I found this interesting and informative. It gave some good tips that can allow me to develop other defensive responses, especially for children. At one stage we taught kids to the squeeze the testicles or hammer strike the groin and then hit the attacker with a sharp rear head butt and make a run for it. I think because they went home & practiced on their parents, it wasn't proving to be the ideal family activity. Fun for the kids though.
@BelloBudo007 Thank you for taking the time to respond and share. It is great that folks like you are out there helping kids learn some self-defense. Take very good care and thank you again. Fred
@hopufi Thank you for your response. This video was just on a couple points about leverage. We both know of course whoever can get and keep the other off-balance has an advantage. Certainly your point is significant; if I was behind someone the choke is a serious option. Here the coach would be helping me improve my getting him off-balance to take options away. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views. Take good care. Fred
They had us learn this escape maneuver for auxiliary police training, which I thought was absolutely ridiculous. Very few of the APOs or regular police I know have ever been in a chokehold; no one I'm aware of has ever tried to trap a law enforcement official in a bear hug. Who tries this on anyone with the intent of harming their target?
tasteegold777 - Thank you for taking time to post. You make good points. Yes the video was, as you know, just a couple points on leverage. If you get a chance look up my 2 videos named Jujutsu 101 A Little Philosophy. Take good care and train safe. Fred
only fools will get someone in the bear hug, thats a useless grip.
and when someone have yuo in that grip give him JUST A HARD HEADBUT with the back of your head and he will think about it to bear hug you ever again : -)
sdfasjf - Thank you for sharing your views. My video was just about a couple points on leverage. Someone powerful like Steve grabbing a person may immediately try to powerfully smash the person into the wall or ground. But yes, I agree with you that if someone just holds you and that's all they do, one could use stomping, butting, etc. to perhaps off-balance the attacker enough to then escape or achieve control. Again, thank you. Take good care. Fred
hey fred, pls dont get me wrong, i like your trickis, i was just seeing it with the eyes of someone never did jiu jitsu who never could react like you in the situation. maybe we would stay calm but not everyone. greets
@leveragepinning Well, if you get hit in the back of the head, (much like if you headbutt with the back of your head) you lose every sence of direction, so i wouldn`t do it..
@sdfasjf I dont think so; there are a lot of bully's who do that or bjjka also do that to lift someone up.
I also think that 'give him a hard headbut' is not a very good idea: the attacker will first of all lift you from the ground, so you have to stand very or you will be lifted before you know. And besides the attacker turns his head away so you can't 'give him a hard headbut'.
@sdfasjf Unless the person who is bear hugging you simply outweighs you by a lot, or is a log stronger, in which case a bear hug is a viable way to lift someone and smash them to the ground. As for a rear headbut... all they have to do is turn their head to the side. So while it may not be the most efficient way to attack someone, it is an attack worth learning to defend... and I dont think a headbut is the most efficient defense for it.
I deleted a few posts that were getting into other things. Jujutsu 101 A Little Philosophy #1 is a companion video to this post. This video shows an exercise, basic in a number of styles, about leveraging to off-balance the attacker. It is not a full technique. And like any exercise, it has to be practiced.
thank you for demoing with a large guy! alot of people still don't beilieve these techniques work against larger attackers, this should silence them for good!
try to step forward in a downward motion and then twist your torso thats another effective one because it removes his center mass. but i prefer pressure point in that situation
no offence but there actually is an escape here.and its a painfull one.either knock your knuckles of the attackers hands or grind them.works everytime
what i suggest u try (if you dont already know this technique)
is head but backwards into his face (disrupts balance backwardsand loosens his grip) step ur leg around the back of him and use the iru mi nage throw :)
Thanks for taking the time to post your comments. My comments and video references below pretty much covers my view. I think we all agree that the key to improving one's quality in jujutsu is how well one can steal the other's balance. Again your comments are noted and much appreciated. Take good care. Fred

Hi nisher15 - I was (in this video) showing (as I stated in the beginning of the video) a couple of things about leverage. See also my response below to leon3315; as well as my video Jujutsu 101 A Little Philosophy. I have changed the name of this video to reflect my intent clearer. Thank you nisher15 for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Take care. Fred
Yes, there is no 1 way that will always work. There are styles of jujutsu where you curve your back, like a "most muscular pose", which may make it a little harder to hold from behind. Leveraging into their knee helps too. This can help off-balance their posture and make the space needed. See Jujutsu 101 A LIttle Philosophy video; no matter what you try, it is your sensitivity to their balancing which is the key. Thank you leon3315 for your realistic concern. Take care. Fred
fdyjt - I mention in Jujutsu 101 - A Little Philosophy #1 about the vital importance of balance disruption. Yes, you are right. One cannot always simply throw a heavier (or lighter) opponent. The quality of your jujutsu is how well you can steal the other's balancing. Take good care. Fred
balancing is indeed import is ee in your most video's what you also can do that he will let you go is with the back of your head to his nose.or not? what do you think about that with the back of your head to his nose?
Thank you for your question. I will add it to my list of future videos. Thank you for watching, by the way. In the meantime, if you got the time, you may get some information you can use from some of my other Jujutsu 101 videos. Take care. Fred
U could always just shove your arms out (like your resting your hands on your hips with elbows pointing out to your side) before he gets a chance to grip round u preventing the bear hug and leaving them vulnerable for a variety of techniques.
