. And who the fuck made the arrangement? they should be strung up by their intestines
Why am I not surprised at this? Of course, there is nothing wrong with bringing light to issues like these, but for some reason, this song doesn't fit and again it's his attempts to elevate himself to Super Hero status.
Stop it Bono, no matter how much you sing, you're not saving the world.
Before you jump on your soapbox, re-read my comment again. I said there is nothing wrong with the idea behind it, yes we need to be more aware, but the song does fit. Why not write an original? That and all Bono does is sing and rant, why not PHYISCALLY go and help them.
well to begin with it sounds like you have a personal problem with bono(which has nothing to do with me..)... secondly how do you know he does not physically help/ have people who do... i know for a fact that alicia keys does go out and help... i happen to enjoy this song.. just saying i dislike people who always hate on others specially when they are trying to do something positive. What have you done? have you physically helped? contradict yourself more plz!
Well, it's also more to do with the fact I think Bono has no talent.
I don't HATE Bono, I dislike him. I dislike him for his arrogance, his forcing of his views down peoples throats. I haven't seen him physically help. Have you? If he has, then I'll remove my foot from my mouth. But all I've seen him do is say to people "DO THIS, DO THAT!" while he jets around the world. I don't go out and physically help, I give through my own paycheck. Can I remind you there are worse comments. PLEASE.
@FelixChu, do a Google image search for "bono africa" and you'll see plenty of evidence of him PHYSICALLY helping. But come on, obviously he does more good leveraging his star power and raising many millions of dollars to fight poverty and AIDS not to mention all the political lobbying he does. I just came back from working with a local HIV/AIDS NGO in South Africa and the founder said that Bono is a hero to them and his efforts have made a big difference in raising visibility of African issues.
And I thought that no one could best Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's version. Not better, but just as good.
And the video fits perfectly, in the sense that these are people experiencing incredible suffering who need to hang on and receive a reason to keep hoping from someone, anyone.
BTW, this is Pete's song, not Bono's. He's just covering it, and if he wants to push peace, let him. We could use as many people aboard the Peace Train these days as possible.
Thank you for the message your intent reaches those with an open heart ...i do like Kate and Peters version too ...but i feel this version maybe cuz i LIVED the African pain and i do what i can when i can for the children of Africa .. Thank you much love
i appreciate the song but i like kate & peter's better, sorry....but u know, if u turn the volume down on this one and play kate and peters version it goes with the video better
Kate bush sang the song! and not just waled the words into the microphone like a female cat having sexual intercourse! All female pop 'singers' (I use the term loosely) tend to do this and it is very torturous I can't tolerate it anymore! Pay for this music? You'll have to pay me to hear it!
I know you dont understand yet but bobo is more than a mean spirit he is an evil one , Alicia is a mislead one and hopefully she will become conscious you to , love
I'm a great fan of Kate Bush and I think comparisons to the original is pointless. No one can emulate the Gabriel-Bush version. But I really appreciate what the selfless efforts of these two artists. Alicia Keys is simply one of the remaining true artists in this industry which has gone very downhill. I think this version is quite good. Just listen to it and don't compare it to the original. Peace.
Paul Newman set the standard for humanitarian aid with no ego attached. On a scale of 1-10 he was a 10. Bono....lacks the vocal range and also the moral range to encompass such a meaningful and beautiful song. Put your money where your mouth is Bone. Deeds not words. Words wisper--Actions scream.
What a self indulgent mess. Both Alicia & Bono should get their head out of their own arse. They have killed any feeling this song contains by being clever with their phrasing and timing. Nasty.
I would like to know all those criticizing this video who? i repeat WHO sent a penny to someone who is starving? and i meant a penny, not even a dollar?
if you have not done so then first do something for those human beings suffering for the lack of food and just then... maybe then I will let you rise a hand to throw a stone to the rest of sinners...
Another fucking celebrity ego trip. How predictable that Bono would take yet another opportunity to grab global attention by saving the world through Pop. The original was so powerful because it was raw and intimate, it was a man in pain being comforted by the one closet to him. It was the human spirit in it's darkest hour and at it's most vulnerable. Some might think this is well intentioned but I see it as a total vanity project.
I love it

They don't go to the relative major chord in the verses, not a good choice.
Plus the Tony Levin bass part is so transcendent and integral to the original, you're going to miss it no matter what arrangement they do.
But it's an ok version, and most importantly they did it for charity

eh - actually, i changed my mind. don't really like it. doesn't really capture the anguish of someone that really needs to hear this song.

it's an okay interpretation. kudos to Alicia Keyes for bringing this song to a new audience.

kate bush. u are a true legend. no one can touch your unique way. nothing wrong with this version, but Kate bush, keys will never be. I would put bono up there (in a male sense) for having that unique magical voice, one that makes you feel.

