No the awl is not hot. They just make a certain knot at the end to finish it off. Later on before they take the shoe to final process the burn the ends of the thread so it won't unravel. I hope this helps..
Productivity is a result of Efficiency, and not energy efficiency like some are talking right now, but COMPLETE Efficiency...if you don't know the Baselines of your business how can you improve it?... if your Equipment isn't kept and operated properly how can you depend on it?...if your organization has no effective worker’s communication & training how can you get people to do the right things?...get it? Process, Equipment, Personnel, the core elements... get the Industrial Efficiency Triangle.
As a shoe lover, I have an appreciation for well made shoes and a deep respect for shoe makers that are responsible and love their art. Many people nowadays sacrifice quality for fashion, hence the rise of made in china cheap stiff shoes with glued on soles that fall apart in a few months. I have been thinking about this matter, i.e. saving this art that many are letting die. I would say follow your dream! Many people will appreciate it. Changes start with young people like you.
It is very hard on the hands and the arms. I must admit I do miss it now and then. The friends the fun we use to have there. I was there for 12 years . I had to learn a new trade and move on. Most of my siblings are still in shoe shops today. Ron the one sewing was the youngest I expected him to move on to better things but he never did. Oh well to each his own I guess. Thanks for the comments though...
when you close the two pieces together at the end, is that metal tool hot on the tip???

@uglyducklyugly I don't know where you could buy one? Maybe LL Bean or something like that. They might carry them.

The Bandages around the fingers are to protect the fingers when you pull in the stiches. The handsewn threads tend to cut into your fingers.

That's really impressive! Now I appreciate much more the hand-sewn shoes I own!

I'm fourteen, and I really want to be a cobbler when I grow up. My parents think I'm crazy...

@medievalbard
Well there are many better jobs out there. I don't think there will be much demand for cobblers in the future.

Yes once you have done it for a while it gets to be very easy. It all depends on the leather also. Some are easier to sew than others.
cbechard 3 years ago
it's inspiring! i love leather and sewing is my forever passion.