Interesting point ScarecrowC. As we both know, it is important to practice various solutions, then try to boil down the few most useful (for student at his/her level) under higher intensity problems. This video was simply some points on leverage to disrupt. Again, thank you for sharing. Good stuff. Take care. Fred
I believe the videos purpose was to make people aware that just dropping into a horse stance, regardless of whether you can grab the hands or not, isn't always the best reaction. I believe Freds emphasis was to off balance the attacker, improve your own leverage or position and then apply the appropriate move of your choice.
Thank you for your input on wrist and arm control. Very good. I do believe clarity on my view is covered in my youtube video called Jujutsu 101 A Little Philosophy #1. Take care. Fred
We do the horse stance, only we're taught to immediately tighten our arms up when we feel the arms coming round us - like all styles, of course there are flaws and arguments against this method. We would use the horse stance you advised against, but curl our arms up so to create breathing space. Then it's more or less whatever technique you can apply given the situation you're in.
Still, that's just our way - I really like your method, I can see the practical value of it. ^_^
AncileOmega, I appreciate what you wrote. My point, which I know you understand, is that I was showing a drill to help improve leverage. Of course if you do your horse stance in a way that works well for you, then that's great. Leverage and balance disruption improvement in less time is what we both are working towards. Take good care. Fred
I'm from sweden and different styles and different countries have different techniques. Where i train we're stomping the opponents foot to stun him then we can pull his hand out, if still hard you should try to bend his finger. then you can easily pull him down.
When i still trained Ju-jutsu i found best way to escape that situation to crab the guy with your arms like backwards hugging him a little, jump backwards while you pull hes legs onto you. This will cause him losing hes balance and falling to hes back when you also fall on top of him. This fall causes confusion and impact on hes chest and back, wich is a good moment to get off. Hope you understood what i ment, and im sure you have tryed it yourself.
what about grabbing his balls and try to rip them off? he ll let go...i guess..kinda.Or heal stomp his foot or reverse headbutt his nose...you can feel where the other guy's head is..if the other guy is a 6.6 tall 250 pound monster and...a lune you need to get a little bit more practical..less is more .But hey...to each his own...right??..right
dpapaioannow, thanks for posting. Your attacking suggestions are well worth noting. The purpose of this particular drill I am sharing has been useful in helping students improve their leverage and stability when grabbed. Thank you for sharing your own practical points. Fred
The crotch can be difficult to get to from this position. But yeah, you're on to a winner if you can get to it. :-)
Personally I like to kick through one of the attacker's knees. They basically have to yield to you (or get a nasty broken knee joint), where *hopefully* you can get a *very dirty* Seoi Otoshi.
hmm i don't know, doesn't seem that difficult. I also like to kick the knees and, if possible, with the back of the head to his face. Btw, that seoi otoshi thing, is that judo? cuz it sounds like that
Seoi Otoshi is a Judo/Ju-Jutsu throw yeah. As for the groin I always seem to struggle to get at it when they hold me tight. It also depends on what sort of clothes they're wearing.
What if you are picked up in a big hug? What would you do then? (and I'm not scorning brazilian jiu jitsu, i love brazilian jiu jitsu, I just want to know)
I saw a street fight video. This big guy picked up the smaller guy from the front in a bear hug. The smaller guy's arms were free and he started slamming his elbows into the guys face. It was priceless.
If your picked up in a "big" hug then you can kick a knee or back words head but. Or grab his balls.Or put one of your legs behind one of his and push your wait back, will easy throw off his balance. And I don t think thats Brazilian Jiu Jitsui more like Small Circle Jiu Jitsiu.
Remember...While the bigger attacker is sitting, and moving for a better position, he is creating space (somewhere) and in addition the recipiant of the bear hug is able to adgust also. Clearly a diffinative answer to the puzzle can only be answered by the parties involved. But Fred's explaination is tested and retested. Thanks Fred
Dear TimA340 - Thank you for taking the time to call me long distance. I appreciate we had the time to share our views and concerns. Best to you Tim. Fred
I hate to disagree with your apparent figure of your admiration people and Fred does pose some good points, however as Jujutsuka of 36 yrs and a 7th dan I will have to say moving to that side position now allows the attacker to merely sit out on his butt extend his right leg behind Fred and achieve a full mounted position. 10X worse than this position.Addiionally completely traps his own mobility.
We're not quite sure how you achieve the full mount with that move, sensei. Listen closely to the key terms used - pressure, stability, balance, deeper, leverage, and real time (real fast). Things happen FAST in a real attach. Fred is pointing out that you move into the attacker, disrupting & off-balancing them, while executing your next move. Jujutsu is a SERIES of movements that improve your position and leverage while disrupting and weakening your opponent's position.
I'd have to agree with TimA340. The bigger guy would only have to sit out and roll to his left. In doing so he'll have enough time to throw his right leg over the instructor achieving either full mount or his back again.
Great video, great jujutsu. most instructors do not focus on the importance of using your core and lower body on this type of stuff even though the 'finish' appears to be with your arms. Fred shows how important this truly is. He's a great teacher.
I found this interesting and informative. It gave some good tips that can allow me to develop other defensive responses, especially for children.