Dear Dionna5
I don't care if you don't care for my comment. Actually, I'll tell you a secret: it's a free world and you have the right to have your say, to like or dislike something and say it out loud. You also don't have the duty to keep everyone happy.
As for me I very much dislike this piece of crap and I don't care if this hurts your feelings. It's just your taste.
bebelonul 2 years ago
Fuck off!!! I don't care for your comment... And if you don't like what I had to say then thats just too fucking bad!!! It's MY opinion and no matter what you or anyone else has to say is going to make me change my opinion!!!
Dionna5 2 years ago
piece of crap. alicia's voice is just not made for this song. bono's too. and the approach is wrong.
what a great song and how easily forgettable would have been if this were the original version.
Lucky us, the real one is still there.
and what is that nah-nah-nah shit?

Ummmm. No. Not even close to getting the meaning of this song. Shame on Bono and Alicia for even trying to tackle this song. They need to stick to the "poppy" crud they are used to turning out.

my hatred of bono increases in ways i thought not possible. and, doesnt alicia realise her 'talent' in no way comes close to kates

you didn't see the meanen of the song....yes peter gabriel version is unique, but come on...we are talking about the meaning of the song, of fight through life, don't give your dreams...and help who doesn't have nothing.....god bless who wrote this song.......XD guys don't fight for who is the best....its not the meaning or the goal of this song.....

MariaTortilla18 2 years ago
Why am I not surprised at this? Of course, there is nothing wrong with bringing light to issues like these, but for some reason, this song doesn't fit and again it's his attempts to elevate himself to Super Hero status.
Stop it Bono, no matter how much you sing, you're not saving the world.
FelixChu 2 years ago
Its because of people like you.... ill refrain from voicing my opinions!
jpcenet 2 years ago
Is it because Bono is an egotistical moron?
Before you jump on your soapbox, re-read my comment again. I said there is nothing wrong with the idea behind it, yes we need to be more aware, but the song does fit. Why not write an original? That and all Bono does is sing and rant, why not PHYISCALLY go and help them.
FelixChu 2 years ago
well to begin with it sounds like you have a personal problem with bono(which has nothing to do with me..)... secondly how do you know he does not physically help/ have people who do... i know for a fact that alicia keys does go out and help... i happen to enjoy this song.. just saying i dislike people who always hate on others specially when they are trying to do something positive. What have you done? have you physically helped? contradict yourself more plz!
jpcenet 2 years ago
Well, it's also more to do with the fact I think Bono has no talent.
I don't HATE Bono, I dislike him. I dislike him for his arrogance, his forcing of his views down peoples throats. I haven't seen him physically help. Have you? If he has, then I'll remove my foot from my mouth. But all I've seen him do is say to people "DO THIS, DO THAT!" while he jets around the world. I don't go out and physically help, I give through my own paycheck. Can I remind you there are worse comments. PLEASE.
FelixChu 2 years ago
@FelixChu, do a Google image search for "bono africa" and you'll see plenty of evidence of him PHYSICALLY helping. But come on, obviously he does more good leveraging his star power and raising many millions of dollars to fight poverty and AIDS not to mention all the political lobbying he does. I just came back from working with a local HIV/AIDS NGO in South Africa and the founder said that Bono is a hero to them and his efforts have made a big difference in raising visibility of African issues.
jcheng5 2 years ago 2
I did look it up afterwards. So, I'm removing the foot from my mouth. But my argument still stands, that he has a massive ego from it all.

Duuhhh...I just realized that peace IS close to home for Bono. He's from Ireland!
mdyewheal 2 years ago
And I thought that no one could best Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's version. Not better, but just as good.
And the video fits perfectly, in the sense that these are people experiencing incredible suffering who need to hang on and receive a reason to keep hoping from someone, anyone.
BTW, this is Pete's song, not Bono's. He's just covering it, and if he wants to push peace, let him. We could use as many people aboard the Peace Train these days as possible.
Thank you!

Kate bush sang the song! and not just waled the words into the microphone like a female cat having sexual intercourse! All female pop 'singers' (I use the term loosely) tend to do this and it is very torturous I can't tolerate it anymore! Pay for this music? You'll have to pay me to hear it!

enlighten09 2 years ago
I'm a great fan of Kate Bush and I think comparisons to the original is pointless. No one can emulate the Gabriel-Bush version. But I really appreciate what the selfless efforts of these two artists. Alicia Keys is simply one of the remaining true artists in this industry which has gone very downhill. I think this version is quite good. Just listen to it and don't compare it to the original. Peace.
CaptiveTemptation 2 years ago
Paul Newman set the standard for humanitarian aid with no ego attached. On a scale of 1-10 he was a 10. Bono....lacks the vocal range and also the moral range to encompass such a meaningful and beautiful song. Put your money where your mouth is Bone. Deeds not words. Words wisper--Actions scream.

What a self indulgent mess. Both Alicia & Bono should get their head out of their own arse. They have killed any feeling this song contains by being clever with their phrasing and timing. Nasty.

if you have not done so then first do something for those human beings suffering for the lack of food and just then... maybe then I will let you rise a hand to throw a stone to the rest of sinners...
daniluchison 2 years ago
Another fucking celebrity ego trip. How predictable that Bono would take yet another opportunity to grab global attention by saving the world through Pop. The original was so powerful because it was raw and intimate, it was a man in pain being comforted by the one closet to him. It was the human spirit in it's darkest hour and at it's most vulnerable. Some might think this is well intentioned but I see it as a total vanity project.
